fing chevrons), but it is standard crown wheel or equivalent thereot with which it would be adapted to gear.
The embodiment of the invention as above described is ot avsimple toi-m and can be constructed in asturdy manner adapted to reduce wear and to avoid slackness, and is suitable Jtor cutting single or double involute gears (i. e., those in which the teeth incline one Way only, or in two Ways tormto be understood that the manner of operating the slide and the arrangement of the mechanism therefor is not limited to the construction above described.
A Thus, for example, the cam may be constituted by an annular disc E coaxial with the point of oscillation of the arm A, and the acting part of its outer periphery may be shaped in the manner above described for the curved slot E2. Rollers ti, G2 upon the slide C would engage opposite sides of the cam F to cause the movement of the slide, and one of these rollers G2 would be pressed by the spring G3 against the cam to follow up the movements of 'the slide and prevent any shake in it.
Where double involute teeth are to be cut, tWo oscillating tool holders, as above described, are employed, one to effect the part of the tooth having the right-handed sweep, and the other tor the left-handed sweep, each holder being located about an appropriate axis of oscillation to eect this. The movement ot both tools would be timed so that they and their tool slidescleared one another throughout their 'respective travels.
Y What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a device for the generation of as shown in Figure 4, c
curved gear teeth, the combination ot amember adapted to oscillate about a relatively fixed axis, a tool holder slidable upon said Vmember toward and aWay Jfrom said fixed axis, a rack tool mounted in said holder, a stationary member and means on said toolholder adapted to cooperate with the said stationary member so as to reciprocate said tool holder upon said oscillating member' during its oscillatory movement, thereby to cause said tool to sweep out the desired curved path.
2. In a device for the generation of curved gear teeth, the combination of an arm adapted to oscillate about a relatively fixed point, a tool holder slidable along said arm, a rack tool mounted in said holder, a stationary cam having'an acting tace curved about said fixed point in accordance with the desired curved path of said tool, and a member upon said tool slide which engages the acting face of said cam during the Voperative movement ot' said tool, 'thereby to. cause said tool to move in the desired curvedpath.
3. vIn a device tor the generation of curved gear teeth, the combination With the Wheel blank, of a stationary member adjustable in relation thereto, an arm vpivotally mounted upon said stationarymember and adapted to oscillate about a fixed axis thereon, a tool holder slidable along said arm, guide-members for said tool-holder a raclr tool carried by said tool holder to act upon said Wheel blank, and an interchangeable cain carried by said stationary member and adapted to act upon said tool holder` during its oscillatory movement, thereby to cause said tool to sweep out a desiredcurved path.
In testimony vvhereot` I affix my signature.
HERBERT EDGAR TAYLOR.
