Description

Mortise Door-Latches. I
N0,147,560, Patented Feb.17.1874" III/III/IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII? '1' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT l). JUDD, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN MORTISE DOOR-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,560, dated Fel rualy 17, 11574; application filed January 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, ALBERT l). J UDl), of
New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Mortise-Latches for Store-Doors, &e., of wh ch the following is a specification:
Latches have been made with a sliding block operating upon a lever within the ease, as seen in Letters Patent No. 138,680.
My invention is made for lessening the frietion of the parts and preventing the sliding block becoming wedged in the ease. I make use of a link-bar extending upwardly from the sliding block to a bellerank lever located above the stem of the sliding latch, and acting upon the same by means of a fork and a notch in the stem..
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of i the latch with the ease in section, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan at theline w .r.
The case is made of the front plate a, box I), and cap-plate c, and within the said case is the latch d, that passes through the front plate a, and is provided with the stein c and spring J", said stein sliding throughthe guide-lugs It, and being notched for the forked end t of the bellcrank lever I, that swings upon the fulcrumstud r. The link-barn extends upwardly from the latch-block 1', and is vjointed, at s, to one end of the lever l. The block 1- is guided at its edges in the notch or opening made atu in thee-use b c, and upon theinner surfaces of the case the ribs 2 3 are provided, so that the parts can be finished ofi' true and parallel to allow the block to slide freely, the stud 0 serving to hold the linkbar nin position on one side, and the projection 4, extending toward the edge of the ease in the other direction, to steady the block 7*. t
It is to be understood that the thumb-lever of the latch, on one or both sides of the door, extends across below the block 1', so as to press the same upwardly when the thumb-lever is acted upon.
By this construction the link-bar, extending upwardly to the joint 8, serves to guide the block 4' and hold it inposition by the aid of the stud e and projection 41. t
I claim as my invention-- 'lhe link-bar at, extending upwardly from the block it, and hinged to the bell-crank lever Z at a point above the stem of the latch, in combination with the latch d, stem 0, spring f, stud v, and projection 4 bearing against the box (if-the ease, as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 23d day of December, A.
A. D. JUDD.
