The present invention relates to trimming machines and more particularly to upper trimming machines which are employed in the manufacture of stitch-down shoes,
In making stitch-down shoes of one type, an upper of canvas is shaped on a last and formed with an outturned flange to which a relatively stiff and thin insole ofrub' berized canvas is secured by means of a row of staples inserted adjacent to the line where the outturned flange joins the body portion of the upper. A rubber welt is subsequently laid upon the outturned flange of the upper and is sewed to the flange and the insole, which welt is thereafter vulcanized or otherwise directly secured to an outsole outside the trimmed edges of the upper and insole. In order that this method may be followed, the marginal portions of the upper and insole must be trimmed 11111- formly distant from the body of the shoe before the welt and outsole are applied to the shoe.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a machine for thus trinr using the edges of the outturned flange and the insole.
l/Vith this and other objects in view, the features of the present invention consist in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the advantages of which will. be obvious to those skilled in the art. 7
The several features of the present inven tion will be clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

The shoe illustrated in Fig. 6 comprises an upper 2 of canvas which is shaped on a. last 4 so that its margin will form an outturned flange 6. The outturned flange 6 is fastened to an insole 8 of rubberized canvas by means of arow of staples or other fastening means 10 inserted adjacent to the crease or the line of junction with the body portion of the upper.. The outturned flange and the insole require trimming so that their edges will beeven and preferably uniformly distant from the aforesaid crease. The embodiment of the present invention illustrated in the drawings, which is adapted to perform this trimming operation, comprises a stationary trimming shear 12 having a hori zontal cutting edge 14, and a horizontally movable shearing knife 16, the cuttin edge of which works across the cutting e ge of the stationary shear 12. In order to insure that the trimming cut shall be made a uniform distance from the junction line of the outturned flange and lasted portion of the upper, the lower end of the stationary knife 12 is extended and shaped to slide in the crease or angle at said line so as to serve, as a gage. A machine for operating upon the upper and sole of a stitch down shoe while the parts are on a last having, in combination, means for trimming the edges of the outturned flange of the upper and sole, and means comprising-converging elements for bringing the outtu'rned flange and sole to. gether in advance of said trimming means.

A shoe-trimming machine comprising means arranged to trim the marginal extension formed by the upper and sole of a stitchdown shoe, and two cooperative elements arranged in confronting relation to guide the untrimmed work to said trimming means, one of said elements being arranged to engage the body'of the shoe and the upper face of said marginal extension and to yield in a direction away from the body of the shoe and along lines substantially paraliel to the plane of the sole.
5. A machine for operating upon therupper andsole of a stitch down shoe having, in combination, means for; trimming the edges of the sole and the outturned flange of the upper, and means relatively to which the work is freely movable e'dgewise of the sole for guiding the untrimmed portion of said flange and sole to said trimming means, said guiding means having confronting portions arranged toclose separated portions of the V flange and sole.

A shoe-trimming machine comprising means arranged to trim the marginal extension of the upper and sole, and a yieldable work-guiding device having a channel arranged to guide the untrimmed portion of said marginal extension to said trimming means, said yieldable device being arranged to bear on the body of the shoe so as to follow the contour thereof and take various positions automatically as the work is fed to trim progressively.
7. A machine for operating upon the upper and sole of a stitch down shoe while the parts are on a last having, in combination, means for trimming the edges ofthe sole and the o-utturned flang of the upper, and means arranged to close separated portions of said flange and sole in advance of the trimming locality, said closing means bemg yieldable and arranged to bear on the body of the shoe so as to follow the contour thereof as the shoe is fed to trim progressively.
8. A. trimming machine having, in combination,a stationary trimming knife,aco-
operating reciprocating trimming knife and a member yieldable transversely of the trimmlng cut for engaging opposite sides of the work to present the edges of the work to the y action of the trimming knives.

A shoe-trimming machine comprising means arranged to trim the marginal extension of the upper and sole, fixed means arranged to bear on the body of the shoe and thereby guide the latter relatively to said trimming means, and a device arranged to bear continuously on the upper faceof the untrimmed portion of said marginal extension so as to guide the latter to said trim ming means said device being arranged to yield and formed to bear also on the bodyof the shoe so as to follow the contour thereof and take various positions automatically as spaced a fixed distance apart and arranged the Work is fed to trim progressively. to engage opposite faces of said. extension 10.
