To all whom t mary concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Transfer Binder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip` tion of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the niimerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a loose leaf transfer binder of the type especially adapted for shipping receipts or the like.
It is an object of this invention to provide simple, economical and easily operable locking means for firmly securing the upper cover on the device in any adjustable position.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a pair of spring-pressed levers which cooperate with the impaling posts Ito lock the binder in any adjusted position.
With these and other objects in view which will become more apparent. in the following description and disclosure, this invention comprises the novel mechanismy and combination hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views:

having a base orbottom clamping member l lapreferably made of metaland provided with appropriately spaced screw-threaded sockets in which the cylindrical impaling posts 2 are secured. In order that these posts may be properly screwed into the base, their upper ends are provided with flatsurfaces formed by cutting grooves at dianietrically opposite points whereby a tool may be readily applied. An upper clamping member 3, preferably of metal and; proyided with spaced slots for .receiving the impaling posts, cooperates with the bottom clamping member to clamp the leaves therebetween. Suitable covers 3a, preferably Aof the rigid cardboard type and sheathed in fabric, are hinged to the clamping members preferably by continuing the fabrics rearwardly and'sheathing the clamping members therewith as is well known in the art.
In the use of this binder, the upper cover and clamping member are removed and the` leaves iinpaled upon the posts 2. Thereafter the upper cover andv clamping member are replaced., pressed upon the levers, and clamped to the impaliiig posts. As loose sheets are constantly being thuswise added and removed from the binder, it is desirable that the upper cover locking means should be readily and quickly operable and should be of such a durable character as to with.- stand the constant and severe usage to which a binder of this type is frequently put. In accordance with my invention, I have provided a pair of locking levers 4, preferably of metal, having rounded notches 5 in their outer ends which cooperate with the impaling posts 2, the levers being extended at one side of the notches to provide finger gripping portions 6 which are bent upwardly to a slight degree whereby the same may be readily grasped by the fingers for raising the levers from theirlocking engagement with the inipaling posts.
TheA inner ends of the levers are provided with integral hinge members which consist of tongues 7 provided with aligned lateral lugs S which extend to the rear ends of the tongues 7 thuswise providing T-shaped lugs which are adapted to fit in the T-shaped slots 9 formed in the ends of an anchor plate 10. The entrance notches of these slots are designed to accommodate the tongues 7. The anchor plate 10 is secured upon the upper clamping member midway between the impaling posts so that when the levers 'are in vtheir operative clamping positions, the lugs 8 will, lie in the T-shaped slots and in contact with the upper surface of the clamping member 3, the tongues 7 lying in the entrance slots. A spring plate 1l vhaving notches l2 in its ends designed to accommodate the tongues 7 and of a size equal to the anchor plate 10 is super-imposed upon the l"anchorplate 10; The twoiplates l() and 11 are secured preferably by rivets along the n transverse center line to the clamping member 3, allowing the upper plate to flex.
'With reference to Figures 3 and 4, it will -be noted that the tongues 7 slope upwardly from the lugs 8 to a slight degree and that' the levers 4 slope downwardly to a slight degree from the tongues 7 to the gripping notches bringing thereby the upper surfaces "of thelevers and the spring plate into better alignment and improving the a'p'peai'-,v

It will accordingly be apparentvthat I have invented an eiiioient binder locking mechanism that is simple, durable, easy to operate, and which is retained in vits inopl erative Position'by spring pressure, so that the upper cover can bereadily adjusted to tightly clamp the loose sheets wit-hout anyl interference of the lockingmec'hanism. In other words, the locking levers 4` are held Ein inoperative position until itis desired to finally lock the upper covery in adjusted position. n

may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention and l therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
l claim as my invention:
l. ln a loose leaf binder having a lower clamping member' and a pair of impaling posts thereon, an upper clamping member 7 5 on, a pair of levers having lugs at their inner ends fitting in the slots of said anchor plate, and notches upon ltheir outer ends adapted for receiving said impaling posts, and a spring plate superimposed upon said anchor plate.
2. ln a loose leaf binder having `a lower clamping member with a plurality of impaling' posts thereon, an Aupper clamping member having apertures for receiving said impaling posts, a pair of levers cooperating with'said impaling posts to lock the upper clamping-'member to said posts, an anchor plate to which the rear ends of said levers are anchored, and a spring plate resting upon said levers and co-operating therewith for holding said levers in operative or inoperative posit-ion.
3. ln a loose leaf binder having a lower clamping member provided with al plurality of impaling posts thereon, an upper clamping member a plurality of levers frictionally pressing against said posts, and means comprising a resilient member for pivotally anchoring said levers to said upper clamping member. p
