No.147,274. PatemedFeb-1o-1a74.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE.
FREDERICK A. LANE, or` swANzEv, AssreNoE To i EnvisELE, EPEEATM KENDALL, OF KEENE, NEW HAMPSHIRE, AND ADNA E. KENDALL, OF
CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.
Specificatonforming part of Letters Patent No. 147,274, dated February 10, 1874; application filed December 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. LANE, of Swanzey, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a certain new and Improved Gase or Package for Butter, of which the following is a complete description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification.
This invention is a package for butter, and the object thereof is the preservation of butter during transportation and storage, by .packing it in sealed air-tight cans or metal boxes, the inside of the boxes being coated with shellac, or other innocuous material, to prevent the metal from becoming acted upon by the salt or other constituents of the butter, and thereby injure its Vvflavor. The package is made airtight by a gasket inserted under the rim of the cover, which is made daring immediately at its edge for the admission of the gasket.
Of the above speciiied invention, the following is a more full and complete description.
A in the drawing represents the package or case referred to, and which is made of sheettin or other metal. Said package has a holding capacity of one pound, which, however, may be more or less, if so desired. B, is a shoulder struck up around the case or package, immediately below the rim of the cover O, over which it partially its, as shown in Fig. l. The rim of the cover is made slightly flaring, as shown at c in Fig. 3, for the purpose of passing down over the ring or gasket D, whereby the tting of the cover is made airtight. The bottom of the package, for table use, may be struck up, forming a radial corrugated mold, E, Fig. 4., or other design.
As above said, the inside of the package is coated with a varnish of shellac, which, by its harmless character, in no way affects the taste of the butter, whereas, at the same time, it protects the tin from the 4corroding action of the salt, or other elements that the butter may contain, and, therefore, no unpleasant taste is communicated to the butter by the tin, which would be the result if not protected by the shellac coating.
The package is intended to hold more or less butter, which, when put therein, is lthen secured in an air-tight manner by the cover. For this purpose, a cord or gasket, D, saturated with shellac or other suitable material, is placed on the package, as shown in Fig. 2, above the shoulder B, which prevents the gasket from falling down over the package. The cover is now put on, which, in consequence of its flaring rim C, will pass over the gasket on pressing the cover down, thereby compressing the gasket between the side of the package and the rim of the cover, making a cemented air-tight joint. On removing the butter from small packages, and which is done by inverting them, the impression of the mold E will be left on the cakes of butter, thereby having the cakes of butter lin good shape and condition for being set upon the table.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described butter-package, consisting of the case A, shoulder B, cover G, having a flaring rim, c, gasket D,'an.d struck-up bottom, forming a mold, E, substantially in the manner as set forth, and for the purpose speciiied.
