Be it known that 1, Joss CnsriLLo Fnnnzil, a citizen ofthe Republic of Mexico, residing at and whose post-ottico address is 285 St. Nicholas Avenue, inthe city oiE New York, county and` State ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful improve ments in Internal-Combustion Engines; and l do hereby declare the following tobe full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to rnake and use the same.
llhe invention relates to internal coinbustion engines of the type involving a rotary sleeve valve within the cylinder and within which the piston operates, andthe object or the invention is to provide a simplified and eiiicient structure including meansr for eilecting pressure-tight joints between the sleeve valve and the cooperating kparts of the engine structure to prevent leakage ot the explosive charge undergoing compres-l sion and also ot the exploded charge, there by avoiding the loss of power which such leakage would entail.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the block or cylinder casting, which may involve a single cylinder or multiple i cylinders. whichmis preferably provided with the usual water jacket for cooling'purposes, said casting being provided with a peripheral iiange 2 to which the top casting 3 is ,secured by" the usual bolts. As illustrated,ithe engine is rovided with four cylinders, each of which has an annular enlargement. 4 near the top thereof connected to the body of the cylinder by an inclined wall 1', which constitutes an abutment for a correspond ingly inclined shoulder on the cooperating sleeve valve, to be more particularly described hereinaiter. The upper end of the main casting above the cylinders is recessed to receive the lianges on the upper edges of the sleeve valves. c Fitting within each of the cylinders 1 is a rotary sleeve valve 1l which is provided with combined inlet and exhaust ports 16 located on opposite sides oi' the cylinder and with auxiliary exhaust ports 16', such as commonly employed in engines oir' this type. The interior 'of each ot the sleeve valves is accurately bored to receive the cooperating piston, not shown, and near the upper end oi" each sleeve valve there is provided an enlargement litting the annular enlargement ai of the corresponding cylinder. etween the annular enlargement of the valve and the main body portion thereoil is an inclined shoulder 12, which abuts the corresponding shoulder 1 on the interior of the cylinder wall, the abutting annular shoulders serving as a ground joint to prevent leakage or pressure between the sleeve valve and the eylinder wall. The extreme upper edge ott each sleeve valve is provided with a toothed flange 13 by means ot ,which the valve is ro tated in the cylinder and which also serves to impart rotary motion to the next valve. A packing ring 11i is applied to a peripheral groove just below the ilange `13 and `engages theinner wall ol the cylinder. Connected to the inner` .tace of the top casting, in alignment with each sleeve valve and accurately litting the latter, is a` disc E', which` disc is provided with a peripheral packing ring 5 engaging the inner wall of the sleeve valve. The discs 3 are secured to the top casting by suitable bolts Z and both the top casting 3 and the several discs 3 are provided with central aligning openings 8 and 8 adapted to receive the usual spark plugs.`
rlhe inner peripheral upper edge of each oi the sleeve valves 11 is provided with a bevel l5 adapted to receive ,a corresp0ndingly bevelled packing ring 17 located .in a recess 1.6 in the top casting 3, which packing ring is held firmly to its seat 15 by pins 18 mounted in hollow bosses 19 formed on the top casting 3 and acted upon by helical springs` 20, the tension of which is adjusted by means of cap nuts 21 in screw threaded adjustment with the said bosses 19, which packing ring 17 not only serves as a means for preventing leakage past the upper inner edge of the sleeve valve, but also serves as a means for forcing the inclined annular shoulder 12 on the sleeve valve into tight engagement with the corresponding inclined shoulder 1 on .the inner wall of the cylinder, and also admits of a ready adjustment of the sleeve valve in a longitudinal direction to compensate for wear between the shoulders 1 and 12.
In order to .prevent any leakage in a peripheral direction between the sleeve valve and the cylinder in which the same operates, the upper end of each cylinder wall is provided with a peripheral series of pockets 30, each pocket receiving a vertical packing bar 31, the inner face `of which bears against the outer wall of the valve, and the rear face of which is provided with a cam 32 adapted to be engaged by a cam nose 35 on the end of an adjustable bolt 34, the upper end of which passes through an opening in the top casting 3 yand is suspended by a helical spring 38 mounted in a hollowr boss 3G, which spring bears upon a cap 37 adjustably secured to the end of the rod 34, the construction and operation of the parts being such that the bars 32 are forced against the outer surface of the sleeve valve with a yielding pressure, which may be regulated by adjusting the tension of the springs 38 by means of the nuts 37 as will be understood. The upper end of each bar 31 is provided with an angular nose 33 adapted to engage a notch or recess 33 inl packing ring 14 in the outer face of the sleeve valve, thereby retaining the packing ring 14 stationary while the sleeve valve, to which it is applied, revolves.
The toothed iianges 13 on adjacent pairs of the sleeve valves 11 and are in engagement with each other, and between the intermediate valves 11 there is provided an idler gear 42 meshing with the toothed ianges on the adjacent valves, to complete` the'gear train for operating all of the valves at the same speed and in the same timed relation. rlhe several gears of the train are driven by means of a pinion 40 mounted upon a vertical shaft 41, which is driven from the crank shaft. The entire gear train is housed within the recess formed between the top casting 3 and the top of the cylinder casting, as illustrated in Figs. 7 and S. Preferably the shaft of the connecting idler gear 42 is extended through they top casting and is provided with a distributor or rotary switch controlling the ignition, conventionally illustrated at 44 in Fig. 8;
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the several sleeve valves are effectively guarded against leakage of pressure in a longitudinal direction, by reason of the joints formed by the 45C" bevelled shoulders 1 and 12 on the inner walls of the cylinders and the outer faces of the valves, which bevelled shoulders are maintained in accurate gas-tight engagement by means of the adjustable bevelled edge packing rings 17 engaging the upper bevelled edges of the several valves, and against leakage in a pe'.- ripheral direction by the vertical packing bars 31, which are held in firm but yielding Contact with the outer faces of the valves by the special means provided forthis purpose.
What I claim is:
1. An internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder having a peripheral enlargement toward its top terminating in a bevelled shoulder, a sleeve valve mounted for rotation therein having an outer peripheral enlargement engaging the enlargement in the cylinder and a bevelled shoulder coacting with the shoulder on the inner cylinder wall, a bevelled face on the upper rim of the valve, a bevelled ring mounted in the cylinder head engaging said bevelled face, and means for exerting pressure on said bevelled ring to force the bevelled shoulders on the valve and cylinder into engagement.
2. An internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder having a peripheral enlargement toward its top terminating in a bevelled shoulder, asleeve valve mounted for rotation therein having an outer peripheral enlargement engaging the enlargement in the cylinder and a bevelled shoulder coacting with the shoulder on the inner cylinder wall, a bevelled face on the upper rim of t-he valve, a bevelled ring mounted in the cylinder head engaging said bevelled face, pins in the cylinder head engaging said bevelled ring, and adjustable tension springs acting on said pins to force the bevelled shoulders on the valve and cylinder into engagement.
3. An internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder, a sleeve valve mounted for rotation therein, said cylinder and valve having coacting peripheral bevelled shoulders to form a gas-tight joint, means for forcing said shoulders into engagement, vertical packing bars mounted in longitudinal pockets in the inner wall of the cylinder engaging the adjacent face of 'the sleeve valve, and means for holding said bars in contact with the sleeve valve.
4. An internal combustion engine cornprising a cylinder, a sleeve valve mounted for rotation therein, said cylinder and `valve having coacting peripheral bevelled shoulders to form a gas-tight joint, means for forcing said shoulders into engagement, vertical packing bars mounted in longitudinal pockets in the inner wall of the 'cylinder engaging the adjacent face of the sleeve yalve, and adjustable yielding means for holding said bars in Contact with the sleeve Valve.
5. An internal combustion engine corni prising a cylinder, a sleeve Valve mounted for rot-ation therein, said cylinder and valve having coaoting peripheral bevelled shoulders to form a gas-tight joint, mea-ns for forcing said shoulders into engagement, Ver- 10 teal packing bars mounted in longitudinal pockets in the inner Wall of the cylinder engaging the adj aeeni'J face of the sleeve valve, rods depending from the cylinder head, coacting cams on the rods and bars to force the latter into engagement with the sleeve valve, and spring tension means for suspending said rods. g
