Be it known that we, BERNARD M, BiennoAn'r'r and Mannion M. Bnnrvorin'r'r, citizens of the United States, residingat Baltimore.
5 in the county oit' Baltimore City, yState ot lilaryland, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Dust Caps tor Valve Stems; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to maire and use the same.
This inventionrelates to new and useful improvements in dust caps t'or the valve stems of pneumatic tires.
is well known, the valve stem ot the air tube ot a tire is exteriorly threaded for the reception @t a cap that is ordinarily screwed down over the'stem until its lower edge impinges tightly against a dust washer, moisture and other foreign matter from entering the shoe by wayot the opening in f the telly through which the valve stem projects. The placing and removal ot this dust cap however, is extremely tedious and as result, the dust cap is often omitted and its well known benefits are lost.
lt is the object of the present invention to provide a structure in which the dust cap may be applied and removed by very slight manipulation, but yet will be held securely when in place.
ln the drawing:
Figure l is a view in which the ring that is carried by the telly is provided with bayonet slots to receive inwardlydirected pins on the cap, to hold the latter in position.
Figure 2 is a section on the line .Q -2 ot' 40 Figure l.
Figure 3 isl e section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2. f Y
Referring. particularly to the accompanying drawings, there is shown a metal telly 4 l0V on which is mounted, in any desired manner, a tire shoe l1, that encloses an air tube i2, having a valve stem 13 of ordinary construction, projecting through the opening 14, in the telly.
5 Secured on the telly, and surrounding the valve steml, is a metal ring 65 having the l..shaped grooves 66 in its peripheral tace, the vertical portion of each ot which extends through the upper tace ot En' the ring 65. rlfhe dust cap 67 is ot the general orcommon form, but instead of yhaving interior threads ior `pins 68, a. turning engagement stem 13, the provided with the with the threads of the valve lower end ot the cap is inwardly extending pins 68 which move downwardly through the vertical portions of the l shaped grooves 66, and thence circularly ct the ring 65, into the horizontal portions ot `the grooves, when the cap is rotated.
Secured within the inner end wall of the horizontal portion of each of the grooves 66, is the bight portion ot a substantially iol-shaped spring member 69, the legs 68 of which extend to a point ina vertical line with the inner wall of the vertical portion oit the groove. rlhe intermediate portions oit the legs 68 are outwardly bowed, as indicated at 69, tor the pin 68 of the cap.
The free ends of the legs 66 are Sulliciently separated to permit the ready en#y trance of the pin 68, when said pin is moved from the vertical portion of the groove into the horizontal portion, said pin springing the legs apart, and permitting' the pin to snap into the bowed portions 69.
lllhile the legs 68 are of suilicient strength to prevent accidental displacement of the movement of the cap in the opposite direction, will readily cause the pins to slip from the legs, and engaging against the outer wall of the vertical portion of the groove, permit the ready removal of the capa What is claimed is:
l. 7lhe combination with a wheel rim and a valve stemr ring secured on the rim and surrounding the valve stem, the ring having lshaped grooves in its peripheral tace, a cap embracing the ring, pins on the cap engaging in the grooves, and opposing resilient jaws mounted in each of said grooves for releasably receiving said pins,
2. The combination with a wheel rim and the valve stem protruding therethrough, or" a ring secured to the rim and encircling the valve stem, the ring having L-shaped grooves in its peripheral face, spring gripping jaws in each ot the grooves, a dust cap engaged over the valve stem and enclosing the said ring, and inwardly direct-ed pins on the ring enclosing end of the cap for engagement in said grooves and engagement between said spring jaws.
8. The combination with a wheel rim, ci a ring secured thereto and having lshaped projecting therethrough, of a reo p grooves in its peripheral face, a pair of spring jaws secured in the inner end Wall of the horizontal portion of each of the grooves and having the arms Jthereof oppositely bowed, intermediate their lengths, and terminating at the inner Wall of the vertical portion or" the groove, a cap enclosing the ring and having inwardly directed pins releasably engaged in the grooves and Within the bowed portions of the spring jews.
