IMPROVEMENT IN CARCOUPLiNGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent To all whom fit muy concern Y .Be it known that I, 0.1mm' W. (JLAun, of Neu bliryport, in the eounty ot' Essex and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Uar-(Jouplings, ot' which the ibllowing is a speeilication My invention relates to a self-acting eareoupling, the object ot' my invention being to provide a ear-coupling that will look automatically, and one that can be easily applied, it' desired, to the shaekling appara-tus now in common use.
Figure l is an elevation of the sluiek'ling arrangemelit, with butter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 a vertical horizontal seetion ot' the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are pla-n views. Fig. 5 is a planet' the ear-coupling arrangeinent detached from the butter.
A A are the buffers, similar to those now in common use. l B are hangers attached to the buffers, to hold the shaekling-links. (l U are the shaekling-links. D D are the shack ling-pins. E E are slides, which hold up the shaekling-pins previous to coupling. F F are pivots for the links so that the latter may rise and fall. The links C C are prevented from falling too far by the stops shown. Previous to Coupling the ears, the pins I) D are raised, and the slides move down, so that the pins may rest upon them. The slides E E are free to move along the links, being` regulated by the guides G G and the pins I I', these latter pins moving in the slots shown. The
cars then coming together, thelinks C C pass the one over the other, according as one may be slightly higher than the other, said link pushing up the opposite Slide, so that the No. 147,553, dated February 17,1874; application led July 2i, 187:1.
shackling-pin which rested upon said slide drops down, passing through the opposite link, and also through one of the holes J J ot its own link. The manner ot' this operation is indicated in the drawing by the dotted lines between Figs. l and 2; where the coupling arrangement and buffer of Fig. 2 :re represented as having passed to those of Fig.
By this operation, the ears are secure] y coupled, `and may freely change relative position to each other, as may be the result ofthe unequal movement -ot' the ears, without any injurious strain to the coupling parts.
The advantages of my invention are: The eiteotuall y avoiding personal exposure in coupling ears 5 the simplicity of the device, being ot' few 'parts and of light weight; and it being an arrangement that is easily applied to ears as now built and in common use.
It is only necessary to attach the hangers I- IB to the present forni ot' buffers, which, with the few parts described, make the self eoupling arrangement complete. By using the buffers of the present forni, the cars may be coupled as is done now, it' occasion requires.
l claim as my inventionl. The links C C', in combination with th hangers B B and buffers A A', substantially als and for the purpose hereinbei'ore set forth.
2. The slides E E', in combination with the i links U U and pins l) D', substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
