AIR JACK.
Application nieu Maren 11, 1921. serial No. 451,469.
To all whom t may conce/m:
' view which will appear as Be it known that I, JAMES S. GILDAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blaine, in the county of Whatcom and State of yWashington, have invented anew and useful Air Jack, of which the following is a specification. Y
This invention relates to jack construc-v tions, and more particularly to p a fiuid operated jack to be employed connection with motor vehicles or the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a jack of this characterwhich will be operated .by fluid pressure admitted to a cylinder in which the lifting element is positioned. y
A further-objectvof the invention is to provide a novel form of valve construction vto be used in connection with the jack/ for controlling the passag? ofair to and vfrom the cylinder of the jac A With the foregoing and other objects in the description proceeds, the invention-resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and inV the vdetails of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes. in the precise embodiment of the 'invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a jack constructed in accordance with the present, invention.
Figure 2 illustrates a plan"view of the same.
Figure 3' illustrates a sectional view taken onY line 3f-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 desi ates the body portion of the jack which is ored to provide a cylinder 6, the cylinder being closed at its upper end as by means ofthe head 7, which carries a nut 8 for securing the packing 9 to the head, for insuring a Huid-tight connection between the lifting rod 10, and the head 7.
The body 5 also includes a base 11 which has afportion thereof extending laterally beyond the side wall of the body portion 5 to provide a foot rest whereby the jack will be insured against lateral movement w'hen the same is in operation.
.Forming a part of the body portion 5 is an enlargement 12, which is bored to prowith respect to vide a passageway 13 communicating with the cylinder 6 through the passageway 14. At the base of the body portion isa passageway 15 providing communication between the bore 16 and cylinder 6, so that air may enter the cylinder 6 through the bore 16 and passageway 15.
Communicating with the passageway 13 and bore 16, is a valve casing 117, there being provided relatively short pipes 18 and` 19 for .establishing the communication betweenthe valve casing 17 and passageway 13 and bore 16. Operating within the valve casing 17 is a valve member 2() provide with an operating handle 21 formed at the upper end thereof, and by means of which the valvemember maybe moved within the casing.
. his valve member is provided with openings 22 and 23, designed to register with openings in the wall of the valve casing. g.
The valve member is provided with a centraljpassageway 24 designed to communicate with the pipes 18 and 19 respectively, so that when the valve member is moved to predetermined positions, communication will be established between the cylinder 6 and valve casing.
The valve nipple 25 extends laterally from the valve casing 17 and provides means for connecting the supply tube to the body portion of the jack to admit air -to the valve casing, and to the cylinder 6.
This nipple 25 .is arranged substantially centrally of the valve casing 17 in which the valve member 20 moves, the valve mem- 'ber 20` being provided with spaced open- A piston indicated| at -26 is carried at the I lower end of the lifting rod 10, the .piston being provided with suitable packing 27 to insure a {luid-tight connection between the walls of the cylinder 6 and piston to insure .the lifting rod receiving the entire force of the incoming fluid..
At the opposite end of the connecting rod 10 is a head 28 to engage under an axle or the like, for preventing slipping of the jack the device being lifted.
ln the operation of the device, with the valve member 10 in the position as indicated by Figure 1, it will be seen that as air is forced into the bore 16 and into the cylinder '6, the air contacts with the piston to body portion said body 6 being forced outwardly throughl the pas-v sageways 14,13 and opening 22.
Upon the reverse movement of the rod l0, the valve is moved until the central passageway communicates with the pipe 18,
which brings the openings 23 in communication with the pipe 19 to permit the air con tained in the lowerportion of the cylinder 6 to be exhausted therethrough.
Having thus described the what is claimed as new is j In a fluid 'actuated jack, a cylindrical portion having passageways extending longitudinallyv thereof and in communication with the upper and invention,
lowerfends of the cylindrical body portion,
a tubular valve casing `in communication valve nipple communicating with the hollow -valve to direct air y to the passageways. v In testimony that I claim the foregoing -as my own, I have hereto aixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
' JAMES S. GILDAY.
