SAFETY ARRANGEMENT FOR LAUNGHI'L G LIFEBOATS FROM VESSELS.
Application filed April 5, 1921. Serial No. 458,644.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAUL TILHELM Sinn- RIN, a subject of Sweden, and residing at Gottenborg. in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented, certain new and useful 11nprovements in Safety Arrangements for Launching Lifeboats from Vessels, of
a specification.
My invention relates to safety arrangements for launching life boats from vessels and has for its object to provide a boat lowering device of this character capable of being operated by one man. I
The present "invention refers to arrangements by means of which the above desired purpose can be carried out,and it is illustrated by the accompanyingdrawing where Fig. 1 shows a partof a vessel from the side with the arrangement in question. Fig. 2 shows the same seen from the end, Fig, 3 a safety brake device employed in the arrangement shown, on a large scale, and seen from the side, Fig. 4t the same safety brake arrangement or device in a plan view.
1 is a lifeboat, suspended from davits of a known type and hanging outside the side of the vessel,2 and 3 are lines which support the ends of the boat and are led to suitable line drums separated from each other and which are arranged in some suitable place on'board.
The line-drums are provided-with selflocking, automatically acting brake arrangements which are manoeuvred by means of hand spikes or levers or other arrangeinents which can be substituted for them.
From these handspikes or levers 7 and 8 lines or chains 10, 11 are led by means of suitable guide arrangements 12 and 13, placed either on the davits or elsewhere and from there, by a suitable line-length,
'within the reach of the person or per.-
sons who are in the said boat during the lowering process which can be carried out by pulling both of the said lines, as the pulling, namely, releases both of the automatically acting brake arrangements. A single person in the boat can, consequently, by means of arrangements according to the present invention carry out and regulate the lowering of the boat entirely by himself. The releasing of the boat from' i the suspending lines is then carried out in the known manner.
ment takes place. ished in that end of the brake-band which "form of construction, there acts a weight 20. On the said arm there is fastened a block 21 through which runs a line or chain 22 which is afterwards wound on a. part 25 which is connected with the drum 14 and takes part in its rotation when this move The tension is diminis fastened at 18 when a pull is applied to the line which is wound round the part 25 of the drum 14, there arises, after a sufliciently powerful pulling of the line 22 such a condition of things that the retarding action of the brake-band is overcome allowing'the drum 14.- to rotate, in which process the part 25 also rotates and the line 22 is unwound. In consequence of this, the lifting power on the block 21 is also diminished, while the weight 20 increases the tension of the brake-band.
With the arrangement described above, any fast descent of the load which hangs on the line on the drum 14 is prevented, and the drum'can only unwind its line at the same speed'as that with which. by means of pulling, the line 22- is unwound from its ro- Eating part 25.
What I claim is:
1. A lifeboat launching apparatus, including davits from which a lifeboat is suspended, a line from each davit to the said lifeboat, a line drum for each line whereby rotation of the drums will cause the said lines to change the elevation of the lifeboat, brake means for normally holding the said drums against rotation, and brake controlling means carried by the said drums and including auxiliary lines adapt ed to cooperate with the said brake means to permit rotation of the drums at a speed corresponding to that at which the auxiliary lines are unwound from the drums.
2. A lifeboat launching apparatus, as claimed in claim 1, in which each of the said drums is provided with two line receiving channels and a brake surface, one channel being adapted to receive the line to the lifeboat and the other channel to receive and 4: there is shown a safety the auxiliary line of the brake controlling means, the brake means comprising a brake band embracing said brake surface and a WGlghtGCl lever pivoted at one end of the band and attachably receiving the other end thereof above the pivot, a block carried by the lever between the attached end of the drawn from the channel the brake lever is lifted to release the said line drum and the 1 speed of rotation of the line drum to lower the lifeboat. is determined by the rate of speed at which the second line is unwound from its channel." I
Intestimony whereof, lhave signed my name to this'specifieation in the presence of two subscribing; Witnesses.
