VEHICLE SIGN.
Application filed MarchfiO, 1923. Serial No. 628,758.
vented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle Signs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in signs, primarily adapted for attachment to motor vehicles, and preferably to the water filling nozzle of the usual radiator of the vehicle.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of such a sign. wherein the resident town of the owner of the vehicle may be displayed in a novel manner, and further, wherein when this sign is attached to the vehicle, it will be impossible for the same to be removed therefrom.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of such an article that is comparatively simple of construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and useful of purpose.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view, partly in cross section of a sign constructed in accordance with the present invention and being shown as in position upon the usual filling nozzle of a motor vehicle radiator.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof, the sign casing being partly broken away for more clearly disclosing the illuminating means therein.
Figure 3 is a transverse cross sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, looking downwardly in the direction of the arrows, and
Figure 4- is an enlarged fragmentary cross-sectional View of a portion of the device.
With particular reference to the drawings, there is disclosed a portion of the usual motor vehicle radiator A, provided with a vertical filling nozzle B, which is internally screw threaded as shown in Figures 1 and 4.
Adapted for screw threaded engagement within the screw threaded filling nozzle B of the radiator A, is an externally screw threaded sleeve member 5, the upper ends of the screw threads on this sleeve terminatin at a oint saced from the liner end thereof. At diametrically opposite points upon the upper end of the sleeve 5, there is formed laterally projecting lugs 6, having disposed within a suitable opening therein, a spring pressed pin or plunger 7. Positioned over the upper half of the sleeve 6, is an annular shaped cap 8, the interior of which is provided with a central annular shoulder 9, the upper surface of which is racked as at 10. The lugs 6 of the sleeve engage over this shoulder 9, and the spring pressed pins 7 are adapted for engagement uponithe racked surface 10 of this shoulder 9 in a manner and for the purposes herein after described.
The upper wall of the annular cap 8 may be of hexagon shape as shown, and is provided with a screw threaded opening 11 at one side thereof, as more clearly shown in the top plan view, Figure 2, which opening is adapted for the reception of a screw threaded securing cap 12. Formed upon the side wall of the cap 8 and at diametrically opposite points thereon, are angular shaped laterally extending arms 13, these arms extending forwardly as at 14 and upwardly at 15 and thence again forwardly at 16. The extreme outer free ends of the portions 16 of these arm members have annular shaped plates or the like 17 formed thereon, which plates are adapted to be secured to the rear wall of sign casing 18, which casing may be and preferably is, of the construction shown.
As shown, this casing 18 is open at its front and secured thereto by set screws or the like 19, is a suitably shaped plate 20 having formed therein indicia 21, of celluloid or opaque glass. Upon the rear wall of the casing 18 and at points forwardly of each of the attaching plates 17 of the portions 16 of the arm members is an electric bulb 22 rearwardly of which is a desirable form of reflector 23, as before mentioned. The supporting arms formed at opposite points on th cap 8 are hollow, and positioned therein are electric wires 2% secured to the electric lamp 22 in the casing 18. These wires may extend to a source of electric cnorgy such as the usual storage battery of 5 will further be screwed into the filling nozzle B and any. reverse movement of the cap 8 will merely cause the flange 9 of the cap to ratchet over the spring pressed pins .7 for preventing any unscrewing or" the- Whenever 1t is de' sleeve from the nozzle. 7 sired to fill the radiator, the securing cap 12 may be removed.
Whil I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. In combination with the filling nozzle of a motor vehicle radiator, which nozzle is internally screw threaded, of an eXternaL ly screw threaded sleeve member adapted for screw threaded engagement with the said radiator filling nozzle, a cap loosely positioned over said sleeve member and having a suitable sign casing positioned thereon, and means between the said sleeve and cap for rotating said sleeve when the cap is rotated in a certain direction, said means being displaceable when the cap is rotated in a reverse direction.
2. In combination with the filling nozzle of a motor vehicle radiator, which filling nozzle is internally screw threaded, an externally screw threaded sleeve adapted for screw threaded engagement with the said filling nozzle, a cap loosely positioned over the upper end of said sleeve, supporting fillingnozzle when the said cap is rotated in a certain direction, said means being displaceable when the cap is rotated in a re verse direction.
3. In combination with the filling nozzle of a motor vehicle radiator, which nozzle is internally screw threaded, an externally screw'threaded sleeve member adapted for screw threaded engagement within the said filling nozzle, laterally extending lugs at diametrically opposite points upon the upper end of said sleeve, spring pressed pins carried by said lugs and normally extending downwardly therefrom, a cap loosely positioned over the upper end of said sleeve and having an internal annular shoulder thereon, the upper surface of which is racked for receiving the said spring pressed pins, whereby a rotation'of the cap in one direction will occasion a rotation of the said sleeve in a similar direction for screwing this sleeve into the nozzle, but preventing rotation of the said sleeve when the cap is screwed in a reverse direction, and a sign casing supported upon said cap.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JESSE ALLAN MORGAN.
