TATES NOAII II. LINDLEY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-ELEVATORS.
Speiilication forming part cf Letters Patent No. 146,694., dated January 20, 1ST/1; applica-ion tiled December 13, 1ers.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, N oAn H. LINDLEY, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in VVater-Elevators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, in which-` Figure l is a plan View of my improved Vwater-elevator and a detached plan view of inner surface of the spout with the bucket;
and in the combination of the several elements composing my elevator, substantially t p as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
, In the accompanying drawing, A refers to an inclosure for surrounding and protecting the mouth of the well, and to the inner surface of the sides of which is fastened a joist or partition, a, upon which and the said inclosure are suitably journaled the periphericallygrooved shafts or drums B B. The inner ends of these shafts are provided with cogs b b, gearing with each other, and through which the said shafts are simultaneously put in motion when either one of the handles orcranks Upon the shaft B are formed two ratchets-a right and a left hand onewith which engage the pawls D D', operated or thrown in and out of gear therewith alternately by means of a slide, E, adjusted upon the inclosure A by staples or otherwise, and having elongated slots e e', up through which the handles of the pawls pass. The shafts or drums B B are arranged out of line with each other, toconform to the shape of the crankbar, and, as a consequence of which, the gearing used in uniting them is simplified as compared to that usually employed for `that pur! pose. G is the crank-shaped tipping-bar, rigidly fastened to the inside of the-inclosure A in any known way, and, in practice, about -siX inches below and in a line with the shafts or drums B B. The placing of the said bar and the latter in such close proximity `insures the removal of the twist and swing incidental to the straps of the buckets, and, consequently, the proper discharge of the water from the latter. This closeness of approach between the said parts is produced by bringing the respective cranks of the bar G in contact with the bails of the buckets, when the latter have been elevated, and by forming spouts upon the said buckets, which spouts are caused to strike against and under the bar C as they are being elevated, and thus tip them, when their contents will be discharged under the said bar, and consequently not have to be elevated above the latter, in which case a greater amount of space would have to be provided between said shafts and bar, asin the ordinary water-elevators of this class, and which presents the disadvantages above stated as being overcome by my invention. C refers to a bucket, of which two are used in my elevator, and which is provided with a spout, o, to enable the water, as it is being discharged, to be conducted from the bucket, as it were, to a trough suitably located and combined `with the inclosure A. At the points of conjunction of the inner surface of the spouts with the buckets are notches or recesses c1, which are for the :purpose of assisting the rod O to tip the bucket or bucket, as by these notches the tendency of the spouts of the buckets to glance or slip past the bar G as they are being tipped is overcome. The bucket is provided with a bail, c2, to which is attached the lifting-strap F, connected to one of the drums or shafts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent ist 1. The shea Bf, having the mailers b2 b3, in combination with the pawls D Dl and slide E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The shafts B B', having the pinions b b and ratchet-s b2 b3, in combination with the Arana: ori-Ion ,y
pawls D D', slide E, stationary crank-shaped bam C, and bucket Q c o1, Substantial] y as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination of the shafts or drums B B', Jche crank-bar C, and the bucketor buckets Gf, supplied with spouts o, and suspended Vfrom the said shafts 0r drums by means oi' straps, or in any other known Way, substantially as. herein shown and described, and vfor the purpose set fort-h. l
4. The bucket G, having' the spout c andthe notches c1 at the conjunction of the inner sui;-A faoe of lche latter and. former, substantially its andfor the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto si gned my naine this 19th day of November, 1873, in presence of t-Wo subscribing Witnesses.
NOAH H. LINDLEY.
