Description

'two parts, as shown in the drawing, properly into the oil-cup, and its upper end is to be near UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOEa sOLOMoN ofEAMLIN, OE YPsILANTI, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVMENT N'LUBRICATRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,636, dated February 17', 1874 application filed January 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, S. C. HAMLIN, of Ypsilanti, in the county of fashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of -my invention `consists in the construction and arrangement of an attachment for oilcups for steaincylinder lubricators, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the. art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referrin to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of my in` vention, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same through the line .r x, Fig. 1.
A represents the base piece provided with a central passage, a, and attached in proper position for lubricating steam-cylinders. Around the upper end of the base-piece A are screwthreads b for attaching the same in the bottom of an oil-cup, which is screwed down upon the saine until it rests upon a circumferential flange, d. The base-piece A may be made in joined together, or of one piece only, if so desired. In the upper end of the base A is i11- serted and secured a tube, B, which runs up the top thereof. In the lower end of 'the tube B is a chamber or recess, e, in winch 1s placed a valve or pis ton, h, provided wlth a rod, t, run- .ning up through the tube B. Around the `rod t', between the piston h and the bottom of the recess e, is placed a spiral spring, f, which forces the valve or piston downward to close the upper Vend of the passage a. On the upper end of the rod@l is attached a cap, C, which iits over the upper end of the tube B. This cap is provided with holes m m in its sides at dii'- ferent heights.
The piston or valve h in the pipe B is worked entirely by the steam pressing the piston up at every revolution of the engine, to give a small portion of oil, and shutting off the oil on the reverse motion bythe sprin g j' closing the valve, thus admitting oil to the cylinder at' every revolution of the engine. The cap O on the upper end of the feeding-pipe regulates the low ot' oil, the holes in the cap being for different sizes oi' engines.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cap O attached to piston-rod z' and litting loosely around the end of feed-pipe B, all combined to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aiiix Iny signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
