To all whom 'tmay concm Be it known that I, STEPHEN J. ADKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort lVorth, in the County of Tarra-nt and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Lock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide novel means for imparting sliding movement to -a looking bolt, in a lock, and to provide novel means for latching the bolt against movement; v

In carrying out the invention there is provided a casing denoted generally by the numeral 1 and including a frame 2 and side plates 3 and 4, the side plates having cars 5 received within the frame 2 and connected thereto by securing elements 6. The frame 2 has an inwardly projecting boss 7 carrying a guide spindle 8 'slidably received' in a bore 10 formed in the inner end of a bolt 9 mounted to slide on the bottom of the casing 1, the bolt including a head 11 which is beveled as shown at 15,'the bolt including, further, a foot 14, the numeral 12 marking an opening in the casing 1 wherein the head 11 of the bolt 9 is slidably mounted.
The head 11 of the bolt 9 is provided with shoulders 16, and there are recesses 17 in the bolt, to the rear of the shoulders. Seats 18 are fashioned in the bolt at the ends of the recesses 17. The foot 14 of the bolt is provided with lateral projections 19. A helical compression spring 20 surrounds the spindle 8, one end of the spring abutting against the boss 7, and the other end of the spring abutting against the foot 14 of the bolt to advance the bolt. The numeral 21 marks a bowed spring, the ends of which are received in the seats 18, the Construction of the upper edge of thebolt being duplicated on the lower edge of the bolt, as shown in F igure 5, to permit an aXial re versal of the bolt.

The shaft 22 is provided with end porti ons 24 which may be rectangular in cross section, or of any other desired shape, the'ends 24 of the sha ft 22 being housed' within the outer ends of the bearings 23 asshown in 'Figure 4. Intermediate its ends, the shaft 22 is supplied' with a hub 50,from which projects' a latch 25.. Thehub 50 is supplied at its inner end with acam 26. A stop 27 is mounted on the A tubular shaft 28 is journaled for rota'` tion in the'side plates 3 and4and 'is' provided with an opening 29 adapted'to receive a spindle 30 carrying knobs 31. The shaft 28 has. a depending' arm 32, as shown in F igure 6, the arm 32 coacting with one of the projections 19 on the looking bolt 9. A slot 33 is formed in the arm 32, the slot defining a depending finger 34. A pivot element 35 is' mounted in the finger 34 and in the arm 32. One end of a link 36 is disposed between the finger 34 and the arm 32 and is oarried by the pivot element 35. The other end of the link 36 is provided with an opening 37 adapted to receive a pivot element 38 mounted in the lip-per' end of a lever 39, fulcrumed intermediate its ends, as shown at 40, on the side plate 3. The lower end of the lever 39 is adapted to cooperate with one of the projections 19 of the looking bolt 9.
When rotation is imparted to the shaft 28 by way of the spindle 30 and the knobs 31, the arm 32, cooperating` with one of the projections 19 011 the looking bolt 9, will retract the looking bolt, against the action of the spring 20. When rotation is imparted to the shaft 28, in an opposite direction, through the instrumentality of the spindle 30, and one of the knobs 31, swinging movei ment will be imparted to the lever 39, through the instrumentality of. the link 36, the lever 39 coacting with the corresponding projection 19 of the looking bolt 9. The Construction of the device is such, obviously, that, regardless of the direction in which the spindle 30 is rotated, the looking bolt may be retracted at the will of an operator.
After the looking bolt 9 has been advanced, as shown in Figure l, rotation may be imparted to the shatt 22, by a key or the like, applied to one of the ends 24 of the shaft 22. When the shaft 22 is rotated, the latch 25 may be swung downwardly int'o the position shown in Fgure l, the latoh cooperating with the corresponding shoulder' 16 to prevent retraction of the looking bolt. Then it is desired to dispose the latch 25 in an noperative position, as shown in dotted line in Figure 1, the latch may be swung upvvardiy and rearwardly, against the stop 27, through the instrumentality of the shaft 22, the spring 21 cooperating with the cam or projection 26, to hold the latch in the dotted line position ot Figure 1. i

In a device of the class described, a. casing; a bolt inounted tor sliding movement in the casing` and provided on its opposite sides with projections; spring means for advancing the bolt; a shat't journaled in the casing; an arm carried by the sha'ft and cooperating With the projection on one side of the bolt to retract the bolt when the shaft is rotated in one direction; a level' fulcrumed intermediate its ends on the-casing, between the shatt and the bolt, and cooperating at one end with the projection on the other side of the bolt to ret'act the bolt When the shaft is rotated in an opposite direction; and a link forning a connection between the arm and the other end of the lever and disposed, in approximate parallel ism to the bolt, between the shaft and the fulcrun of the lever.
