. A. Z. BOSE FLOUR SIFTER Filed April 30. 1925 F/EE Patented Sept. 18, 1923.
AUGUST Z. BOSE, OF WILLITS, CALIFORNIA.
FLOUR srrrnn.
Application filed April 30, 1923. 'Serial No. 635,488.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known, that I, AUGUST Z. Bosn, a citizen" of the United States, residing at Nillits, in the county of Mendocino and State of California, have" invented new and useful Improvements in Flour Sifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in flour sitters and resides in'the provision of a simply constructed, compact and efficient device of" this nature which is arranged such that it may be taken apart for the purpose of readily and easily cleaning the parts thereof and may be operated without throw ing the flour out of the sitter.
An object of the invention i's to provide a sitter of the character described wherein the perforated bottom is close to the lower end of the sitter body and provision is made for the sitting of a greater quantity of flour than is the case with the ordinary sitter wherein the perforated bottom is spaced well upward from the lower end of the body.
Another object is to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of flour sitters so as to render them superior to the ordinary sitter by way of simplicity and compactness of arrangement, ease of operatiomstrength and durability.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of a sitter constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the sitter.
Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section on line 38 ofFig. '1.
Referring in detail to the drawing where- 1 in one embodiment of the invention is illusformed of some light, dust-proof metal and one side is provided with the usual handle 2.1 Mounted at the lower end of the body portion is a concavo-convex screen 3, which is removably supported in the lower end of the sitter and in view of its disposition at said lower end provides for the sifterholding a greater quantity of flour than is possible in sitters having the perforated walls spaced well inwardly from the lower end. The screen 3 is provided at spaced points on its periphery with projections 4 adapted to engage in notches or slots 5 extending up wardly from the lower edge of the body portion 1. These projections .4: engage snugly in the notches and prevent turning of the screen or rattling thereof but permit of ready removal of said screen. The screen is held in place by a pair of supporting rods 6 which extend across opposite sides ofthe screen beneath the latter through openings 7 and 8 provided in the body portion 1. The rods are provided at certain ends with head portions 9 and at their otlierends are screw threaded as at 10 whereby nuts 11 may be turned on the threaded ends to hold the rods in place. The arrangement issuch that the rods will be flexed and placed under slight tension when in place in the openings 7 and 8, and engaged with the lower side of the screen whereby the screen will be securely held in place. The preferable arrangement of the rods is to extend them from slightly spaced points on one side of the body portion divergently to the other side of the body portion as shown particularly in Fig. 3, whereby an adequate supporting of the screen will be provided for. Extending upwardly from the center of the screen is a pin 12 on which the hub portion 13 of the agitator 14: is rotatably mounted. The agitator comprises a plurality of tangentially extending arms 15 curved to conform to the concavity of the screen and adapted to lie close to the upper surface of the latter.
One of the arms 15 is bent as at 16 near its outer end and extended through an arcuate slot 17 provided between the body portion and a recessed portion of the screen. After being thus extended the portion 16 is extended outwardly to serve as a handle 18 there being provided in the wall of the body portion an arcuate slot 19 through which the portion 18 extends. By grasping the handle 18 and moving it back and forth,
the agitator will be moved over the screen to cause the flour to sift in the usual manner. The agitator of my invention and the screen are so constructed and associated with one another and the body portion that in operation the flour will not be thrown out of the top of the can but will be effectively sifted through the screen.
When itis desired to clean the screen and its associated parts, it is only necessarily to withdraw the rods 6 after removal of the nuts 11, and to allow the screen to drop out of the bottom of the body portion. It will thus be seen that the assembling of the parts may be expeditiously ei'l'ected as well as the disassembling. V
By having the arcuate slots in the body portion or container 1 disposed below the plane of the screen and the slot between the screen and wall comparatively narrow, the flour is, to a great extent, prevented from passing out through the container slot during'the operation of the sitter.
I claim:
1. A flour sitter comprising a container having slots at the lower end, a screen removably mounted within the lower end of the container, a plurality of projections on the screen engaging in the slots and removable supporting members extending across the lower end of the container beneath and supporting said screen in place.
QJA. flour sitter comprising a container having slots at the lower end, a screen removably mounted within the lower end of the container, a plurality of projections on the screen engaging in the slots, removable supporting members extending across the lower end of the container beneath and supporting said screen in place and an agitator mounted within the container close to the upper side of the screen.
A flour sitter comprising a container having slots at the lower end, a screen removably mounted within the lower end of the container, a plurality of projections on movably mounted within the lower end of the container, a plurality of projections on the screen engaging in the slots, removable supporting members extending across the lower end of the container beneath and supporting said screen in place, an agitator mounted within the container close to the upper side of the screen, said container having a slot adjacent its lower end and an extcnsion from the agitator slidably engaged in said slot, said slot being below the plane of the screen.
