Be it knoWn that We, GEORGE M. FiaMEs and JOHN C. RINGE, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Bridgeport.r and Stratford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Tape- Threading Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

rlhe invention has for an object to avoid breakage of parts of the machine and possible injury to an operator upon the presentation to the threading implements of a button or like article in which the threading apertures are distorted, or otherwise not properly spaced or correctly positioned for entrance by said implements.
Another object of this invention isto pro vide means for automatically preventing the feeding of tape to the threading implements in the event that the articleaperturespare not properly alined With the threading im'- plements for entrance by the latter.
The invention has for further object to facilitate the straightening out of jams which may possiblyy occur in the article-hopper and the chute'leading therefrom by articles clogging the passageways. Y
@ther and minor objects of the invention wil be apparent from the following descripand claims. y f ln accomplishing the objects herein set forth, the present invention has been embodied. as improvements, in the machine clearly illustrated in our pending patent application before referred to. rI'his machine comprises a plurality of reciprocating threading implements to which articles are automatically presented to be threaded With short lengths of tape. ylhe tape'is automatically drawn from a suitable supply, severed into desired lengths and presented to the threadinimplements which seize the tape 1921. serial No. 486,957.

To threading1 implements, in the prior machine referred to, are in the form of hookneedles which enter the apertures of an article to be threaded. lf the apertures of the article are for any reason improperly positioned, it is apparent that breakage of the article or of a'machine part may occur. This not only occasions aloss by reason of Wasted time and broken parts, but'may injure an operator by flying pieces of the broken article or machine part. ln order to entirely overcome any possible defects of this character in the machine, the present invention comprehends the provision of a yielding connection between the threading implements and their actuating mechanism whereby if for any reason any obstruction is offered'to the free passage of the implements, movement of the latter is rarrested Without injury and Without discontinuing the operation of the actuating mechanism. When the threading implements are yieldingly arrested in this manner, a device is permitted to become effective to open the tape-feeding jaws to release the tape.
According to the present improvement, the article hopperl is so arranged With respeet to its driving connections as to permit of its ready removal from the machine to straighten out article-jams clogging the hop per or the chute leading therefrom.

Rotation of the article with the chuteV by reason of the action of the spring 49 brings the apertures of the former into alineinent with the pins 75v whereupon the article drops by gravity upon the article-supporting plate The cam 60 now acts to advance the feed-slide plate 64 which engages the pinned or registered article and advances it into threading position, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The threading implements 16 now descendvto enter the apertures of the article and thereby depress the pins 75, which action is permitted by the clearance provided by the groove 74. The pins, when clear of the article are immediately retracted by the spring 79 into their initial position, while the feed-slide 64 is returned during the upward movement of the implements 16.

Should it occur that the apertures in the article to be threaded are not properly alined for entrance by the threading implements, whereupon the'latter do, not complete their'q descending movementas described herein, then itis undesirable that the tape befed owing tothe waste of tape and the possibility 'of clogging ,the .operating parts of the machine. The cam-plate 129 is adapted to beengaged by a cam-lug 13() -provided on the cam-member 116 so that during the advancing movements of the plate 99, the fingers 128 are diverted against the action of a spring 131 out of thepath of movement of the tape-gripping jaws. After the plate 99 has been retracted suliiciently to permit the cam-lug 130 to ride the rounded end of the cam-plate 129, the spring 131 acts to cause the fingers 128 to engage the tape upon opposite sides of the ascending threading implements and hold it against the Shanks of the latter to insure seizure of the tape by the hooks of the implements. It will 'be observed that a clearance slot 132, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, is provided in the article-supporting plate 67 to permit the movement of one of the fingers 128.
Suitably secured upon the shaft 56 is a knife-carrying arm 133 carrying a camengaging element 134 actedupon by a cam i 135 provided upon the rotary shaft 61. A
coiled spring 136 surrounding the shaft 61 and one end of which engages the machine frame and the other end a collar 137 car-v ried by the shaft, holds the cam-element 134 in contact with its actuating cam. Adjustably secured upon`the knife-carrying arm133 is a knife-blade 138 of which the severing edge is movable across the path of the tape and coacts with a stationary blade 139 suitably secured upon the block 90. By means of this'construction the desiredv lengths of tape are automatically severed during the operation of the machine. v
Atapeholding finger 140 is suitably secured upon a vibratorv arm 141 projecting laterally from an oscillating shaft 143 suitably journaled in the machine frame. Secured upon the shaft 143 is an arm 144 carrying a roll 145 in engagement with a cam 146 upon the rotary shaft 61. The roll 145 is held in engagement with its actuating cam by means of a coil-spring 147 surrounding the shaft 143 and one end of which enters an aperture in a collar 148 adjustably secured upon the latter shaft while the other end bears against a portion of the machine frame. The function of the finger 140 is to engage the tape between the apertures of the article and hold the tape against bodily movement during the threading operation, thereby insuring that the free ends of the threaded tape are of substantially equal lengths.
As in our prior patent application hereinbefore yreferred to, there is provided an article-ejector 149, a guard 150 and a chute 151 but, as these parts form no direct part of the present invention7 nol further description thereof is deemed necessary.y
Havingv thus set forth the nature of the invention, what we claim herein is- 1. In a machine Yfor threading short sec tions of tape into'buttons, in combination, a threading-implement carrying bar, a 'plural-- ity of hooked'threading-implements carried by said bar, a button-holder adapted'to sustain a button in position for entrance by said threading-implements, a reciprocating bar, means for reciprocating said bar, and a yielding connection between said bars norv mally causing movement of said bars in unison but permitting abnormal arrest of the implement-carrying bar during the continued movement of the reciprocating barv upon the occasion of an implement striking a button sustained by said button-holder.

The combination in a machine having a rotary actuating shaft and a threading-Y implement, of a tubular bar, operative connections between the actuating shaft and said tubular bar for reciprocating the latter, a threading-implement carrying bar arranged telescopically within the tubular bar, a coacting guide-block and guideway prorotary actuating shaft and a threading-implement, of a tubular bar. a slotted guidelvided on said bars preventing relative axial way provided in said tubular bar, operative f connections between the actuating shaftand said tubular bar for reciprocating the latter, a threading-implement carrying bar arranged telescopically within the tubular bar, a guide-block carried by said threading-implement carrying bar and entering the lguideway in the tubular bar, and a spring` seated within said tubular bar acting to maintain said guide-block in a definite position in said guideway to cause reciprocation of said bars in unison but permitting arrest of the movement of the threading-implement carrying bar during the continued movement of the tubular bar.
