T0 all whom concern; v
Beit known that I, Grenen P.IInMsTnnnr,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hastings upon I-Iu'dso'n, f Westchester County, N. .I have `invented an Improvement in Containers, of Ywhich the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts. n A
V This invention relates to containers, more especially bottles used for pillstablets and the like, andaims to provide convenient and easily-operated means to compact the mass ofA material, and tozprevent breakage and abrasion of the tablets, which is apt to `occur if the mass isY left loose and free torattleabout within the bottle. The invention also aimsto obviate the inconvenience attending the use of a tuft of cottonusually Vemployed between the stopper and the mass of material to reduceV the air space-and to prevent injury to the contents.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings of one illustrative embodiment thereof, while its scope will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a container equipped with a device exemplifying my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionalview of the same, showing the container filled with tablets.
Referring to the drawings, and to the specific embodiment ofmyinvention which is selected for exempliiication, I have shown a container comprising a bottle 3, provided with a neck 4, having an opening 5 normally closed by a suitable closure, herein a usual stopper 6, which is fitted into the neck in the customary manner.
In Fig. 2, I have shown the bottle containing a'mass of tablets or lozenges 7, which are usuallyV more or less fragile and likely toV Vbe injured by rattling about within the bottle. As a means to compact the mass of ma-V terial, I have provided Aa follower, herein comprising a body of suitable yielding material, preferably a disc or other suitablyshaped layer of cotton 8, preferably stiened by a reinforcing member, which may conveniently consist of a disc 9 of appropriate i oonrnlnnn.
,1919.A serial no. 295,972.
material such as pasteboard disposed beneath the layer of cotton; j j
' Suitable means are provided to movethe follower toward and from the opening 5 in the neck of the'bottle, andfor this purpose, I have herein provided a flexible member, preferably comprising a cord lO'having one end secured` to the follower, as by being passed therethrough, and provided with a knot il therebeneath, said cordv extending from thel follower in an upward Vdirection to the exterior ofthe bottle, preferably by providing the stopper 6 with an axial hole l2, through which' the cord extends. If desired, the outer end of the cord may be pro# vided with an enlargement, such as a knot or'ball 13 attached` thereto. That part of the cord which is outsidethe bottle may be suitably secured in the desiredposition of adjustment, as by wrapping the same about the stopper 6, as clearly shown in the drawings.
When 4the container is in use and it is desired to remove some of its contents, the stopper is first removed, it being' understood that the latter will slide along the cord toward the outer end of the latter. The cord is then pulled in an upward direction, thus raising the contents to the under side of the neck, whereupon the desired amount can be shaken out of the bottle. The stopper is thenrestored to its proper position, and 'the cord is again pulled in an upward direction, to cause the mass tobe compacted. r`finally, the end of the cord is wrapped about the cork and suitably fastened, as by tying the same. Thus the contents of the bottle are always kept in a minimum air space, and cannot be broken or abraded, no matter how much of the contents may be removed.
IIaving thus described one embodiment of my invention, but without limiting myself thereto, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
l. The combination with a container and a closure therefor provided with an opening, of a follower, and follower operating means extending through said opening and operable from the exterior of said container to compact solid matter between said follower and said closure when said closure is applied thereto.
2. The combination with a container and a closure therefor, of a follower, and fol lower operating means having one end attachedfto said-followerand' the other end attached lto-said closure .to maintain disposed externally :of said container and said follower at the desired height.V

7g. The Ycombi-nation with a container and a closure therefor, ofv affollower, and fol-V lower-operating means' comprising a fieriw ible member attached tofsai l follower, extending through" said closure and wrapped about aportion ofthe latter.-
a closure therefor, of a vfollower compris- Ving a `body of oompressible material, and
means for moving said follower toward and from said closure;
9. The combination withV a Container and a closure therefor, of a" follower compris ing a body of yielding.material, reinforo`V ng-meansfor said follower, and meansrfor moving'sald' follower toward and fromsaid closure.

il.V The Combination with a containerV and a Closure therefor of yielding means oarried by said closure `for eompactingthe ma` terial within Vsaid container.
In testimony whereof, I have Ysigned my name `to `this specification.
