PATENT OFFICE.
EMMA. F. CROSS, OF CORONADO, CALIFORNIA.
ENVELOPE.
Application and December 12, 1922. Serial No. 606,401.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA F. Chose, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coronado, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has for its object the provision of an envelope which may not be opened without making detection possible because of the peculiar formation and the number of joints, the envelope comprising a sectional front across which the name and address are required to be written, thereby increasing the difiiculty of tampering with the envelope to gain access to the contents. The space for receiving the postage stamp comprises portions of different parts of the envelope, the stamp'when properly affixed being attached to portions of different sections, thereby further adding to the difficulty of surreptitious opening of the envelope.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure 1 is a front view of an envelope embodying the invention, showing the same sealed, addressed and having the postage stamp afiixed thereto,
Figure 2 is a rear view of the envelope in the condition shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a view of the blank from which the envelope is formed, the various folds and creases being indicated by dotted lines Figure 4 is a view of the blank having the front folded and made secure by its fasten ing? strips,
igure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1- with the sealing flap and the long end flap folded, and
Figure 6 is a front View of the complete envelope as it appears when sealed and prior to receiving the "address and postage stamp.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The envelope is formed from a blank substantially as indicated in Figure 3 and comprises a back 1, a front 2, a sea-ling flap 3, end flaps 4; and 5, tabs 6 and 7 and fastening strips -8. The front 2 is disposed at the bottom of the back 1 and isnotched intermediate its free edge,as indicated at 9, to facilitate the placing of a letter in the envelope or the removal of the letter therefrom prior to sealing. The front 2 corresponds in length with the back 1 and is provided atopposite ends with strips 8 which are adapted to be attached to the end flaps 4: and 5. The front 2 is a trifle narrower than the back 1 to enable a letter being placed within the envelope or removed therefrom with ease. The sealing flap 3 is of tapering or triangular outline and is disposed at the top of the back 1. The tab 6 is cut from the end flap 5 and is disposed at the upper right hand corner of the back 1 and is adapted to fold over the upper right hand corner of the front 2, to the outer side of which it is attached by a suitable adhesive. It will thus be observed that the tab 6 is located at the conventional place designed to receive the postage stamp. The end flap 1 is the full width of the back 1 and nearly the length thereof, since it terminates a short distance only from the opposite end of the.
back which is provided with the end fiap 5. The end flaps t and 5 appear at opposite ends of theback 1 and constitute sections of the front of the envelope which is adapted to receive the name and address, as indicated'most clearly in Figure 1. The tabs 7 appear at the sides of the end flap 5 and are adapted to fold over the top and bot tom of the envelope and against the hack thereof to which they are attached by a suitable adhesive. When the envelope is closed, portions of different parts or sections, such as the tab 6, sealing flap 8 and end flaps 4 and 5, are exposed at the upper right hand corner corresponding with the space designated to receive the postage stamp so that when the latter is properly applied, these several parts are connected by the postage stamp, with the result that the difficulty of opening the envelope surreptitiously is majoint formed between the sections further adds to the difiiculty m an unauthorized attempt to open the envelope.
It will be understood from the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that the invention results in the provision of a safety envelope which may not be practically opened without rendering detection possible, hence interposes a hindrance to the surreptitious opening of the envelope and insures the contents reaching the addressee in safety.
What is claimed is:
1. An envelope comprising a back, a-seaL ing flap and front at opposite longitudinal edge portions of the back, flaps at opposite ends of the back, the one being long and the other short and constituting a sectional front, and tabs at opposite sides of the short end flap to fold over opposite edges of the envelope and against the back thereof to which they are attached.
2. An envelope of the character specified and sealing flaps and constituting a sectional front, and tabs at the sides of the short end,
flaps to fold over opposite edges of the back and against the outer side thereof, portions of the several parts or sections appearing opposite the postage stamp receiving space to be connected by the postage stamp when properly applied.
3. An envelope comprising a back, a front, a sealing flap, a tab carried by the back and folded over and secured to the 7 front, and an end flap to be folded over the sealing flap and front and cut away'to Vexpose said tab and a portion of said sealing flap to permit a postage stamp to be applied to the sealing and end flaps and tab.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
