or open position, the wire 72, Figure 7, is advanced against the stop 78, and the wire gripping lever 51 is then advanced to engage its block 53 with the projecting end 72 of the wire and hold the same firmly against the closed mandrels 42, 43, Figures 1 and 5. The arbor 22 is advanced to place the previously formed link A, within the jawsQO, against the closed mandrels, Figure 8, when the bending tools 66, 67 are advanced to give the initial bend to the link, the former severing a link section as it passes across the inner end of the bushing 70.
While the tools 51, 66, 67, arein the position shown in Figure 8, the slides 80, 81, Figure 9, are inwardly advanced and the levers 76, 77. are tilted by the contact of their curved edges 76*, 77*, with the rolls 92, 93, to bring the link closers in position to engage the projecting ends 0, (Z, of the partially formed link and close such ends within the previously formed link A while the said slides are. moving inwardly.
As soon as a link has been closed in the manner above described, the tools 51, 66, 77, will retreat, Figures 6 and 7, and the jaw carrying arbor will retreat to disengage the jaws from the newly formed link B and make a quarter turn and also be given an upward tilt by means of the cam 94, Figure 1, and again advanced to grasp the link B, Figure 10. When the jaws are thus engaged, the lower half 43 of the mandrel will retreat. Figure 11, and the jaw carrying arbor will be given a downward tilt to strip the link B from the upper half 42 of the mandrel. When the link B has been cleared from the upper half of the mandrel, the arbor 22 will retreat with said link and reverse the previous quarter ,turn while the mandrel is closing and the tools 51, 66, 67, are again advanced into operative position for forming a new link, when the aw carrying arbor will advance to place the link, within the jaws. against the former to continue the operation of chain making.
While the machine, above described, is canable of making links of any desired length, t is particularly adapted to make very short l nks. In other words. links wherein the diameters of the wire of two interlocking links practically fill the central opening of a companion link, as shown in Figure 14. Where there is plenty of spare room in this central opening, the new link is usually closed at the center of said opening, but with short links. asshown' in Figure 14, the new link must be closed away from the center and at such a distance therefrom as will give the two interlocking links B and C the necessary freedom. It is for this purpose that the jaw carrying arbor is vertically tilted in order to carry a recently closed link from a higher plane to a lower one where the link interlocking can be done at one side of the center of a previously formed link.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A wire chain making machine comprising a two part mandrel having seats at the adjacent ends of the two parts about which the jaws and at one side of the center of said closedlink.
2. Awire chain making machine comprising an arbor, a support therefor, means for oscillating and longitudinally reciprocating said arbor in its support, means for reciprocally tilting said support, a two part mandrel, means for separating and closing the mandrel, reciprocating initial link bending tools, reciprocating link closing tools for interlocking a partially formed link within a previously formed link held by the jaws and at one side of the center of said previously formed link, said arbor retreated as said links are interlocked so as to release the jaws from the previously formed link, and partially rotate and advance to engage the jaws with the newly formed link and detach said link from the two part mandrel, and again retreat and reverse its previous partial rotation and advance the newly formed link to the closed mandrel.
3. In a chain making machine of the character described, comprising a two part mandrel, one part held stationary and the other part movable to and from the stationary part, the adjacent ends of the two parts having seats about which links are formed when the mandrel is closed, initial link bending tools, link closing tools, a jaw carrying arbor, means for actuating said arbor to detach a closed link from the stationary part of the mandrel and present it to the closed mandrel for the interlocking of a new link at one side of the previously formed link held by the jaws.
4. In a chain making machine of the char- V 'pivotally supported thereon, link closing tools mounted on the levers, and means for tilting said levers toward the mandrel.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ANDREW BERG.
