I have Shown and described my invention as applied to the type of canning machine Shown in my cofpending application .Serial No. 382, ses, ined May is, 1920.
Referring to the drawings, represents the Vframe or supporting structure of a canning machine. In this frame are mounted a driving shaft 11 on which is a bevel gear 12 meshing with a bevel gear 13 fixed to the lower end of a vertical shaft 14. f Ameasuring wheel 15 and a distributing wheel 16 are keyed to shaft 14. These parts aredisclosed' in my co-pending application above referred to and a description of this construction and mode of operation is not essential to an understanding of the present invention.

in operation, as thedriving shaft rotates a shoulder on the. cam-engageswithfthe roller on the bell cranklever'and'abr'uptly moves the lever inone direction; this imparts motion to the Ushaped arm at the other end of the lever, and, through lug 23 and arm 22 to the hopper plate V18 and hop per 17. As the cam rotates the spring restores the lever arm and hopper to their original position and the operation is ice-v peated. The result is a series of abrupt os-, cillations of thehopper upon the shaft 14E as an axis whichv tends to free the hopper of any material which would otherwise adhelfe thereto. The oscillatory motion should not be so extensive as to interfere vwiththe proper discharge of the materials into the without interfering with the operation of Y the other parts of the machine. This may be .71170 Y should be noted that the extent of movement of the hopper is limited bythe throw of the actuating lever.
Vhile I have described myV invention as taking a particularlform, it will be under-Y stood that the various parts of my inven tion maybechanged without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I donot limit myself tothe precise construction set forth, but consider that'I am at libertv to make such changes and alterations as 'fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new'and desire to secure byv Lettcrs'Patent lis l. Ina can filling machine, the combination of a driving member; a hopper; a rotatable plate carryingfthe hopper; connections between the driving member and the rotatable plate adapted to impart oscillatory motion to the plate, and means for engaging or disengaging said mechanism, substantially asvdescribed.

In a can filling machine, the combina# tion of a hopper; a rotatable plate ,carrying the hopper;a lever adapted to engage at one end with the rotatable plate; a rotatably Y mounted cam adapted to actuate the other end Vor the lever, Ythereby imparting oscillatory vmotion to the hopper, and means for holding Vthe lever in operative relation to the cam; substantially as described.

In a can filling machine, the combina tion of a hopper; a rotatable plate carrying the hopper; a bell cranir lever having an arm arranged to engage withthe rotatable plate; a rotatable cam adapted to actuate the other arm of the lever, thereby -imparting'oscillatory motion to the hopper, and means for holding the lever in operative relation to the cam substantially as described.

In a can filling machine, the combination of a driving member; a movably toA mounted hopper: a lever adapted to impart oscillatory motion to the hopper; a rotatably mounted cam adapted to actuate Vthe lever, .and a second Alever adapted to throw the first named lever out of or into operative engagement, substantially as described.
6. In a can filling machine, the combination'of a hopper; a rotatable plate carrying thehopper; a bell crank lever hav-V ingone arm adapted to engage with the rotatable plate; a'r'oller carried bv the other o,
