To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. MARBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Clamp, of which the follow ing is a specification.

This. invention has reference to clamps, and more particularly to a clamp especially designed for use in the manufacture of boots, shoes or the like.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a clamp having novel means to cause the same to automatically adjust itself to the article under operation.

A further object of the invention is to provide a clamp which may be used with efficiency in connection with securing the usual wooden heels to boots, shoes or the like, and eliminating all danger of splitting the heel durin the securing operation.

A still furt or object of the invention is to provide a support for the clamp, whereby the clamp may be held against movement to insure against the article supported by the clamp becoming displaced therefrom.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of a clamp constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the same as supporting a shoe.

Figure 2 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 illustrates a plan view of the base or support of the clamp.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the base or support of the clamp and as shown this base is provided with opposed ribs 6 which have their adjacent faces inclined as indicated at 7 to accommodate the inclined surfaces of the lower jaw 8 of the clamp.

as by means of the screws 9 which pass through the base .3 and embed themselves in the surface of the bench on which the device is positioned.

The clamp proper comprises an upgei. arm 10 and a lower arm 8, which arms are formed integral with the arm 11, there being provided a hoo r member 12 adjacent to the rear of the lower jaw 8, by means of which the clamp may be hung from a suitable support, which is in the form of a relatively flat bar. This hook member is shown as lying in proximity with the rear surface of the arm 1]. so that the hook may cooperate with the rear surface to grip the supporting bar and prevent lateral movement thereof.

The arm 10 is provided with an enlargement 1?) at one end thereof, which is formed with a threaded opening to accommodate the screw 14: having a ball 15 formed on one end thereof, which ball is seated in a suitable socket formed is the head 16 and by means of which the head may pivot with respect to the screw 14.

Extending upwardly from the lower arm 8, is a finger 1? formed with a rounded end 1? which rounded end is of a diameter greater than the diameter of the usual last thimble, the last, positioned in a shoe, and which in the present drawing is indicated at 18.

Thus it will be seen that due to this construction the last will rock on the finger, when pressure is brought to bear on the screw 14, to the end that the shoe and its last will automaticaily align itself between the arms 10 and 8 to insure an even pressure being directed to the heel under operation.

In the use of the clamp, it might be stated that the same is employed for secur ing the usual wooden heels to the shoe proper, there being applied a coating of cement to the shoe engaging portion of the heel prior to the positioning of the same.

After the coating of cement has been ap plied, the shoe is positioned in a clamp in a manner as illustrated by Figure l of the drawing, the screw 14 being operated to cause the same to force the heel to the shoe.

When the shoe has been positioned, the clamp is removed from its base and hung on agsuitable supporting bar not shown, whereupon the base may be again used for llflh supporting a clamp While a heel is being applied to a shoe, supported thereby.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is 1. A shoe clamp including a curved body portionhaving parallel arms, one of said 7 arms having an enlargement formed with a threaded opening, a finger extending upwardly from the opposite arm, said finger having a rounded outer end and being of a diameter greater than the diameter of a last thimble to cause a last supported by the clamp to automatically adjust itself, and means cooperating with the'finger for clamping a heel. I

In a shoe clamp, a body portion, a pair of parallel arms, an adjustable screw operating through one of the arms and having a movable head on one end thereof, a finger extending upwardly fromthe opposite arm having a rounded end, the finger being of a diameter greater than the diann eter of a last thimble, the rounded head of the finger adapted to engage a last thimble adjacent to the open end thereof, to permit the last to rock on the finger, and said screw adapted to engage "the heel of a shoe positioned on the lastto force the heel into close engagement With'the shoe, and a base to removably receive the body portion.

3. In a shoe clamp, a body portion, a base to removably receive the body portion, said body portion including opposed arms, means carried by the arms for gripping a shoe positioned betWeen'the arms, iand a hook member :lormed integral With the body portion and disposed in spaced relation Withthe rear edgeofithe' body portion, said hook member-being adapted to be positioned over a supporting bar.
