Description

T. H; BANKS.
Molds for Casting Glass Letters.
No.l47,302. 'PatentedFeb.10.1874-.
A z I Wilhesses: lnvemnn- -Annmeys.
UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE H. BANKS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, WILLIAM H. BANKS, AND JAMES E. TILL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN mores FOR eAsTme GLASS LETTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14?,302, dated February 10,1874; application filed September 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE H. BANKs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mold for Casting Letters, 820., of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents the mold opened, and inverted to show the die right-side up. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same closed and in position for casting, taken through the line 00 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the mold, which is made of iron, and in two parts, hinged to each other at one end, and secured at the other end by a link or other Well-known and convenient fastening. In one of the parts A is formed a re cess, a of such a size as to contain a die, B, in which is formed the mold of the letter or other object to be cast. The die B is fittedcavity of the die 13, the upper edge of said die B forming a part of the bottom of the said rccess a as shown in Fig. 2. The month of the recess a is made a little smaller than the body of said recess, so that the plunger 0 may fit accurately into said mouth, and a space may be left for the surplus melted substance around said plunger.
In using the device, the mold A is heated to such a temperature that it will not cool the melted glass or other substance which is then poured into the recess a The plunger O is then forced into the recess a pressing the melted substance into the cavity of the die B. In this Way, by having a number of dies B, which are comparatively inexpensive, a variety of letters or other small objects may be cast with the same mold A, thus enabling said objects to be cast rapidly and at small expense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of twopart mold A, having recesses a ed, the die B, and the plunger O, relatively constructed to admit of casting glass letters, in the manner specified.
itnesses: THEODORE I-I. BANKS.
