UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JEROME KIDDER, OF NEWv YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELECTRODE-HANDLES'FOR MEDICAL USES.
Specification forming part olLetterst Patent No. 147,650, dated February 17, 1874; application tiled May 17, 1873. 4
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME KIDDER, of New York city, in the county and State of Sew York, have invented a new and Improved Double Electrode for application to various parts of the body, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to provide for electro-medical purposes an improved double electrode for facilitating the adjustment of the amount of surface required, and the convenience of manipulating the current. My invention consists of a double electrode so constructed that both poles ofthe electric current can be broughtto it, and still be insulated from each other, so that one pole of the eurrent will be received in the hand that holds the electrode, while the other pole may be applied to other parts of the body, thus using the same with one hand, lea-ving the other free for other purposes.
The acoompaiiying drawing represents a sideeleva-tion of my improved electrode, partly in section, in which- A represents the cylindrical core, ot' hard wood, rubber, or other insulating material, which is perforated centrally throughoi'it its whole length. The metallic wire rod B passes through core A, being threaded at one end, so that the socket c of set-screw b can bc screwed over it. The perforation of core A is suitably widened to allow socket a to turn therein; A shoulder, d, of core A, at its opposite end, is made concave, to tit over the convex circular plate O, placed loosely on -rod B. It is at the top of the hollow metallic plate or knob D, which is soldered, riveted, or otherwise connected tothe end of rod B, and serres to clasp between knob D and plat-e C the sponge or other material by which the electrical current is distributed over a larger surface. By tightening the socket a on the upper end of rod B, shoulder d' presses plate C on the rim of knobJ), holding the distributing material tightly between them. It may also be used without it, and be then applied to various parts of the body, concentrating the force of the current to those parts of the surface of' plate D which are brought in contact with the body. rlhe metallic tube Eis placed around the core A, resting on shoulder d, being entirely insulated from the inner rod B. rlhe set-screw bat the upper end of tube F connects with. the other pole of thc battery. Both the incoming and outgoing currents are conducted through the electrode, so that the same may be applied by the use of one hand to those parts of the body requiring electromedical treatment. Should the current be too strong for the hand, another electrode for the other hand maybe thrown into the circuit by connecting the same with setscrew I2', and by such distribution the effect of the current from that pole may be distributed to a 'greater degree, making it thus more bearable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, aiulrlesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The double 'electrode for applying electricity to various parts ot'. the body, consisting ot' in sulated core A, rod B, and outer metallic tube E, substantially as and for the purpose de scribed.
