" BUILDER S TOOL.
. Applicationrfiled February 6, 1922. Serial No 534,638.
1 '0 all to 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY It. ROEGLIN, a citizen of the United States, and resident 01?. Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin,- have invented new and useful Improvements in- Builders Tools, oi which the following is a description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The invention relates to builders tools.
In the usual manner of putting up buildings having wooden uprights or walls, it is necessary to have one or more men hold and maintain the upright in a plumb position while another secures it to the adjacent structure. To permit the carpenter who does the nailing or fastening of the upright 01- wall to also bring and secure the upright or wall in its proper position without a helper, I have provided an adjustable brace, engageable with the upright and with a relatively fixed support, which may be readily manipulated and whose use effects a saving in labor in the erection of a building.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the device herein after described and all equivalents.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a side view of a device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a front view thereof; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings the numerals 4 designate alined rods having threaded inner ends 5 upon which a turnbuckle 6 is mounted and provided with projecting pins 7 to facilitate moving it. The threaded connection between the rods 4 and the turnbuckle 6 is such that turning the turnbuckle 6 in one direction causes the rods 4 to move toward each other, and in the opposite direction away from each other.
Each of the rods 4 carry a timber-engag ing clamp at its outer end. Each clamp includes a pair of jaws 8 pivotally mounted at their inner ends upon pivot screws 9, or other suitable pivots which are mounted in the ears 10 of complementary sections 11 forming a collar seated in an annular groove 12 of a nut 13 in threaded engage ment with the outer threaded end 14 of the rod 4. The intermediate portions of the jaws 8 are each respectively connected by screws 15 or other suitable fastening means to the forked portions 16 of a link 17 the inner ends of said links being pivotally mounted upon pivot screws18, or other suitable pivots, which are mounted. in the ears 19 of a member 20. The member 20 has a threaded bore 21 fitting end 14 of the rod and aset screw 22engaging the rod to secure saidmember against rotation with respect to the rod. The jaws .8 have pointed ends 23 to engage in the timber or othermaterial forming the building structure, and the nut 13 has projecting pins 24 to facilitate-turning it. 7 7
With the construction ofclamp above described turning the nut 13 so as to move it outward on its rod 4 produces a relative movement between said nut and the links 17 which causes said links to swing the jaws about their lower pivots and draw their outer pointed ends together so as to tightly engage the structure to which the device is applied, and an inward movement of said nuts causes an outward movement of said jaws.
By way of illustrating one of the uses to which the tool above described can be put, I show two timbers 25 and 26, in Fig. 1, which it is desired to secure together at right angles to each other. To accomplish this one of the jaws is clamped to the timber 25, as previously described, and the other jaw.
is clamped to the timber 26 when the same is in an approximately upright position. Then the turnbuckle 6 is rotated to move the rods 4 with respect to each other to'so adjust the distance between the clamps as to bring the timber 25 to its desired plumb position and maintain it in this position while it is being nailed or otherwise secured to the timber 26; It is to be understood that when sections of a wall of the so-called portable buildings are being put up several of the tools above described may be used on the wall.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any specific form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
What I claim as my invention is: r 1. In a buildin tool, the combination of a pair of clamps iaving adjustable timberholding and. supporting jaws, and a lengthwise adjustable supporting connection be tween said clamps.
2. In a building tool, the combination of a sectional rod, an adjustable turnbuckle connecting the sections of said rod together, and an adjustable timber-holding and supporting jaw clamp at the outer end of each section.
3. In a building tool, the combination of a sectional rod, an adjustable turnbuckle connecting the sections of said rod together, each of said rod sections having threaded outer ends, a nut mounted on the threaded outer end of each rod, a pair of timber-holding and supporting jaws, and means operatively connected to each nut and rod for moving said jaws toward or away from each other.
4:. In a building tool, the combination of a pair of rods having threaded outer ends. means for moving said rods with respect to each other, a timber-holding andsupporting clamp mounted on the outer end of each rod comprising a nut mounted on the thread outer end of the rod, :1 pair of clamp the jaws intermediate their ends and to said rod cooperating with said nut and collar to swing said jaws toward or away from each other.
5. In a building tool, the combination of a pair of rods having threaded outer ends, 1
a turnbuckle connecting the inner ends of said rods, a timber-holding and supporting clamp mounted on the outer end of each rod comprising a nut mounted on said threaded outer end of the rod, a pair of clamping jaws, a collar carried by said nut and free to rotate with respect thereto, pivotal connections for the lower ends of said jaws with the collar, and links connected to the jaws intermediate their ends and operatively connected to said rod. 7
In testimony whereof I alfix my si -nature.
HENRY R. ROEGLIN.
