WATCHCASE.
' Application filed January 29, 1928. Serial No. 815,478.
To all whom itma/yconcern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. HOWARD, a
' citizen of the United States, residin at Chiof the stem.
cago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watchcases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in watch cases, and more particularly to cases of the two-piece type wherein. provisionis made for-the mountin of the windin and setting stem through t e joint at whic the two pieces ofthe case come together when closed. I
"One object of the invention is to provide in a case of this character, ineans for rendering the same dust roof at the point of entrance ther objects will also appear from the following specification taken in contherein;
nection with the accompanying drawings wherein one form of the invention 'is illus trated. v
' In the drawings- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a watch c ase, showing the present improvements embodied Fi 2 is a top plan view of the case showingf e same open; and
ig. 3 is a sectional view taken onthe line 3, 3 0f 2. I Referring more in detail to the drawings the watch case in its entirety is designated by reference character 10, said case being shown as of the elongated rectangular type such as now commonly used for the so-cal ed wrist watches. The body portion of the case cover portion thereof is. shown at 12, the
, latter being hinged as at 13 to the body por-.
tion so that the same may be readily removed or swung back, as shown in Fig. 2, to permit of access to the watch movement, designated generally by reference character 14:. The
winding and setting stem of the movement is shown at 15 andextends throu h an opening 16 in the case formed by t e-comple-. mental grooves 16 and 16" formed in the portion and the cap thereof respectively. I
Mounted roundin the opening 16 is a housing 17, said housing eing of twopart construction, one part being carried by the body. portion of the case and the other part by the cap or cover thereof. These housing parts may be formed integrally with the parts of the on the edge of the case and mm,
case carrying the same, or, if desired, may be formed so aratel and suitably attached thereto. ounte within housing. 17 is a collar 18 of packing material, the stem 15 slidably enga in throu h said collar as shown more c ear y in F1 2 and 3. The head 19 of the stem is slig tly greater in diameter than the diameter of the housing or packin box 17 and is provided with an annular epression 20 in its under face, said depression being of a size to receive the outer en of thepacking box-17 when the stem is in. its normal posltion, as shown in Figs. 1i. and 3. The stem illustrated is of the type" which is employed both for winding and "setting, the stem being pulled out, as shown in Fig. 2 for setting. After-a set ting operation, the stem is pushed inwardly tov its. normal position. in which 0- sition it may be used for winding. he packing collar' 18 very snugly fits thestem 15 but at the same time permits of the sliding in and out of the same. As will be observed, the construction of thehousing 17 in two parts which come together when the case is closed enables the packing ring or collar 18 being very easily positioned or replaced Sl'lOllldOOOflSiOIl require. -The pack-, in ring may be made of an one of a number of different materials, suc as hard rubber, gutta-percha, fiber, lead, etc'., and in practice has been found to very effectively revent the entrance of dust, grit and the ike into the caes.
A suitable catch (not shown) is provided for removably securing or holding the two parts of the case" together when in closed relation, as-will be readily appreciated.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the presentimprovements are susceptible to change and modification without departing from the spirit .of the'invention,
and accordingly it is not desired to limit or inillustrated and described, except where restrict the same to the particular form herewatch case provided with'a stem opening at I the joint between the cap and bod thereof, of a acking box surrounding sai openin 2.' he combination with a two-piece watc case rovided with a stem opening at the joint tween the cap and body thereof, of a I acking box surrounding said'opening, said 0: comprising complemental sections, one
case rovided with a stem opening at the jolnt tween the cap and body thereof, of a packing box surrounding said opening, said box comprising complemental sections, one
carried by the body portion of the case and the other bythe cap thereof, and packing material housed within said box.
4. The combination with a two-piece watch case provided with a stem opening at the joint between the cap and body thereof, of a packing box surrounding said opening, and a collar of packing material housed within said box and adapted to slidably receive the I watch stem.
v 5. In combination, a watch movement, a two-piece case therefor, a windin and setting stem extending through sald case, a head for said stem having an annular depression therein, packing material surrounding said stem, and a box for housin said material, said box being received within the deprcssion'in said head when said stem is in its normal position.
6. In a two-piece watch case, a packing box surrounding the stem opening therein, the body and cap of said case each carrying a part of said'b'ox.
In testimony whereof, I have subscribed my name,
JOSEPH o. HOWARD.
