- WASHING- MACHINE.
Application filed October 24, 1921. Serial 'n nsoa san' Be it known that I, LEONADUS O. Ponrnn FIELD, a C1t1Z6I1 f th'Ul11te(l States, and

A further objectis to construct Ya Washing machine having an adjustable oscillating rubbing head mounted in the lid of the tub andapowerfdriven wringer secured to the tub. The whole being so arranged that the scrubbing head'and wringer may be operated'independentlyof each other or simultaneously.
In the drawings, a a
Fig.1 is a side elevation of my machine, viewing the same from the power side.

Fig. 3 a rear elevation.
Fig. 4 a vertical section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 a fragmental view showing the manner of absorbing the shock when the crank arm is passing over center.
Fig. 6 a fragmental view of the rocking arm, showing the manner of securing it to the scrubber headishaft.
Fig. 7 an enlarged fragmental view of one side of the top, showing the manner in which the scrubber head shaft bearings are mounted.
In the construction of myv device, I employ a tub 8-which is substantially semicylindrical, and has formed integral therewith a projection f). To the tub 8 is hingedly secured a lid 10 having sides 11. These sides are provided with downwardly extending portions 12 which lit in the recesses 13 formed in the sides 14 of the tub. The downwardly extendingportions'12 are provided with a slot 15 in which journal boxes '16 are slidabl mounted. The journal boxes are held within the slots by means of a strip in Washing Machines,
Marni; em -E;
17 which is di rthe sides and which prevent the" boxes 16 from coming out of the slot. shaft 18 to whicha scrubber head 19 is sedrical in form andhas sides 20 which are secured together by, means of triangular strips 21. The bottom 22'of the tub 8 is provided with similar strips 23. The strips Journaled in theboxes 16 is a cured. Thisscrubber head is semi-cylim;
21 and 23 performing the rubbing of they clothes when the head 19 isoscillated. Se-
cured to both sides of the tub are legs24 between which a shelf25 is secured and-on this shelf is mounted a driving, device 26 which is preferably an electric motor, al-
though various other devices-may be usedL Secured to the back of the tubare bearings 21 in which a splitshaft 28 is'mounted. The shaft 28 being provided with a dental clutch 29 which is operated by a'lever 30 sothat although the power device is. operatthe operation of the scrubber head can Y be discontinued. On one end of theshaft" 28 is mounted a spur gear 31 which meshes v with a spur gear 32, secured. on a shaft On the shaft 33 is mounted a pulley 34 over' which a belt;3 5 passes for communicating the power from the power device. On the shaft 33 is also mounted abevel gear 36 which meshes with the bevel gear 37 mounted on one end of a shaft 38. This shaft is supported by bearings 39 secured to the side of the tub. Slidably mounted on the opposite end of the shaft 38 and rotatable therewith is a double bevel gear 40 which is operated by a lever 41 and which is so arranged as to mesh with the bevel gear 42 for placing the wringer 43 in operation. .By meansof this bevel gear it is possible to run the wringer in either direction, that is, to wring the clothes either from the machine or into'it. Secured to the end of the shaft 28 opposite the gear 31 is a crank arm 44.
Its free end being pivotally attached to one" endof a connecting rod 45. The other end of this connecting rod being attachedto the rocking arm 46. This rocking arm is provided on its upper end with a recess 47 which is preferably rectangular so as to receive the-end of the shaft 18. After the recess of the rocking arm46 has been placed overthe shaft 18 a pivoted plate 48 is see cured in place by means of a thumb screw and nut-49, as illustrated'in Fig. 5. Secured to the shaft 28 is a double arm casting 50.- This casting is adapted to revolve with means of a socket52.
the shaft 28 and during its revolution, its
ends oomein contact with a coil spring 51 which is secured to the side or" the tubby These arms extend in the same direction as thefcrank arm, (see Figs. 2 and 5,) and are for the purpose of absorbing or reducing the shock asthe crank and connecting rod; pass over center, and
7 thereby reduce the sudden jerk on the clothesbeing'washed to the reversing of the oscillation on the scrubber head. V
Adjacentthe free'end' of the lid 10 and 7 extending entirely across the tub is a board 53. Its lower edge being raised some dis- 15 sired amount of water placed in the tub, the
wash then placed in, and the lid lowered, and due to the presence of the slots 15 in the sides of the lid, the head will automatically adjust itseli tothe amount of clothes contained inthe tub. The rocking arm is then aga1n connected to the shaft 18 andf the power device 26 started. This starting of thepower device will only rotate aportion V of the shaft 28 until the lever 30: is moved so as to bring the dental clutch into engagement. The rotary'inovement of the shaft '28 is then communicated to the scrubber head 19 by means of the crank arm and rocking arm where it is reduced to an oscillating rocking movement; F
' ,Vilhenit is desired to remove the'clothes from the'tub, the dental clutch 2 9 is first disconnected, stopping the movement of the rubbing head. The rocking arm is then,
disengaged from theshaft 18 and the'lid raised, carrying with it the rubbing head. Thelever 41 is then operated so that one side of the doublebevel gear '40 engageswith the bevel gear 42, thus placing thelwringer in operation and the clothesthen passed through the wringer. The water which issqueezed out of theclothes by the wringer returns to possible by :reversing the direction ofthe wringer to takethe clothes out of thesoaking water and swing thernfso that they will pass directly into the tub 8, where they are washed.- v v 'Having fully described filly-invention, what: I claim is: J a
