To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLEF ELLnFsoN, a. citizen of the United. States, residing at Appleton, in the county of Uutagamie and State of Wisconsin, have inrented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulp Breakers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for preparing fibrous material for the manufacture of paper, and more particularly to machines known in the art as pulp breakers.
One object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character wherein a pulp of fibrous material may be quickly and efficiently separated and otherwise prepared for the screening and other subsequent operations, without tearing or cutting the fibers thereof, or otherwise impairing the quality of the pulp.
Other ob'ects and advantages of the in- ,vention will. be apparent to those skilled in the art from a reading of the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein one form of the invention is illustrated.

1 Referring more in detail to the drawings, the machine is shown as comprising a casing 10, provided with twin cylinders 11 and 12, disposed side by side and in parallel relation, and divided centrally of the casing by a longitudinally extending partition 13. The casing is formed of two complementary one side of the machine at 10, so as to enable the upper section being removed or raised from the lower section at any time in order to clean the interior of the machine or make repairs. When in use, however, it is preferred to secure the two sections together by means of cap screws, or the like. which engage through flanges carried by the sections at theirabutting edges. The
lower section is provided with a plurality of and 12 respectively by a series of transverse partitions ll andlQ", the partitions and likewise the compartments of one section being staggered with relation to those of the other, as shown more clearly in Fig. l of the drawings.
A rotatable shaft 14 extends centrally through each of the cylinders longitudinally thereof. These shafts being journalled at opposite ends in suitable bearings 1 1 sup ported upon brackets 15 carried by the lower section of the casing. At one end of each of these shafts, a pulley 14 is mounted,
each designed to be connected by a belt or the like, with a suitable source of power. in practice it is proposed to have both of the pulleys in the same size and to drive the same from a single driving pulley, so that the two shafts 14: will be rotated at the same speed, the direction of rotation being also the same and as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1.
The intervening or dividing longitudinal partition 13 extending between the cylinders 11 and 12 is provided with a plurality of ports 16, and these ports are so arranged with respect to the compartments 11 and 12*, that the pulp in passing through the machine from the inlet 17' to the outlet 18 thereof must travel or flow alternately back and forth from one cylinder to the other unpropeller and breaker elements '19 and 20 respectively, the former being in the form of suitably constructed blades 19, mounted at an angle of approximately 45 with respect to the longitudinal axis of the shaft, and the latter being in the form of fiat blades 20. /Vith the exception of the inlet and outlet compartments 12 and 12 respectively of the cylinders 12, each of the compartments of each cylinder has mounted therein one propeller member 19 and tone breaker member 20, and each of said compartments, with the exceptions just noted, also is provided with two ports in the dividing longitudinal partition 13, which-in view of the staggered relation of the compartments previously describedact one as an inlet and the other as an outlet, as will be readily understood. The inlet and outlet compartments 12 and 12 in the particu lar embodiment of the invention illustrated are slightly smaller than the other comill partments of the machine, and are provided with only one port each, in the partition 13, and a breaker andpropeller element, respectively. y
In the operation of the machine, the pulp, of a consistency of from one-half to one and one-half per cent, or greater, is fed in through the inlet 17 under a slight head. In passing into the machine the pulp first flows into the inlet compartment 12 thereof, from which, through the head under which the material is fed into the machine and augmented by the action of the breaker element in said compartment, the said pulp or material is fed through the port l6 of the inlet compartment 12 and into the adjacentcompartment of the cylinder 11. In this compartment the pulp is acted upon both by a propeller and a breaker element, and then passes into the next compartment the cylinder l2, and so on alternately back and forth from one cylinder to the other through all of the remaining compartments in succession, and finally into the outlet compartnient 12 from whence the pulp flows out to be subjected to the screening and other subsequent operations preparatory to its use in the final manufacturing processes.
To better facilitate. an accurate under standing of the improvements, arrows have been placed in Fig. 1 to show the travel of' the pulp through the machine.
In practice, the present improvements the propeller and breaking elements are driven and also by the size of the port openings. It will also be obvious that the present improvements are not limited to the particular number of compartments or breaker and propeller elements illustrated in the particularform of the invention herein described,

In a machine of the class described, a plurality of cylinders arranged side by side, and provided with communicating ports therebetween, an inlet and an outlet, means for causing the pulp in its passage through said machine to flew back and forth from one of said cylinders to the other through said ports, and means for operating upon said pulp during such fiow to separate the fibers thereof.
3. In a machine of the class described, a plurality of cylinders composed of hinged complementary sections, alternate transverse partitions dividing each cylinder into a plura-lity of compartments, the compartn'ients of each cylinder communicating with those of the other through intervening ports, an inlet and an outlet, and means for causing the pulp in its passage through the said machine to flow alternately through the compartments of said cylinders. 4. In a machine of the class described, a plurality of cylinders composed. of hinged complementary sections, alternate transverse partitions dividing each cylinder into a plurality of compartments, the compartments of each cylinder communicating with those of the other through intervening ports, an inlet and an outlet, means for causing the pulp in its passage through the said machine to flow alternately through the compartments of said cylinders, and means acting to separate the fibers of said pulp during such passage.
5. In a machine of the class described, a casing provided with twin cylinders separated by a longitudinally disposed partition a series of ports therein, means in each cylinder for breaking up the pulp and separating the fibers thereof, an inlet and an outlet, and means for causing the pulp in its passage through said machine to flow alternately back and. forth through said ports from one of said cylinders to the other.
6. In a-machine of the class described, a casing provided with twin cylinders separated by a longitudinally disposed partition having a series of ports therein, a rotatable shaft in each cylinder having laterally projecting blades thereon, certaincf said blades acting to propel the pulp forwardly through said machine, and'othcrs of said blades acting as heaters to break upthe pulp and separate the fibers thereof, said pulppassing back and forth through said ports during such-action.
7. In a machine of the class described, a casing provided with-twin cylinders separated by a longitudinally disposed partition having a series of ports therein, a rotatable shaft in each cylinder having laterally projecting blades thereon, certain of said blades acting to propel the pulp forwardly through said machine, and others of said blades acting as heaters to break up the pulp and separate the fibers thereof, and means where by the pulp in its passage through the machine is forced to travel back and forth through said ports from one cylinder to the other.

In a machine of the class described, a casing provided with twin cylinders separated by a longitudinally disposed partition having a series of ports therein, a rotatable shaft in each cylinder having laterally pro jecting blades thereon, certain of said blades acting to propel the pulp forwardly through said machine, and others of said blades actseparate the fibers thereof, and means where-. by the pulp in its passage through the machine is forced totravel back and forth through said ports from one cylinder to the other, said means being in the form of transverse partitions mounted in each of said cylinders. a
