Be it known that I, ISAAC H. CARR, a citie zen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the countyof Hamilton and a State of 'Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Gas-Shut-Off Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention re ates to safety means in no the use of combustible gases.
lVhere the ordinary types of valves are used serious accidents are caused .by the supply of gas being temporarily interrupted and thereby extinguishing the flame so that when the supply is resumed the gas is not consumed but pervades the building in which the device is located, forming a dangerous explosive mixture with the air and also subjecting persons in the building some asphyxiation especially where natural gas is used, as it has practically no perieptible odor whereby its presence is detected.
The objects of my invention are to pro- 25 vide a simple, efiicient and durable means for automatica ly shutting on the flow of gas or fluid under pressure when pressure is reduced below normal or no longer exists thereby providing safety means to prevent explosion, suffocation or asphyxiation due to the temporary stoppage in the flow of gas which extlnguishes the flame so that when pressure .1s resumed the gas is prevented from escaping into the rooms where as it would cause probable dangerous results.

In the. embodiment of. my inventionas illustrated and which shows a preferred construction I provide a safety valve body 1 having an integrally formed inlet connection 2 and an integrally formed outlet councction 3. The valve body is provided in its top with aveircular space 4L, and extend ing downwardly therefrom I provide a cylindrical valve chamber 5 having grooved passages 6 in its wall extending from space 4 downwardly in valvechamber 5. Immediately below said valve chamber is formed threaded opening 7 in which a threaded cylindrical bearing 8, having central vertical opening 9, is screwed. Immediately below said bearing is a secondary cylindrical valve chamber '10 and below said valve chamber is a cylindrical outlet 11 of less diameter than said valve chamber whereby a sharp or angular circularvalve seat 12 is formed. ;A gas passage 13 extends from space 4 downwardly into the secondary valve chamber near its top. By-pass 14.: extends from said passageto gas outlet 3 and is provided witlr valve 15. The upper end of safety valve body 1 is externally screw threaded to receive-screw threaded cap 16 on rubber gasket "17' to securely close the same. Inlet connection 2 is provided withtapered opening 29 extending' transversely therethrough to receive spigot 0r valve plug 30 havmg gas passages 31 and 32 extending transversely therethrough in different directions. Said spigot is provided with operating handle 83 and in position by nut 35 tion. It is secured upon its threaded end, said nut bearing upon interposed lock washer 36.

In'an automatic gas shut-off valve having a primary valve chamber and a secondary valve chamber with a passage leading from said primary valve chamber to said secondary valve chamber, a primary valve in said primary valve chamber, a secondary valve in said secondary valve chamber, a threaded stem to which said primary valve is attached and extending through said primary valve and tapered nuts secured above and below said primary valve whereby said valve is adapted to be adjusted therein rela tive to said secondary valve and whereby said primary valve is adapted to be tiltably mounted thereon to permit it to move freely in said primary valve chamber without binding 8.
