UNITED SAMUEL SEGAL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T0 SEGAL METALPnoDUOTs con:-
PANY, 11m, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
CYLINDER LOCK.
Application filed April 26, 1921. 7 Serial No. 464,715.
To'all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SEGAL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, inthe county of New York and State of New York, vhave invented certain new and, useful Improvements in Cylinder Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto cylinder or pin tumbler locks, the invention relating more particularly to the manner in which the cylinder itself is held or secured to the door or other support to which the lock is applied. The present invention constitutes in part improvements. on the invention embodied in my prior Patent No. 1,399,159, dated Dec. 6, 1921. I
The principal object of the invention is the production in a lock of the character de scribed of simple and effective means adapted to hold and fasten the lock cylinder in the usual opening in the door provided to receive the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock cylinder carrying a ring or escutcheon adapted to engage the face of the door which ring or 'escutcheon shall be adapted to engage the cylinder fastening means hereinbefore referred to and to move said fastening means into a position permitting the cylinder to be inserted within the opening in the door. 7
'A further object of the invention is the production of a lock cylinder provided with a face plate and with fastening means both acting to prevent the removal of a ring or escutcheon loosely carried by said cylinder.
A still further object ofthe invention is the production of a lock casing having a cover plate or other wall provided with novel means adapted to engage the wall of the opening which'receives the'lock cylinder to facilitate the mounting of the lock casing on the door in the proper position.
Still other and further objects andad- ,vantages will appear from the accompanying description, the invention consisting in the novel parts and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims. 7
In the accompanying drawing showing a practical embodiment of the invention:
1 is a section taken through a door showing the lock applied thereto. V
Fig. 2 is a plan viewof the lock cylinder and adjacent fastener. v
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2. r
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on 'the'line 4-4. of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawings:
'1 indicates ardoor and 2 the door frame. Said door is provided with an annular opening 3 for receiving the lock cylinder to be presently described. The lock casing is indicated at 4 and contains the locking me'c'h'a nism and is provided with the usual operating knob 5 as shown. 6 indicates'the rear wall or cover plate of said casing which is provided with flanges? preferably cut out of the material of said rear wall and then'bent over in a plane at right angles tothe plane of said rear wall. These flanges are adapted to engage the wall of the opening 3 whereby the lock casing maybe conveniently and expeditiously mounted on the door by suitable screws orbolts (not shown) in th'e'proper position as respects said opening 3, said flanges 7 acting as guides in an obvious manner whereby the proper position of the casing is obtained. I Q
8 indicatesthe cylinder of an ordinary tumbler lock supporting pin tumblers (not shown) in the tumbler housing 9 thereof. Said cylinder is provided with-enlarged portion 10, as shown, and it'has mounted therein a key plug 11 held from withdrawal forwardly through said cylinder by an end plate 12 secured to said plug by suitable parts including the cylinder screws and engaging the rear end of said cylinder. 13 indicatesa'spindle secfi'redto said key plug 11' and extending througha slot in the end plate 12=and rea'rwardly through the 'wall";6 of'the casing 4 and into said casing where it operatively engages the "lock mechanism to actuate the same whenja key is inserted in the key plug 11; from witha rotation of said plug (not shown) receiving the key plug-within the cylinder 8. 15 indicates a ring orescutcheon loosely carried by said cylinder and encircling the face plate 14 and adapted to engage the face of the do'orl when the parts are in proper mounted position. Said ringer escutcheon is provided with an annular inwardly turned flange 16 adapted to engage the rear side of saidface plate and providing aseat therefor. The cylinder 8 is also provided with laterally extending ears 17 preferably integral with said cylinder and having screw-threadedperforations I prongs with the intermediate or middle prong appreciably longer than the outside prongs whereby a biting engagement of all the prongs with the wall of the-opening 8 will always be effected, said opening being an annular one as has previously been described. The said cylinder fasteners 19 are ears 0 and pressing against the ring or escutcheon provided with slots 21 therein recelving 22 which are preferably integral withsaid cylinder and the ends of which are bent over as shown in Fig. 1, whereby a pivoted connection is provided between said eylinderjand said cylinder fasteners. The said cylinder fasteners 19 and the face plate 1 1 of the cylinder prOvidestops to prevent withdrawal of the ring or escutcheon from the cylinder in either direction.
Thismakes for convenience in the shipping of the parts and obviates any possibility of loss-of the ring or escutcheon. It also insures against the mounting of the ring or escutcheon in thewrong position on the cylinder as it is already loosely mounted thereonand itis impossible to reverse its positioni v I 7 To properly positionor mount the cyline der within the opening 3, assuming the lock casing l has not been fastened to the door, thescrews 18 are unscrewed and brought intoextreme inner position within the ears .17; The cylinder fasteners 19 are then swunginwardly on their. pivots which may beiaccomplished by: holding said cylinder 15 whereby the flange 16 thereof will engage and 7 press against -the cylinder fasteners swinging them ontheir pivots, whereby their adjacent sides or; backs are substantlally parallel. The cylinder is then inserted n the opening, the escutcheon held against the face of the door and the cylinder pressed inwardly to cause its faceplate to seat against the flange 16. V The screws 18 Y are then threaded or screwed forwardly .throughthe perforated ears 17 whereby the .wall. i v r 3. In a lock, the combination with a wall having an opening therein, of a cylinder 1n within said opening, an escutcheon loosely I forward end thereof will engage the cylinderfasteners, thereby forcing sa1d fasteners to swing or spread outwardly whereby the if prongs 20 thereof will bite into the wall of the'opening 8. The spreading outwardly of said fasteners and the biting of the prongs 20 into the wall of the openingby actuation of the screws 18 acts in an ob-' vious manner to slmultaneously draw the cylinder inwardly through said opening, whereby the face plate 14: thereof is tightly clamped against the flange 16 of the escutcheon and the escutcheon is tightly clamped against the face of the door. 1 j
When the cylinder is mounted in position within the op ning 3 in the manner just de scribed it is locked against withdrawal through said opening or against rotation therein until theiscrews. 18 are unthreaded or unscrewed and the prongs 20 of the cylin-- der fasteners are released from biting engagement with the wall of the opening. After the cylinder is properly mounted the lock casing may be fastened to the door in the manner previously explained.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a lock, the combination with a wall having an opening therein and a lock cylinder within said opening, a lock casing con-' iaining the lock mechanism and flanges cut out of the material of a wall of said casing and bent over to extend outwardly from said 7 casing andadapted to engage the wall of said opening and acting as guides to permit saidcaslng to be mounted in proper posltion on said wall.
2. In a lock, the combination with a wall having an opening therein, of a cylinder associated with said wall, a face plate on said cylinder, an escutcheon loosely carried by said cylinder, a flange on said escutcheon providing a seat for said I face plate and means engaging said cylinder and the wall of said opening to lock said cylinder in position and adapted upon actuation thereof to clamp said face plate against said flange and said escutcheon'against-the face of said carried by said cylinder, a flange on said escutcheon and fastening means engaging V I said cylinderland adapted 'tolbite-into the wall of said" openingto lock said; cylinder against withdrawal, said fastening. means be ng also adapted upon actuation thereof to draw said-cylinder inwardly; in said *opening whereby it will be clamped against the flange of said escutcheon and said a .cutcheon will be clamped against the face of said wall. v
4:. In a lock, the combination with a wall having an opening therein, of a cylinder within said opening, an escut-cheon eomprising a ring loosely carried by said cylinder, fastening means pivoted to said cylinder .andmeans carried by said cylinder adapted,
upon actuation, to force said fastening means to bite into the wall of said opening whereby said cylinder will be clamped against said escutcheon and said escutcheon will be clamped against the face of said Wall.
5. In a lock, the combination with a wall within said opening, a face plate on said' cylinder, fastening means adapted to bite into the wall of said opening to lock said cylinder in position within said opening and an escutcheon comprising a ring loosely carried by said cylinder intermediate said face plate and said fastening means and prevented from removal from said cylinder by said face plate and said fastening means.
