Be it known that I, CLARENCE H. `WIL manson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Truck Side Frames; and l do hereby de- Clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malreand use the same.
The invention relates to trucks for railway vehicles and more particularly to new and use-ful improvements in the construction f of side frames therefor.
The principal object of my invention, broadly stated, is to strengthen and simplify To this end the primary feature of the invention consists in providing a side frame in which the compression member and the bolster guide columns are integral, and in providing' a tension member having a recess or channel, portions of the compression member being adapted to lit within the said recess.
Another feature of the invention consists in forming ay truck side frame from two main members7 the said members being pro vided with interitting portions and maintained in assembled relation by the journal box bolts.

In the preferred form. of my invention which has been illustra-ted in Figs. l to 4, inclusive, the side frame is generally designated by the numeral l. twill be understood that while only a half portion of the side frame is illustrated the frame 1 isy symmetrical about its central vertical axis.
The top arch or compression member 2 preferably comprises a top web 3 and a pair of downwardly directed' flanges Li, d, the said flanges adjacent the central portion of the side frame being shaped to form a bolster opening 5 j and being cut away intermediate the bolster opening in the end portions of the frame as at 6 to lighten theside frame. The portions of the flanges 4; intermediate the openings 5 and 6 form Vthe bolster guide columns 7. The said columns are connected7 adjacent the opening 5, by the web. 8. Thexlower ends of the said columns are preferably extended laterally towards the center of the said frame as shown at 9, and may be. provided with a shoulder 10 intermediate the ends of the said extensions. .The sidewalls 1l of the laterally extending portions 9 are inclined inwardlyr as at 12, the object and purpose of which will be hereinafter described. The web- 8 extends below the botmember 2, it will only be necessary for a full understanding of this Jform to describe the points at which the modifications occur.
Adjacent the points of intersection of the bolster guide columns and the tension member 32 the said columns are provided with laterally extending flanges 36 and 37. The flanges ST are shaped to conform to the adjacent portions oit the lips 33 to which they are connected by the rivets 38. VAt the lower ends oi the flanges 36 there is provided a lateral extension 39 the inner ends of which are adapted to engage the spring plank 29. These extensions perform the function of. the shoulders l() hereinbefore referred to. The connecting web which forms the inner .tace of the bolster guide columns is omitted from a point adjacent the upper ends of the flanges 36 and the side walls 40 of each column below the flanges 3'? are'inwardly inclined so as to closely ht within the channel QS of the tension member. At its outer ends the member 34 is channel shaped in section instead of box shaped as shown in Figs. l and 2, and the side iianges di ot the end portions adjacent their lower edges are provided with laterally extending lips -lQ shaped to conform to the cutout portions of 'the lips 33 to which they are connected by means oi the rivets 43. Having now `fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a truck side frame, the combination with a compression member comprising a cast beam furnished with integral bolster guides or strut columns, of a tension member comprising a channel shaped beam, portions oit the said bolster guide columns beingadapt-- ed to have a wedging fit within the channel of the tension member, and means for connecting said members adjacent the ends thereof.
2. ,in a truck side frame, the combination with a compression member of a flanged tension member adapted to cooperate therewith, the end port-ions` ot said members being adapted to contact, and means connecting said end portions` and bolster guide columns integral with said compression member, said columns having the lower portions thereof spaced apart, the said portions oi' said bolster guide columns extending between and adapted to have a wedging engagement with the flanges of the said tension member.
A truck side frame comprising a compression member provided intermediate the ends thereof with integral bolster guides, the
lower portions ofwhicli are spaced apart,and a tension member, the end portions of which are connected to the corresponding portions of the compression member, said tension member having a wedge shaped recess therein adapted to receive portions of the said bolster guides, the side walls of said recesses engaging the adjacent side walls of the bolster guides.
4. A truck side frame comprising a comv pression member provided intermediate the ends thereof with downwardly7 extending bolster guide columns, a tension member having an upwardly facing channel, the ends of said columns having a wedging engagement with the side walls ot' the channel ott the tension member.
5. A truck side frame comprising a compression member provided with spaced bolster guide columns, a tension member passing beneath and wedgingly connected to said columns, and means for connecting said compression member and'said tension member, said means also being adapted to retain the journal boxes in assembled relation.
6. A truck side Jframe comprising a compression member ;turnished with imperforate integral guide columns, a tension member having a channel therein adapted to receive portions ot said guide columns, and means on said columns for engaging a spring plank in line with the web thereof to prevent the approach of the said columns.
7. A truck side frame comprising a compression member furnished with a plurality of wedge shaped portions, a tension member cooperating with said compression member, said last named member having a wedge shaped channel therein, the said portions of the compression member being adapted to fit within the said channel of the tension member, and means for connecting said members adjacent some of the wedge shaped portions.
8. A truck side frame comprising a compression member, spaced bolster-guide columns connected thereto, a tension member having a channel therein adapted to receive portions ot said guide columns, a spring plank adapted to extend between said guide columns, and means integral with said columns and extending under and engaging said spring plank whereby the said spring plank serves to maintain the guide columns in assembled position.
