In order to prevent jumping of the bender and to take .up any wear which may occur "a rody 96 attached to the cross head 85 extends actuating arm 88 and the proper operation of the bender insured.
The rock shaft 89 is journalled insuitable bosses 100 and 101 extending downwardly from the lower face of the bed plate and is provided at its end with anrarm 102 which is connected by a universal joint 103 to the endV of a bender actuating lever 104 which has at its opposite end a fork 105 embracing the vbender actuating cam 106.
The bender actuating cam 106 issecured to the end of a vertical shaft 107 which journalled in suitable bearings 108 and Vv10.9 in the boss 2 which forms a part of the bed of.' the machine. Anarm 110 which is sef" cured to the upper end of the shaft 107 is connected by a link 111 to an arm 112 of a shaft 113 which is axially out of alinement Vwith the shaft 107 so that the rotation of the l shaft 113 will impart a variable rotative fmovement to the shaft 107. The shaft 113 is jour-nailed in suitable bearings in webs 114 and 115 extending aerossrthe standard 3 of the sewing' machine and 1s provided at its upper end ywith a mitre gear 116 which engages a complementary mitre gear 117 upon the main shaft ofthe machine. The gear 116 desirably is twice the diameter of the gear 117 thereby causing one reciprocation .of the bender upon every second rotation of inasmuch as Vthe needle is the main shaft. reciprocated upon every rotation of Y the main shaft the bender will be elevated upon alternate reciprocations of the needle, thereby providing means for presenting 'the base 1t will be understood however, that by substituting gears of equal diameter for the gears 116and 117 the bender may be causedV to reciprocate upon each revolution of the main shaft and consequently in unison with each oscillation of the needle. Thus the machinernay be adapted for padding or for straightaway stitching or for other purposes.
It will be noted that the variable movement imparted to the shaft 107 by reason of. the linkage between the shaft 113 and Ythe shaft 107'will cause the cam l106to have a movement which will produce a longer dwell in its action upon the: fork of theV bender Vactuating lever 105 than kshould be produced by the configuration of the cam itself. Thus the bender may be. given avery rapid reciprocation with prolonged periods of dwell at the time the needle-is entering and emerging from the work and Valso when the bender is depressed and thel accomplished. j

1t is desirable that means shall be provided for varying the amplitude of recipro-` cation of the bender to enable it properly to present work of different thickness to the needle. Thexpresent invention contemplates afnovel adjusting mechanism which will permit a very Vaccurate regulation of the field o f reciprocation of thev benderV and Ywhich will be so removed from the stitch forming mechanism as not to interferewith manipulation of Vthe work.. This is accomy plished by providing means` for adjusting the fulcrum of the bender actuating lever.
In the preferred construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings the bender actuating lever 104 is provided centrally Ywith a boss 118 provided with a journal which .is mounted upon a stud 119which projects eccentrically from theend "of a supporting shaft v120 which preferably is journalled in a split bearing 121 ina bracket 122 which is secured to the under' surface of the bed plate by screws 123. A collar 124 fixed to the upper end of the shaft 120'and Y resting upon the upperend of the bearing 121 serves to support the shaft 120, and nuts leo i 125 upon the end of the extension 119 to j support thebender actuating lever 104.
The collar 124 is provided with an arm 126 which projects through a slot 127 in the side of the boss 2 and ispprovided with a handle 128by means of which it may conveniently be adjusted. An index 129 secured tothe lower face ofV the lever 126Y and passing over a dial 130 on the bed plate serves to indicate the adjustment of the shaft which forms the fulcrum for the bender actuating lever 104. rlhe index 129 may i be provided with a projection 131 adapted to engage the serrated edge 132 of a plate 133 secured to the base plate or" the machine, the engagement betweenA the projection 131 and said serrated edge 132 serving; to retain' the lever 126 in adjusted position. It will be apparent that by rotari'ly adjusting the shaft 120V in the manner above described the position of the stud 119 which forms the fulcrum of the bender actuating lever 104 may be varied, thus varying the position ofthe arm 102 of the rock shaft,Y thereby causing the bender actuating arm 88 to be raised or lowered as the case may be so that the field of reciprocation of the said hollow standard having'a cam engaging l said bender actuating lever and means for rotating said vertical shaft from said main shaft.V ,i y A A'12. In a sewing machine comprising a bed, a work support having a standard extending through said bed and a bender reciprocably mounted in said standard, means Jfor actuating said bender including an oscillating rock shaft having an arm rigid therewith, a bender engaging lever rotatably mounted on said` rock shaft, resilient means connecting said arm and said lever capable of permitting a yielding movement therebetween when the bender is subjected to pressure in excess of a predetermined amount 14. In a sewing machine comprising a bed, a work support having a standard eX- tending through said bed and Ameans for depressing said standard, a bender reciprocably mounted in said standard, means `for actuating said bender including resilient means capable of permitting said bender to yield when subjected to pressure in excess of a predetermined amount and a spring connected to said bender acting to take up wear and to maintain the bender in proper operative position.
15. In a sewing machine comprising a bed, a work support having a tubular standard extending through said bed plate, yieldable means supporting said standard and means for depressing said standard, a bender having a crosshead reciprocably mounted in said standard, means tor actuating said bender including a yieldable arm engaging said cross head, a spring mounted in said standard connected to said cross head capable of yielding under the normal action of said bender actuating means and acting to take Yup Wear and maintain the bender in proper operative position.

In a sewing machine comprising a bed, a bracket depending'therefrom and a Work support having a standard slidably mounted in said work support and bracket; a member rigidly secured to said standard, a spring on said bracket supporting said member, mea-ns for depressing said member, a guide on vvsaid Abracketengaging said member and means for adgusting said guide.

In a. sewing machine comprising a bed, a tubular standard for a Work support eX- tending through said bed, a work support having a hollow stem slidably mounted in the upper end of said standard, a bender guide in said standardfa spring seated on said bender guide yieldably supporting said Work support, a. bender reciprocably mounted in said bender guide, means for actuating said bender, and a spring in the lower end of said standard normally acting to hold said bender in engagement with said bender actuating means.

In a sewing machine comprising a bed, a tubular standard for a work support eX- tending through said bed, a work support having` a hollow stemi slidably mounted in the upper end of said standard, a bender guide in said standard, a spring seated on said bender Vguide yieldably supporting said work support, a crosshea-d in said standard connected to said bender, means including an arm for reciprocating said crosshead and a spring connected to said crosshead located in the lower portion of said standard acting normally to hold saidcrosshead in engagement with the means.
