UNITED STATES PATENT OEErCE.
JOSEPH I. DOTY, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF HIS RIGHT TO ALONZO O. BLETHEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN INNER SOLES OF BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,992, dated February 3, 1874; application filed January 2, 1874.
To au 207mm lit may Concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH I). DOTY, of Lynn, Essex county, Massachusetts, have m vented an Improvement in Inner Soles of Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 1n which- `of leather or other material, sewed or otherlwise secured to the center line of the upper surface, leavin g the outer edges loose all around and free, which are afterward to be cemented down over the stitches, pegs, nails, Sac., protecting the foot and stii'ening the sole.
In the drawings, A represents the inner sole, which can be made of leather, leather-board, pancake, or other material, and is to be secured in the shoe in thc usual manner of making boots and shoes; and B represents an extra sole or thin veneer, secured to the sole A through the center, as at a, by sewing, tacking, or other means, leaving the edges all around free and loose. Y This extra sole can be made of thin leather, canvas, felt, or other material, and when prepared for the trade and for use is folded togetherA upon the sole A, as seen at Fig. 2, ready to be secured in the shoe. After the shoe is properly sewed and the sole A sewed all around in the usual manner, the thin'sole or veneer B is cemented down with water-proof or other cement over the stitches, pegs, and tacks, making a smooth nish to the inside of the shoe that will not shove up, protecting the foot from the pegs and nails, and covering the stitches, as well as stift'enin g the sole, and, when Water-proof cement is used, protecting the foot from dampness.
Having fully described my invention, lwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An inner sole of a booter shoe provided with a thin veneer secured upon its upper surface, leaving the edges free to be placed down over the stitches, substantially as described.
2. A boot or shoe having an inner sole provided With a thin veneer stitched or otherwise secured to the middle portion of saidinner sole, with the edges of said veneer'cemented down. over the stitches,- nails, &c., of thc sole, substantially as set forth.
