l. LEIKER SLOT CLOSURE FOR FORD AUTOMOBILES Oct. 30 ,"1923.

ISADORE LEIKER,
SLOT CLOSURE FOR T Application filed February T all to 710m it may 0092067 Be it known that I, Isimoan Lnnrnn, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Hays, in theooun'ty of Ellis and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Slot Closures for Ford Automobiles, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to slot closures for Ford automobiles, and its object is to provide a means to prevent a cold draught in the winter time and shut off the hot air from the engine in the sunnner time.
The invention comprises a set of slide members each with a slotted. guard plate individual thereto through which the brake lever slide or guard plate, the clutch lever slide or guard plate, and the reverse lever slide or guard plate pass and control.
The construction is such that the guards may be removed at any time or applied at.
any time to eflectivelypro-tect theoperator .from the hot air or from the draught to which the operator is subjected.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, with the understanding that the invention is not confinedto any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings, but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features oi the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through one of the control lever protecting platesbut omitting the other control levers from consideration.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the guard plate for the control lever illustrated.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the associated stationary guard. plate-s directly controlled by and movable with the foot lever.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown in Fig. 2, the drivers compartment A of a Ford automobile and showing but one of the control foot levers 1 of the complete equipment, the other levers being omitted as substantial duplicates of the particular lever illustrated and hence not necessary to show, it being understood that in practice two other foot levers are assumed to be present,

the three levers making up thecomplement of three toot levers usually present inthe F 0rd automobile for controlling the high speed and the low speed clutch, the reverse control and the brake control but it is considered unnecessary to show all three of the lovers as in generaltheir structure is similar. l i
To accommodate the three levers,-there are provided threelongitudinal slots 2 to pass the several foot levers constituting the control of the automobile, although but one of these foot levers, namely the foot lever lis illustrated in the drawings, because the other two levers are effectively duplicates of the one shown. a 1
Each foot lever l is mounted on aishaft 3 below the slanting fioorboard 4 which passes all three of the foot levers, and each foot lever terminates at the upper end above the floorboard or deck 4 in a foot pedal 5 common to the Ford automobile.
On the upper face of the deck 4 and secured thereto by bolts. 6, or other suitable fastening devices, is a fixed plate 7 having a central longitudinal entering slot 17 and longitudinal side slots 9 to accommodate-the fastening bolts 6 for the adjustment or 10?- ca'ting of the plates 7. i i y The toot lever 1 extends normally at a rising inclination ,through the slot 2 and .above the top of the deck land traverses it, and this lever 1 rises through and is secured to a guard yoke 8 embracing the lever .1 above the slot. 2, the guard yoke 8 being secured to the. lever by means of a clip 8 extending through a slot 10 in the yoke S embracing the lever 1 and made fast thereto by a bolt 11 extending about the rear of the lever 5 so that the shield 8 will participate in movements. of the lever under the control of the foot of the operator.
The guard yoke 8 has a pivot connection 12 with one end of the guard plate 13, while the other end of the guard plate 13 is formed with a downturned extension or flange 14: to slide along the under face of the deck 4 without interference therewith.
The guard yoke 8 is connected by an extension spring 15 with an intermediate hook or connection 16 on the guard plate 13 and tending to hold the foot lever 1 in a relatively elevated position.
When pressure is exerted by the foot of the operator upon the pedal 5, the plate 13 entering slot 17 at the end of the plate 7 remote from the slot 17 thus extending the spring 15 and permitting the movement of the plate 7 below the lower edge of the deck 4, the guard yoke 8 and spring 15 moving below the deck 4, still effectively closing the slot in the plate 7 against any material passage of air, hot or cold, through the plate 13. In assembling the structure with respect to the deck of the Ford automobile, the plate 7 is located above the deck and made 'fast thereto by the bolt 6 or other suitable means with a plate 18 located below the deck 4 and constituting a thick closure for the bottom portion of the deck. I
The plate 13 is located below the deck 4 and underneath the slots 9 and 17 and permitting the raising and dropping of' the plate 13 together with the lever 1, this structure being duplicated with respect to each of'the other foot levers.
Ordinarily, the plate 13 is in the raised condition with the flanged end 14 against and slidable along the under side of the face of the deck 4 while the other or rear edge of the plate 13, this being the hinged end 12, rises and falls with respect to the under face of the deck under the pressure of the foot of the operator in working the control lovers of the automobile, the guard yoke 8 participating in this movement, each control lever causing the operation of the part participating in the movement of the respective control lever through the shaft 3. With the part assembled, the slots through the deck 4; are only temporarily open, and the effects of draught therethrough are but temporarily felt and not sufficiently to chill the operator in winter time or to expose the operator to the effects of the hot draught coming from the engine in the summer time.
What is claimed is 1. A closure for the pedal slot in the control mechanism of a Ford automobile, comprising a plate fixed to the upper face of the deck of the automobile, and another plate slidable along the under face of said deck and hinged to a control pedal to move therewith and participate in the approach and recession of the pedal with respect to said deck.
2. A closure for the pedal slots of the control-lever-mechanism of a Ford automobile, comprising a longitudinally slotted plate with fastening means for adjustably fixing it to the upper face of the deck of the automobile, and another plate provided with a sliding connection to said deck and having a hinged member for attachment to a pedal lever of the control mechanism, whereby the pedal has a hinged connection participating in the movements of the pedal to and from the deck and serving as a means for preventing draught opening through said deck.
3. In a draught closure for the control lever system of a Ford automobile, a plate for the deck of the automobile fixed thereto. and another plate movable bodily toward and from the under face of the deck and having a hinge connection with one of the control pedals to move therewith.
4. In a draught closure for the control lever systems of a Ford automobile, a deck ISADORE LEIKER.
