To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. DONALD- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Oil Burners and Heaters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the" accompanying drawings.
This invention relates generally to oil burners and more particularly to one intended for use in connection with a furnace or stove for the purpose of generating sufficient heat to heat the dwelling or building within which the stove orfurnace is arranged.
The object of thevinvention is to provide an exceedingly cheap and simple device which will produce the maximumamount of heat from the minimum quantity of 011 consumed and a still further object is to provide a device which will be safe and easily operated.
With these various objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination or arrangement of parts, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation showing the practical application of my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the oil receiving bowl; Fig. 3 is avertical sectional view of the oil receiving bowl, the coverarranged thereon together with the oil and air pipes; and Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of the cover.
In carrying out my invention I employ a furnace casing or stove 10 which may be of any suitable construction and upon the grate 11 thereof I arrange a bed 12 of cement or other suitable material. Centrally arranged upon this bed I place a bowl 13, the bottom of which is flat, upon the underside so as to rest securely upon the cement bed but upon the interior the bowl is formed with a central boss 14: which is apertured as shown, said boss extending upwardly a considerable distance as most clearly shown in Fig. 3. An oil supply pipe 15 passes upwardly through the boss and in practice 'I preferto surround the delivery end of the pipe by a packing of asbestos 16 arranged between the oil feed pipe 15 and a pipe 17 which fits snugly into the bore produced in the boss of the bowl. By providing the asbestos insulation around the delivery end of the oil supply pipe 15. I prevent the carbonization of the oil and thereby avoid clogging up of the feed pipe. The bowl is formed with an outlet opening 18 at one side thereof adjacent the top and from which leads the overflow pipe 19, said overflow pipe discharging into any suitable receptacle 20 which is carried upon the end of a lever 21 fulcrumed to a bracket 22 and operating the cut-off valve 23 when the oil overflow from the'bowl accumulates in the proper spaced relation with reference to said bowl, the length of the supporting feet determining the amount of space between the bowl and cover. The dome-shaped cover 25 has a large central opening 27 into which fits the lower end of an air pipe 28 the upvper end'of said pipe being projected outwardly through the furnace casing or stove and preferably through the door 10 thereof and in practice I prefer to make the air pipe 28 right angular in shape, the portion extending through the door or casing being horizontal and that portion which is connected to the cover being vertical as shown.
The oil from the feed pipe 15 overflows into the bowl and is lighted and the air is drawn down through the pipe 28 and supplies the necessary air for combustion and the bowl and cover and air pipe all become exceeding hot and surrounding the lower end of the air pipe is a steam coil 29, the lower end i of which 80 is passed through the air pipe and projected down into the burner substantially on a line with the edge of the cover and the upper end of the coil is connected to a steam generator 30 which is preferably supported upon the air pipe 28 and inasmuch as thisair pipe become exceedingly hot the necessary heat is supplied for generating the steam in the'generator 30 and this steam is injected into the burner direct-- ly above the delivery end of the oil supply pipe and not only aids in drawing inthe air but also commingles steam with the' air and with the burning oil so that practically complete combustionof the oil is obtained. Supply pipes 31 lead into the steam generator and are controlled by any standard type of automatic control valve 32 arranged upon the exterior of the furnace casing or stove.
It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap and simple form of burner, one which is safe in use and one whichwill produce an exceedingly large amount of heat for a minimum amount of oil used. It will also be noted that owing the the automatic oil cut-off, all danger of the oil overflowing due to non-combustion will be avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: V
1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with an oil receiving bowl havng an oil. pipe leading thereto and an overflow pipe leading therefrom, a cover for said bowl spaced above the same, an air pipe leading into said cover and a steam pipe passing through the air pipe and projected into the space between the bowl and cover, all of said parts being contained within a suitable casing.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a suitable casing having an imperforate partition arranged therein, of a bowl resting upon said partition and having an oil supply pipe leadin thereto and an overflow pipe leading therefrom, a cover arranged above and spaced from said bowl, an air pipe extending from the exterior of the case into the said cover and a steam pipe having its ends projected into the space between the bowl and cover.
In a device of the kind described, the combination with a suitable casing havlng an imperforate partition, of a bowl located upon said partition and having an oil supply pipe leading thereto and an overflow pipe leading therefrom, a cover supported upon and spaced above said bowl, an air supply pipe extending from the exterior of the case and having its lower end connected to the cover, a steam generator supported upon said air pipe, a steam pipe leading from said steam generator and projected into the space between the bowl and cover.
