To all whom t may 00h/cern.'
Be it known that l, CHESTER F. LEWIS, al citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Hair Clipper, of which the following is a specification. v
1 This invention relates to hair clippers.
The object of the invention is to provide a hair clipper adaptable for use by an individual on himself by either handor mechanical means and which is reversible so that either the upper or the lower face may be used.
Another object is to provide a device of this character in which an enclosed spring 'is arranged so as to be put under initial strain in assembling the clipper /yw'ithout the use of screws or other similar fasteners.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
1n the accompanying drawingsz- Figure 1 represents a plan view of the clipper with the top plate removed and the connectin bolt shown in transverse section.l
Fig. 2 1s a longitudinal section with the handles in side elevation. l
Fig; 3 is a detail plan view of the bottom plate.
Fig. 4 is .a top plan view of the cover plate with the members thereof supported and arranged in juxtaposition ready for assembling. I i
Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of the movable blade, and
Fig 6 is a similar view of the actuating spring detached.
lln the embodiment illustrated, the clipper constituting this invention comprises a bottom plate 1 to which is fixed a cutting blade 21and a handle 3. This handle 3 is preferably detachably connected with the bottom plate as shown at 3a in Fig. 1 and is equipped with a laterally extending finger grip 4, the handle being disposed at an oblique angle to the plate (see Fig.. 3). Y
Set in the bottom plate 1 is aguide plate 5 on which is mounted 'to slide a movable double edged cuttin blade 6. A tension sprmg 7 1s set in sai guide plate. @ne end of this sprin 7 is set in a recess or groove 8 in the gui e plate while the other end of y said spring is mounted in a notch or recess 9 in the head 11 of a handle member 10. This handle member head 11 is'provided with a radially extending arm 12 which is mounted in a recess 6a in the rear edge of the movable blade 6. This head 11 is rotatable about a center pin 13 which is carried by the bottom plate 1 and extends upwardly through the guide plate 5 and around which the spring 7 is coiled. This mounting of' the coiled vspring 7 with one end engaged with the guide plate 5 and the other with the head 11 of the handle 10 operates to maintain tension throughout the stroke of the handle 10. A cover plate 15 ts over the head 11 and is held in place by pins 16 which ht in sockets 17 in said cover plate. This cover plate 15 is constructed in two parts similar to the bottom plate 1, one of which constitutes a xed cutting blade 2a detachably secured to top 15.
A cap 18 has threaded engagement with the upper end of the center pin 13 and has its open end flared, which end bears against a Hat spring washer 19 mounted on pin 13 over head 11 and which operates to-hold handle head 11 and blade 6 in place.
This cap 18 has a lateral Hangs 18a at its closed end which engages a beveled opening in top 15 and when screwed home, operates in conjunction with pins 16 to hold the top in operative position.
From the above description it will `be obvious that with the parts assembled as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the enclosed spring 7 n is so arranged as to be under initial strain 1n assembling the parts of the clipperso that no screws or other similar elementsare required to connect it or to place it. under `strain asis customary 1n clippers ordlnarily used.
llt will thus be seen that a clipper con structed as herein shown and described is reversible so that either the upper or the lower cutting face may be used, the arrange' ment of the handles in horizontal plane with the cutting blade 6 and at an obllque angle lll@ their front ends with a chamber formed between them, a movable cutting blade mounted 'to reciprocate between said fixed cutting blades, a handle fixed to one of said plates, another handle having a head mounted to rotate in said chamber and engagel said movable blade whereby the turning of said head will reciprocate said blade, and aspring-to place the parts under tension.
2. Ahair clipper comprising upper and lower plates havingcutting blades at their frontv ends and their rear ends outwardly bowed to form when assembled a chamber Jetween them, a center pin extending through said chamber, a guide mounted on said pin in said chamber, a movable cutting blade mounted to reciprocate on said guide and positioned to cooperate with the cutting blade of the plates, and means or reciprocating said movable blade whereby either cutting face may be presented for use. Y
3. In a hair clipper, upper and lower plates having cooperating cutting blades at their front ends and their rear ends bowed outwardly to form a chamber between them when assembled, a handle member Iixed to said lower plate, a guide mounted in said lower plate, a center pin carried by said lower plate and extending through said chamber, a cap engaged with said upper plate and screwed on said center pin, pins and sockets cooperating to hold said upper plate inoperative position, a movable blade mounted to slide on said guide and to cooperate with said fixed blades, a coiled spring carried by said center pin with one end engaged with said guide, a handle having a head mounted in said chamber and engaged with said movable blade, said head being rotatable on said pin, the other end of the coiled spring being engaged with said head, the rotation of the head operatingto reciprocate the movable blade.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHESTER FRANKLIN LEVIS.
