WILLIM R, HALLIWELL, F EBOVIDENCE, REODE'ISLAND, ASSIGNOB T0 ATLANTIC TUBING COMPANY, 0E PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
AUTOMOBILE-HOOD-LATCHING DEVICE.
Application aiea June as, was. Serial no. mace.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. HALLF K wean, a citizen of the United States, residmg atProvidence, in the countyof Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automobile Hood-Latching Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in automobile hood latching devices, and the primary object thereof, is to provide means for holding the usual or customary latch against vibratin to thereby avoid rattling ofthe latch and thus eliminate the objectionable noises due to the latch movements.
A further object of the invention is to provide means. in the form of an attachment which can be easily and quickly applied to the hood without in any way afi'ecting or disturbing the latch and its associated parts.
The invention further aims to. rovide an attachment which is of simple an economical construction and which can be secured in lace by a single fastener.
urther and other objects will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description. In the drawings Figure 1, is a side elevation of the inven-- tlon.
Figure 2, is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3, is a front elevation of the attachment per se. 1
lln proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a molded block 1, of rubber is employed, which has a face 2 formed flat 4&0 to firmly engage against the side 3 of the automobile hood and a bottom end 4 which seats on the horizontal sill 5 of the automobile bod which sill occurs at the side of the hoo The up er end 6 of the rubber body 1, engages wit and beneath the keeper K of the hood latch L so as to be held'in position by the keeper. The outer face 7 of therubber body inclines upwardly and outwardly and is formed with a central lon t0 tudinally extending and approximately shaped groove 8 which latter receives the shank 9 of the body of'the latch in wedging engagement therein. The hinging member 10 of the latch is likewise received in a the groove 8 so that the rubber block or body 1, is held by and between the keeper and hinge member 10.
The body 1 is formed with a transverse aperture 11 receiving a fastener, such as a bolt 12 therein, the fastener extending through the hood side as shown.
To apply the attachment, it is merely necessary to position the body with the member 10 received in the groove 8 and the end 6 engaged with the keeper K following which the fastener is secured in place. N
It will now be seen that the attachment moves with the hood side in opening and closing of the same and that since the end 6 is impinged against the base of the keeper to K, and held by the fastener, the attachment is rigidly afiixed in osition. The V- roove 8 is of such formation that the shan 7 of the latch is caused to have wedging engagement with the walls defining the groove, consequently the. latch is held firmly and against rattling.
The invention can be applied to varying types or makes of automobiles by merely varying'the shape of the latch engaging, ace of the rubber block, if found necessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is e .1. Anattachment for automobile hoods to prevent rattling of the hood latch, including a block of rubber having a rear face to engage against the side of .thehood, a bottom face to seat on the sill, an upper face to engage ,*against the keeper of the latch, and an inclined front face having a ti-shaped vertical groove to wedgingly receive the shank of the latch, the hingmg mountin of the latch being received in the base of t e groove and means to secure the t5 rubber block to the hood.
2. An attachment for automobile hoods to prevent rattling of the hood latch, including a block of rubber having a V-shaped groove to wedgingly receive the shank of the latch and means to secure the block to the hood.
3. An attachment for automobile hoods to prevent rattlin of the hood latch, including a 'block of rub r having a rear face to engage against the side of the hood, a. bottom face to seat on the sill and to engage the hinging mounting of the latch, an upper llOO ' face to engage with the keeper of the latch, and a front face to engage the shank of the latch throughout the major portion of the 1130 length of the shank, and means to fixedly secure the block to the hood.
4. An attachment for automobile hoods to prevent rattling of the hood latch, including a block of rubber of a size and shape to be received in the space between the shank of the latch and the adjacent part of the side of the hood, said block havmg a front face formed to be engaged by the latch shank and being of a length equalling that of the major portion of the length of the shank, and means to fixedly secure the block to the hood.
5. An attachment for automobile hoods to prevent rattling of the hood latch, including a block of rubber having a bottom seated on the sill and a front face engaged with the hinging mounting of the latch said front face of the block engaging the shank of the latch, and means to fixedly secure the block to the side of the hood.
6. An attachment for automobile hoods to prevent rattling of the hood latch, including a block of rubber of a size and shape to conformably fit in the space between the shank of the latch and the adjacent part of the side of the hood, and means to fixedly secure the block in position so that upon movement of the latch to latching position, the shank of the latch will engage against the block.
7. An attachment for automobile hoods to prevent rattling of the hood latch, including a block of rubber fitted in the space between the adjacent part of the hood and the shank of the latch, and means to secure the block in fixed position, said block being of such length and form so as to engage a considerable part of the length of the shank of the latch so as to firmly support the latter.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM R. HALLIWELL.
