rl'his invention relates to .improvements in iachines lor making or operating upon elliptical former-one object of my present invention being to provide simple and etlicient means which may be operated to mark or out objects of elliptical shape or togrind or polish objects of such shape, and to so construct the machine that it may be adjusted to make or operate upon elliptical objects of ditlierent relative dimensions or of different sizes, and which may also be adapted to make or operate upon objects from a true circular shape to circles or eliipses ot' any desired size within the capacity el? The head 6 of the sleeve enters a suitable recess 6 in the center of the driving plate and the latter is secured by screws 12 to the sprocket wheel. The driving plate 11 may be made elongated in form and is provided with a dovetailed guide 13 to enter a similarly shaped elongated guideway lll in the under side or' a circular guide plate 15. The guide plate 15 constitutes the lower member of a turning head 16, and is provided with an elongated opening 1l' tor the accommodation of the portion ot the lined shaft 3. The upper member of the turning head is formed by a circular plate 18 disposed above the plate 15 and held separated therefrom by posts 19 which may be secured in place by screws 20.
An elongated head 21 made rigid with the upper end of the fixed shaft 3, is disposed between the plates 15 and 18 of the turning head 16. rlhis head is provided with an elongated dovetail guideway Yfor the reception of a similarly shaped adjustable block 28 provided with an upwardly projecting pivot pin or post 28, on which a fulcruni plate 24 is pivotally mounted and enters an elongated guideway 25 on the under side Vof the top plate 18 of the turning head.
A wooden member 26 is located upon the top plate 18 and lis held in place by means oic dowel pins a, b, l), projecting upwardly from said top plate and enteringl sockets in the member 26, said sockets being preierably reinforced by inea-ns of metal plates 2l' secured to said wooden member. The dowel pins are arranged on a center line parallel with the center line or the drive plate 11 and at right angles to the guideway 25 in the top plate 18.

The work may be placed upon the table 28, or the latter may be provided with an opening 28a', so that a work holder of any desired construction may be mounted upon the Wooden member 26. rIhe top plate 18 of the turning head may be connected with the member 26 and Work table 28, by means of arms 29 secured to the plate 18 by means of screws 30 and to the member 26 by means of thumb screws 31.
With the construction and arrangement of parts above described, it will be observed that when the ulcrum plate 24 is adjusted so as to be at one side of a line passing axially through the sha-ft 3 and through the center of the driving pla-te 11, and the sprocket wheel is turned, the turning head Will rotate with it and by reason of the lact that the guide in the top plate 18 in which the ulcrum plate 24 is located, is disposed at right angles to the sliding connection ot' the lower plate 15 with the driving plate, the turning head and the work table carried thereby will be `caused to turn in. an elliptical path so that a tool or marker engaging the work will cut or mark an ellipse,-viz, i'iorm an, elliptical ligure.
By adjusting the fulcruin plate 24 relatively to the head 21, the relative dimensions of the elliptical path ot the turning head may be varied, and by so locating said rulcrum plate that its center shall be in axial alignment with the fixed shat't 3, the path of the Aturning head and the work will be circular.
In the drawing, I have shown manually opera-ble means for driving the sprocket wheel 9, but it desired, power means may be employed. In constructing the n'ianually 4operable means, I provide on the base 1, a post 82 adjustably connected with said base by means of an adjusting` screw and on this post, a. sprocket wheel 34 is mounted and provided with a crank or handle 35 for turning it,-motion being imparted from said sprocket wheel 34 to the sprocket wheel 9 by means of a drive chain 36.
lThe sizes of the figures to be made on or with the work supportedv on and moved by the turning head may be varied and the tool or marker controlled by means ot the mechanism now to be described.
Mounted upon the base 1 at a suitable distance Jfrom the turning head and its operating mechanism, is a support 37, upon which a block 38 is hinged as at 39. A Slotted arm 40 is disposed over `the hinged block 38 and adapted to rest and to be moved over a guide plate 41 secured upon said block, said plate being provided with a flanged guide-rail 42 Vto enter a similarly shaped groove 43 in said arm. rin angle bracket 44 is adj ustably secured to one end olf the arm 40 and to the upright member of said bracket, a tubular holder 45 for a tool 50 is secure-d, said tool being secured to the holder by a thumb screw 51. The tool 50 may be a marker, a
provision is made to adjust the tension of the spring. This may be accomplished by means of a manually operable screw 55 passing through a threaded holeV in a block 56 secured to the bracket 38 Vand engaging a block? secured to the support 3?.
The tool carrying arm 40Vis adjustable longitudinally to adjust the tool relatively to the work and vthus determineV the size et the object to be made. To hold the tool carrying bar rigidly at any desired adjustment, a screw post 58 is made rigid withthe plate 41 and passes upwardly through the slot in the arm 40, a manually operable clamping sleeve 59 beingV threaded on the post 58 and adapted to clamp said arm, a washer 60 being located between the sleeve 59 and said arm` 40. To accomplish accurate adjustment of the tool carrying arm 40, a graduated strip 61 may be secured to said arm (with graduations on both its side and Lipper edge), and the graduations of this strip may be made to register with a gage line 62 on the plate 41. The tool holding arm 40 may alsocarry a. stop plate 61a to engage the clamping sleeve 59, said stop plate havin-g an elongated slot 62a for the passage of screws 63,- whereby it may be adjusted and one end of said plate may be provided with a lip 64 to overlie the washer 60.
Instead of employing a. pencil asthe tool, I may use other forms ol' tools lor marking, cutting or grinding purposes. In Figure 12, is shown an adjustable tool holder for a pen 65. In this construction, an angle bracket 66 is adjustably secured to the 40, and to the vertical arm of this bracket, a vertically adjustable bar 67 is securedfby a thumb nut 68. To the upper end portion of the bar, the arm 69 oil the :pen 65 is secured by a thumb screw 70. Y A
In Figure 13, a bracket 71 is adjustably secured tothe arm 40 and supports a Vglass cutter 72 and to the top of said bracket, a knob 73 is secured whereby pressure may be applied to the glass cutter.
lVhen the device is to be used for large sized work which would require greater adjustment than can be obtained with the conprovided with guides to enter ,slots 76 in a frame 77 on which the support 37 is mounted,the frame 77 and support 37 thereon, being secured atany desired adjustment by means of clamping devices 78.
Having fully described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. in mechanism of' the character described, the combination with a rigid shaft, a driving wheel mounted thereon and a driving plate secured to the driving wheel, of a turning head comprising upper and lower plates spaced apart and secured together, the lower plate of said turning head having sliding connection with said driving plate, the upper plate of said turning head having a guideway on its under side disposed at right angles to the sliding` connection between the lower plate and the drivingplate, a rigid head on the rigid shaft and disposed between the plates of the Vturning head, a pivot member adjustably supported by said head, a iulcrum member mounted on the pivot member and movable in the guideway of the upper plate of the turning head, a support for work holding means mounted on said turning head, and tool holding means having a part disposed in a plane over the work supporting means.

driving means thereon and a driving member secured to said driving means, of a turn` ing head having sliding connection with said driving member, said turning head having a guideway at right angles to the sliding connection between said turning head and driving member, an adjustable fulcrum member carried by said shaft and disposed in said guideway, dowels on said turnin head, a supporting member mounted on the turning head and having sockets to receive said dowels, a work table on said supporting member, means connecting said supporting member and work table, and adjustable tool holding means having a part disposed in plane over the work table.
3. In mechanism of the character described, the combination with a turning head and means for turning the same, of a support, a hinged member thereon, a tool carrying arm adjustable longitudinally on said member, a tool holder carried by said arm and adapted to be disposed at right angles to said turning head, a spring connected with said hinged member and the support and operable to press a tool in said holder against the work supported by said turning head, and means for adjusting the tension oi said spring.
4. In mechanism of the character described, the combination with a turning head and means for turning the same, of a support, a hinged member thereon, a tool carrying arm adjustable longitudinally on said member, a tool holder carried by said arm and adapted to be disposed at approximately right angles to said turning head, a spring connected with said and with the support and operable to press a tool in said holder against the work supported by said turning head. and means tor adjusting said hinged member to vary the tension of the spring and regulate the pressure of the tool relatively to the work.
5. ln mechanism of the character described, the combination with a turning head and means for turning the same, ot' a support, a hinged member thereon, a tool carrying yarm adjustable longitudinally on said member, a tool holder carried by said arm and adapted to be disposed at right angles to said turning head, a spring connected with said hinged member and with said support and operable to press a tool in said holder against the work carried by said turning head, a part projecting from the hinged member and having a hole, a screw threaded through said hole to engage the support whereby the tension of the spring and hence the pressure of thetool relatively to the work may be adjusted.

In mechanism of the character described, thek combination with a turning head adapted to support work to be operated upon, and means for turning said head, of a support, a member hinged to said support, a longitudinally adjustable slotted arm. guiding means on said hinged member for said arm, a screw projecting upwardly from said guiding means and passing through the slot in the arm, a clamping device threaded on said screw and adapted to engage said arm to hold the same at any desired adjustment, a tool holder carried by said arm and disposed at approximately right angles to the work on the turning head, a spring connected with said hinged member and operable to apply pressure to the tool carried by said tool holder, means for limiting the' outward movement of said arm and the tool holder and tool, and graduated means for determining the accurate adjustment of said arm and the tool holder and tool carried thereby.
7. In mechanism of the character described, the combination with turning head and means for causing said head and work carried thereby to move in an elliptical path, of driving means for said turning head comprising a wheel for driving the turning head, a second wheel, a driving connection between said wheels, and manually operable means connected with said second wheel.
8. In mechanism of the character described, the combination with a base, of a shaft fixed thereto, a turning head, a sprocket wheel for the driving head mounted hinged member on said shaft, means for causing said turning head to move in an elliptical path, a second sprocket Wheel adjustably mounted on saidv base, a chain connecting said sprocket Wheels, and means whereby power may be applied to said second sprocket Wheel.

In mechanism of the character described, the combination with a base, a turning head mounted on said base and adapted to support Work, and means for driving said turningv head, of av tool carrying arm disposed over the turning head, a tool holder carried by said arm, a support for said' arm mounted on said base, means for securing said arm at any desired longitudinal adjustment, and an adjustable stop on said arm and cooperable with a part on said support to limit the movement of the arm in the direction from the support.
10.
