COMBINED mourns-Bonn]; STAND AND wrnnow JACK on SEAT.
Application filed February 24,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HAAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ironing-Board Stand and Window Jack or Seat; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this, invention is the provision of an article which may be used as a stand or support and as a window jack or seat, the device being of such construction as to be readily convertible from one form to the other as occasion may require and which, when not required for service, may be reduced to compact form for convenience of handling and storage so as to be out of the way and not occupy valuable space.
A further purpose of the invention is the provision of a device of the nature afore said which is light, durable and strong and which comprises a few number of parts and is simple and economical in structure and capable of being easily and quickly 3O converted from one form to the other or reduced to a compact form for storage.
Otherobjects and advantages will be ap parent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, var1- ous changes in the form, proportion and sorted to without departing from the nature of the invention. 7 1

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the draw ings by like reference characters.
The device comprises a base and a sec tional support, the latter being shiftable and adapted to be securedto the base in either one of its adjusted positions. The base comprises a platform 1, side elements 2 and legs 3and 4. In the preferable construction, the platform 1 consists of sheet metal of suitable gage having opposite longitudinal edge portions bent'in the same direction substantially at a right angle to provide the side elements 2 which serve to stiffen and reinforce the platform. The legs 3 preferably form a partof the plat form and their upper portions are deflected outwardly or crimped, as indicated at 5, to fit about the nosing 6 of a window sill. "The legs 4- may be provided in any manner and attached to the base in any preferred way. The side elements 2 are notched in their lower edges, as indicated at '7, and are provided with openings 8 and 9, the openings 8 being in line with the notches 7 and the openings 9 adjacent the legs 4. The legs 3' and 4 are substantially of uniform length to support the platform A transverse strip 10, preferably of wood, is secured tothe under side of the platform 1 and constitutes.
a rest to support the same upon the sill of a wooden structure, as indicated most clearly in Figure 2. When the deviceis in use as a window jack or seat and is applied to the sill ofa brick structure, as indicated most clearly in Figure 3, the legs 4: rest upon the sill and support the outer end of the platform.
The support comprises adjustable sections designated by the numerals 10 and 11, respectively, the lower section 10 beingsesill and prevent cured to the base a dthe upper section 11 being adjustable on the section 10". As shown most clearly in Figure 5, the lower section 10 consists of a rectangular frame of channel iron, the vertical members having openings 12 adjacent their lower ends,
stops 13 intermediate their ends and keepers 1 1 at their upper ends. The lower member of the section 10 is adapted to be disposed beneath the platform 1 and enter the notches 7 or engage the lower edges of the elements 2 adjacent the legs 1, according to the position of the support and the adaptation of the device for use either as a jack or stand. The upper section 11 is slidable vertically in the upright side members of the section 10 and when elevated is sup ported by means of stops 13, entering notches 15 in the ends of the side members of the section 11, as indicated most clearly in Figure 1, and when lowered is prevented from displacement by the steps 13 engaging openings 15 formed in the side members thereof. A bolt 16 secures the part 10 to the base in either position. When the part 10 is in the position indicated in Figure 1, the bolt 16 passes through the registering openings 8 and 12. When the part 10 is in the position indicated in Figure 2, it is retained in place by means of the bolt 16 passing through the registering openings 12 and 9. The cross member of the section 11 is depressed to form a rest for an end of an ironing board and preventlateral displacement thereof, the opposite end of the ironing board being supported in an usual or preferred way.
When the device is adapted for use as a stand or support for an ironing board or the like, the frame 10 is attached to the base approximately at a central point and occupies a vertical position, as indicated most clearly in Figure 1. This provides a substantial support which is not liable to tilt because of the central position of the parts 10 and 11. When the device is adapted for use as a window jack or seat, the frame 11 is telescoped in the frame 10 and the latter occupies a position at one end of the base, as indicated most clearly in Figures 2 and 3. In this position of the frame 10, it inclines to form a convenient rest for the back and the platform 1 constitutes a seat. The crimped portions 5 of the legs 3 engage the nosing 6 of the window outward displacement of the device. When the jack is applied to the sill of a wooden structure, the transverse strip 10 rests upon the sill as indicated most clearly in Figure 2. However, when the jack is applied to the sill of abrick or other structure of masonry, the'legs 1' rest upon the sill, as indicated most clearly in Figure 3. When the device is not required for immediate use, the frame 10 may be detached from the base and placed thereon, thereby reducing the article to compact form So as to occupy a minimum amount of space.
i The normal tendency of frame 11 is 'to move toward each other, the frame being constructed of resilient metal the arms may be spread in order that the openings 15 will receive the lugs 13. When it is desired to disengage the arms of the frame from the lugs 13, it is but necessary to insert a sharpened instrument'or an instrument having a relatively sharp edge, under the lower ends of the side arms of the frame 11, and the side arms may be pried outward from the side arms of the frame 10 and the lugs 13 released from the notches 15. A slight upward movement of the arms 11 will then. permit the frame to be drawn upward to bring the notches at its lower end into en gagement with the lugs 13 and the frame will be supported in elevated position.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the character specified, telescoping sections, one of the sections having its side members channeled and provided at one end with keepers and having intermediate sto as andthe telescoping section being slidab le in the channels and retained in place by means of the keepers and held in extended or closed position by means of the said stops.
2. A device of the character specified comprising a base including depending reinforcing elements at opposite longitudinal edges, said reinforcing elements having notches in their lower edges and provided with intermediate and terminal openings,
the intermediate openings being in line with the notches transversely of the base, a support comprising a transverse member and side members, the transverse member adapted to extend beneath the base and enter the notches of the reinforcing elements or engage the lower edges thereof, the lower ends of the side members having openings to. register with the openings of said reinforcing elements in either position of the support, and a bolt adapted to pass through the registering openings and secure the support in either adjusted posit-ion.
3. A combined stand and windowjack comprising a base, supporting means for said base, said means being adapted to se cure the base to a wmdow sill when the device is to be used as a window jack and adapted to support the base on the floor when used as a stand, and a support extending vertically above the base and shiftable thereon from an intermediate to a terminal position.
l. A comb'ned stand and window jack comprising a base, supporting means for said base, said means being adapted to se cure the base to a window sill when the the arm of the device is to be used as a Window jack and Intestimon adapted to support the base on the floor when 1n presence 0 used as a stand, and a. support extending y whereof I affix my signature f two Witnesses.
