V UNITED STTES GEORGE HARLAND BOWDEN, OF WESTMINSTER, LONDON, ENGLAND.
SETTING OF STEAM BOILERS.
Application filed June 28, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen HARLAND BowonN, av British subject, residing at Westminster, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Setting of Steam Boilers, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to the setting of steam boilers of Lancashire or Cornish or other cylindrical type with internal flues within the shell of the boiler and side and bottom fines exterior to the shell of the boiler.
In this construction of boiler plates are affixed to project longitudinally from the rear of the boiler, and laterally or radially at each side near the front such plates fitting into grooves in the brick work or masonry to prevent the escape of the heated gases direct into the chimney flue at the back of the boiler and the inlet of cold air to the front and the sides of the boiler and also allow for any movement of the boiler shell due to expansion and contraction.
According to the invention I bond the brickwork both at the front and back of the boiler by a steel reinforcement with longitudinal and transverse members interlocked which is placed between the courses of bricks, the longitudinal members extending nearly the full length of the fender or partition walls and the transverse members extending across the walls from side to side and through holes or slots in the plates projecting from the boiler shell.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompi-inying drawings.
Fig. 1 is an elevation of front end of boiler partly in section through one side flue.
Fig. 2 is a plan. of front end of boiler with section through the side flues on line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of rear end of boiler partly broken away and transverse section through the back flues on line 3-3, Fig. 4.
Fig. 4- is a plan of rear end of boiler with section through the fender walls and fines on line 4%, Fig.
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation enlarged of the back plate and fender wall D on line 55-55, Fig. 6.
Fig. 6 is a. sectional plan enlarged of back plates and fender wall.
Serial No. 570,786.
The boiler A is of anyordinary cylindrical type with the plates B affixed at the back by the angle irons Z) and the plates C affixed at the front by the angle irons c, the plates being provided with slots 1) and the plates C with slots 0.
The fiues at the rear of the boiler are built with fender or partition walls D and at the front with the walls E, the walls D being formed with grooves d into which the back plates B are fitted and the walls E with grooves 6 into which the front plates 0 are fitted. F are dampers by which the side fiues Gr may be cut off from the chimney flue G to regulate the draught to the chimney (not shown).
Into the fender or partition walls D and E reinforcements H with longitudinal membersit and transverse members h are built in between the courses of the bricks to bond the bricks together and strengthen the walls. The longitudinal members 72, are disposed at the sides of and extend some dis tance behind the grooves (Z and e in the walls and the transverse members it are connected to and retain the longitudinal members It in position one of the transverse members it of each passing through the slots Z) and c in the plates B and C. At the back of the boiler above the projecting plates B a transverse channel iron K is affixedto the boiler and an angle iron M is carried by the brick work one flange of which depends into the interior of the channel leaving free play between them to permit of expansion and contraction of the boiler in any direction.
The grooves (Z and c and the channel It may be packed with asbestos in powder or other form.
What I clainras my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is In an expansion joint for a steam boiler the combination with a plate affixed to the boiler of supporting brickwork a groove formed therein, longitudinal reinforcing members disposed at either side of the groove, transverse reinforcing members disposed behind the groove and transverse re- .inforcing members passing through the groove and through apertures in the plate.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GEO. HARLAND BOTVDEN.
