Be it known that I, DANIEL JAMES MC- ()MrsH, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of the city of Noithcote, a suburb of the city of Melbourne,in the county of Bourke, State of Victoria, lCommonWealth of Australia, whose post otlice address is S Smith Street, Thornbury, in the said city of Northeote, have invented certain new and useful improvements in and connected with Improvements in Infants Soothing Teats, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to infants soothing teats of the kind comprising an elastic bulb or nipple, a screw threaded connecting pin which fits into one end of the teat, a cap or mount which screws onto said pin and the usual shield which is positioned betweenthe mount and the nipple. ln soothing teats of the above type as at present constructed the parte are liable, to become disconnected thus incurring danger of the shield being detached and the nipple and other parts thus swallowed by the infant. Furthermore, the bulb or nipple is completely scaled by the connecting pin thus forming an air tight or pneumatic chamber within the bulb. This renders the teat objectionable owing to its comparative hardness and liability to derangement in the event of a faulty joint be-A tween the bulb and connecting pin and consequent collapse of the teat owing to outward leakage oi air when the bulb is con'ipressed and no corresponding air admission when the pressure is relaxed.

The primary object ot the present invention is to provide in a soothcr o'l' the above type. means whereby it is practically impos sible for the shield to become accidentally detached f rom the nipple, and whereby the interior of the elastic teat or bulb is in permanent and tree communication with the atmospl'iere through air passages formed in th@ threaded connecting pin and in the cap or mount which screws on to said pin. By this means the article is rendered safer and more eilcient and attractive to the infant, and less liable to derangement. The invention also enables the various parts to be readily disconnected and re-assembled when desired for cleansing or other purposes thus rendering it perfectly hygienic.

,As seen in the drawings the numeral 2 indicates the rubber bulb or nipple which constitutes the teat proper and is preferably formed as in Figure l with an enlarged or swollen neck 3 and an external head 'l around its inner or open end.

ln combination with said bulb a connerting pin as seen in Figure 2 is employed. This pin is preferabl)Y constructei'l ot' bone, ivory or like material and is provided at one end with an externally threaded stem 6 and at its other end with an enlarged eiroular head 'i'. Between the threaded portion 6 and the head 7 is an intermediate plain circular portion or neck S ot" slightly larger diameter than said threaded portion.

ln accordance with the invention a longitudinal air passage 9 is torined through the connecting pin from end to end thereof and this passage communicates with the interior ot the bulb 2 when-the parts are assembled as in Figure 7, the head 7 `forming a tight fit in the neck 3 Whilst the beaded end 4 of' the bulb encireles the neck 9 ot the connect ing pin as shown,

The usual shield ll fits around the end 0f the bulb between the bead 4 and head 7 and surrounding the neck 8 as in Figure 7. The shield is thus securely held in position and if desired the central hole through the shield may be grooved 0r serrated to increase the grip on the rubber nipple.

The cap or nionnt l2, is also preferably made oi boner` ivory or the like and is provided with a threaded central hole 13 which receives the threaded ortion 6 of the conneetinar pin. In accordance with the invention this hole 13 also constitutes an air passage whieh communicates with one or more radial air passages i4 extending to the snrlat'e ot the cap. The radial air passages may also serve to accommodate the usual cord for attaching the article to the infant.

It will be Seen from the foregoing that when the parts are assembled as in Figure T they are retained securely together by the eonnectinay pin the shield ll being so held that even in the event of the rap lf2 becoming nnserewed it is practically impossible for the shield to be accidentally disyilaeed. Thus the danger of the nipple or other parte passing down the infants throat is climi nated. At the same time the interior o1* the bulb 2 is in permanent Communication with the atmosphere by way of the passages 9, 13 and 14. The teat- Will thus always return to its normal shape after Compression and the article is rendered more flexible and soothing to the infant than the air tight or.' pneumatic teats of somewhat similar construction at present in use.

To dismantle the parts Jfor cleansing it is merely necessary to unseren the eap l2 whereon the Shield may be drawn forcibly over the bead 4 and the connect-ing pin may be withdrawn from the rubber nipple.

I'layinze,` now described my invention what I elaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An infants soothing' teat, comprising a nipple having' an open end, an enlarged neeh adjacent said end and an external bead at said end7 a4 connecting pin harinar an enlarged head adapted to lit tightly Within said neck, a cylindrical portion extendingr from said head and terminating beyond the beaded end of the nipple and a reduced threaded end extending: from the cylindrial portion, a shield formed with a central opening fitting over the pin and the end of the nipple between the bead and the enlarged neck of the nipple, and confining' the nipple adjacent the bead to the cylindrical portion of the pin, whereby the nipple is positively retained on the pin by the shield, and a cap adapted for threaded engagement. with the threaded end of the pin.
