To aZZ whomit may concern: v Be it known that I, CHARLES 'A. .PSILAN- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Easton, in the county of. Northampton and'State. of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frog or Crossing Structures, of which the following is a specification. I. i I Principal objects of the invention are to provide a'central insert of maganese steel,
or other shock and wear=resisting metal,
which will not crown or bulge under stress oftraflic; toprovidea central insert which is so constructed as to have a certain amount of flexibility of which advantage may be taken, through the medium. of co-operative devices controllable at will,'to prevent or eliminate conditions which make for crowning;'to provide a. central insert which can be applied and removed with facility-and dispatchand without the necessity-of'disturbing the paving or roadway; and to provide simple and effective ing the insert.

The frog or track structure 5 is provided with a pocket 6 to accommodate a central insert 7. which. asis usual, is formed of manganese steel or other shock and wear res sting metal. The insert 7 has continuous side flanges 8 of reduced section in comparison with the main stock or body portion.

One side of the pocket 6 is formed by an offset extension 9 of the track structure and preferably cast integral therewith. This extension receives a side lock and wedging elements co-operating therewith and'admits of the insert being readily applied and removed without disturbing the paving. The
means for retainwall 10 of the pocket has a recess 11 to receive one of the flanges 8, the other flange co-operating with a similar recess 12 in a removable wall of the pocket. The removable wall may be a locking bar 13 ranging the length of the insert. Its recess 12 also enables the locking bar to engage or underlie the supporting ledge 14.. The locking bar may be secured, for example, by a system of wedges 15 with or without liners 16..
The insert is additionally secured through the vertical clamping action of bolt connections, the present embodiment having a pair of bolts 17 with complemental nuts 18. The
bolts occupy T-slots 19 in the pocket and open slots 20 of the insert flanges. The nuts 18 occupy depressions or countersunk provisions of the insert and are in clamping engagement with the latter. Since, as before stated, thecross-section ofthe insert is relatively reduced or weakened at and in the regions of the bolt connections, the latter may be-availed of at will to adjust the insert even to the extent of bending it in order to prevent or counteract any tendency towards-= crowning. vThe usual plastic'metal filling for the joints or crevices is indicated at 21.
The coextensive recesses 22 in the wedges and locking bar are useful when present to permit the introduction of a crowbar or the like to loosen the elements, after the filling has been melted, preliminary to removal of the insert. Subsequently, when the wedges and locking bar have been withdrawn, there is ample space in the offset extension of the pocket to permit the insert to be shifted laterally a sufficient distance to enable it to clear the recess 11, whereupon it is free to be lifted out of the pocket, assuming that the nuts 18 have been removed.
In the intersection, Figs. 3 and 4, the insert 23 is supported centrally, as at 24, on the bottom of the pocket, but also has relatively weakened marginal supports or flanges 25 controllable at will by bolt connections 26. In this instance there are three bolts, one adjacent the fixed recessed end of the pocket and two opposite the removable recessed wall element 27. The latter may be retained in any suitable way, the additional space afforded by the offset extension of the pocket admitting of wide departure in this respect. By way of example, however, a system of wedges 28 is illustrated.
