Description

N. P; TB EAD w E L'L.
fletnrt for the Manufacture of Gas. No.146,962.
Patntd Jan. 27, 1874.
INVENTUH- WITNES s E s= mzww UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN I. TREADWELL, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN RETORTS FOR THE MANUFACTUREOF GAS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,962, dated January 27, 1874; application filed January 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN P. TREADWELL, of the city and State of New York, have invented a useful Setting of Retorts for the Manufacture of Illuminating-Gas, of which the following is a full and clear description, which will enable others to apply the same.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in gas-retorts; and it consists in connecting the two lower retorts together by means of a pipe, which is wholly outside of the bench, and which is provided with a removable cap, so that the pipe can be prevented from choking, and the quality of gas examined at any time, as will be more fully set forth hereafter.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention.
A O E represent three retorts, placed one above the other in the furnace, the upper one alone being provided with a stand-pipe, P, for conducting the gas to the reservoir. The lowest and middle retorts are connected together at or near their front ends by a pipe, B, which is placed wholly outside of the bench, and
which has its lower end fitted to the mouthpiece of the retort A by a socket-joint. The upper end of the pipe extends upward above the mouth-piece of the retort O, to which it is also connected by a socket-joint, and which is provided with a removable cap, a, so that the pipe can be prevented from choking, and the quality of gas examined at any moment. The middle and upper retorts are connected at their rear ends by means of the short pipe I), which is wholly inclosed in the furnace.
I am aware that the arrangement of the retorts-connected together by pipes, so that the gas will flow from a lower to a higher retortis not new, and I do not claim such.
Having thus described my invention, I claimlhe combination of the retorts A O E, pipe 1), stand-pipe P, and connecting-pipe B provided with the cap a, substantially as shown and described.
NATHAN P. TREADWELL.
