To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK B. DAVIDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marseilles, in the county of La Salle and 6 State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cartons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to foldable boxes or cartons, such as are made of paper- 1 board or other relatively rigid and light material and designed to contain bakery or other products.

The form of box or carton to which my invention has particular reference includes,

1 in certain. of its walls, flaps with interlocking ton es for holding the marginal walls of the ox in proper position with respect to the bottom wall and lid, when the box is set up and inuse.

The several objects of my invention will appear from the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box or carton embodying the features of my invention;

In the articular carton shown, the lid 5 is foldab y connected with the rear wall 3 along its upper edge. The front and rear walls 2, 3 each have end flaps 6, 7 foldably connected therewith, and these end flaps overlap the side walls 4, 4 on the outside thereof, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Said end flaps 6, 7 at each side of the box meet at a proximately the center thereof and have ocking tongues 8 and 9 ad acent their lower edges. These tongues 8, 9 extend through locking slots or notches 10, 11 in the flaps to lock the same together at said ton es. Each side flap 7 has a forwardly pro ectin portion or tongue 12 at its upper 5 edge, an said tongue 12 overlaps the other end flap 6 on the outside thereof above the tongue 8 on said end flap 6, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The tongue 12 extends across the vertical end edge 13 of the flap 6.

The tongue 8 on the end flap 6 extends upward from the lower ed of said flap beyond the vertical end e ge 13 of the same and the slot 10 forms in effect a downward continuation of said end edge 18 and opens upward to receive the downwardly opening slot 11 on the other end fla 7. The tongue 9 on the said flap 7 exten downward and is above the lower edge of said flap. Said tongue 9 is beyond the inclined end edge 14 of said end flap 7 and the slot 11 is an upiyardg ,continuation thereof, as shown 1n 11 looking the end flaps 6 and 7 together at each side of the carton, the ton ues 8 and 9 thereof are moved past each ot er to the rear of the respective end edges 13 and 14 of said flaps and the closed ends of the slots 10 and 11 are brought into contact with each other. This locks the end flaps 6, 7 ...together adjacent their lower edges and brings the tongues 8 and 9 back. of said flaps 6 and 7 and overlapping them to the rear, as shown. Said tongues 8, 9 are at such time between the flaps 6, 7 and the adjacent side walls 4, as shown in Fig. 5.

The upper tongue 12 .on the flap 7 is passed over the vertical end edge 13 of the other flap 6 above its tongue 8 and such edge 13 is brought into contact with the tongue 12 at the base thereof or into a relatively shallow transverse notch 15 at the base of said tongue 12 and opening toward said edge 13, as shown. By this construction, there is a form of lock at the upper edgfs of the end flaps 6 and 7 and above the 100 at the lower edges of said flaps.

The look at the lower edges of the flaps holds such portions of the flaps from endwise movement toward and from each other, while the look at the upper edges of said flaps prevents endwise movement of said flaps-toward each other in the upper ortions thereof. The latter is accomplis ed by the vertical end edge 13 of the flap 6 enaging the shoulder formed at the base of t e tongue 12. This double lock for the end flaps 6, 7 at both sides of the box holds the front and rear walls 2, 3 thereof upright and from displacement both inward and outward. Thus, contact of said walls 2, 3 with exterior objects does not displace or bend them inward to injure the contents packed or contained in the box or carton, and said walls 2, 3 are not displaced or bent outward by the wei ht of the articles a ainst them. Moreover, t e double lock holds the rear wall 3 frominward and outward flexing durin swinging of the lid 5 open and closed. anifestly, the corners of the box are maintained square and the marginal walls thereof upright, with the result that the box is made rigid throughout and stands up well in use.

The tongues 12 overlapping the end flaps 6 on the outside thereof holds the upper edges of said flap in the plane of the flaps and prevents said upper edges flaring or bul g outwardly to hinder or interfere wit the side flanges 16, 16 of the lid n passing down on the outside of the box in closing the lid 5. Moreover, the tongues 12 projecting forward, that is, toward the front wall 2, prevents said lid flanges 16 striking the u per corners of the end edges 13 of the end aps 6, on closing the lid, and also prevents said lid flaps 16 entering between the end flaps 6, 7 and the adjacent box walls 'the plane of the flaps and prevents any of such portions bulging or flaring outwardly.

'The resistance to pressures against said flaps from both sides is further enhanced by the sidewalls 4 inside of said flaps. Thus, the side walls of the box are held from inward as well as outward displacement with the result that said walls are held upright and the end flaps 6, 7 being connected with the front and rear walls 2, 3 serve to further hold said walls upright and the corners of the box square.

The lid 5, as shown in Fig. 1, has a front marginal flange 17 to engage over the outside of the front wall 2 when the lid is closed. The side and front flanges of the lid are integral with the body portion thereof and are constructed and locked together in the same manner as disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,372,218, granted March 22, 1921.

The box or carton, as herein described, is preferably made of fiber-board, or other like material, and is formed from a flat blank, as shown in Fig. 4. This blank is so cut and scored that when set up provides the box or carton described.

While I have shown and described herein, in detail, a box or carton embodying the teatures of my invention, it is to be of course understood that the details of construction and arrangement of parts shown may be variously changed and modified without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

I claim as my invention:

1. A carton having a bottom wall, and upright front, rear, and side walls foldably connected with said bottom wall, two opposite of said upright walls having end fla s overlapping the other of said u right wa'iis on the outside thereof, said' aps having their ends meeting and terminating short of the upright walls toward which they extend, said flaps having means at their meeting ends for interlockin the flaps together and holding all portions of the flaps along their meeting ends, including their upper and lower edges, in the plane of said flaps, said locking means being engaged and disengaged without bending said flaps by moving the flaps relatively to each other in the plane of the same.

2. A carton having a bottom wall, and upright front, rear, and side walls foldably connected with said bottom wall, two oppositeof said upright walls having end flaps overlapping t e other of said upright walls on the outside thereof, said flaps having their ends meeting and terminating short of the upright walls toward which they extend, said flaps having plural means at their meeting ends for releasably locking the flaps together adjacent the upper and lower edges thereof, said locking means being engaged and disengaged without bending said flaps by moving the flaps edgewise relatively to eacll; other toward and from said bottom wa 3. A carton having a bottom wall, and upright front, rear, and side walls foldably connected with said bottom wall, two opposite of said walls having end flaps overlapping the other of said upright, walls on the outside thereof, said flaps having their ends meeting and terminating short of the u right walls toward which they extend, said flaps having interlockin means at their meeting ends for releasab y locking the flaps together at their lower edges, and said flaps having overlapping portions at their meeting ends above said locking means for holding the upper portions of said flaps in the plane f the same, said locking means being engaged and disengaged without bending said flaps by moving the flaps edgewise relatlvely to each other in the plane of the same, the upper locking means following the lower into engagement on locking the flaps and the reverse on unlocking the same.

4. A carton having a bottom wall, and upright front, rear, and side walls foldably connected with said bottom wall, two 0 posite of said upright walls having end aps overlapping the other of said upright walls on the outside thereof, said flaps having interlocking means at their meeting ends for releasably locking the flaps together at their lower edges, and one of each of said flaps having a tongue projecting over the end edge of the other flap and overlapping the same beyond said edge above said locking means.

5. A carton having a bottom wall, and upright front, rear, and side walls foldably connected with said bottom Wall, two opposite of said upright walls having end flaps overlapping the other of said upright walls on the outside thereof, said flaps having interlocking locking tongues and slots at their meeting ends for releasably locking the flaps together at the lower edges thereof, and one of each of said flaps having an additional tongue projecting over the end edge of the other flap and overlapping the same beyond said edge above said locking means. 1

6. A carton having a bottom wall, upright front, rear, and two side walls foldably connected with said bottom wall, and a lid hinged to the rear wall along its upper edge, said front and rear walls having end flaps overlapping the side walls on the outside thereof, said fiaps having interlocking means at the their meeting ends for releasably locking the flaps together at their lower edges, one of each of said flaps having a tongue projecting over the end edge of the other flap and overlapping the same on the outside thereof above said locking means, said tongues extending toward the front wall, and said lid having depending front and side marginal flanges overlapping said flaps and front wall, respectively, when the lid is closed.'

7. In a carton, the combination of two flaps having upper and lower edges, said flaps having locking tongues and slots at their meeting ends for releasably locking the flaps together adjacent one of the edges of said flaps, one of said flaps having a substantially straight end edge to the rear of the tongue thereon and constituting a continuation of the locking slot therein, the other flap having an additional tongue projecting over the end edge of the first mentioned flap and overlapping the same with said end edge engaging the associated flap at the base of said last named tongue.

8. A carton having a bottom wall and up right front, rear, and two side wallsfoldably connected with said bottom wall, two opposite of said upright Walls having end flaps overlapping the other of said upright walls, said flaps having two sets of means adjacent the upper and lower edges, respectively, of said flaps for releasably locking the flaps together, one locking means consisting of tongues and slots for holding said flaps against endwise movement in both directions along one edge and the other locking means consisting of tongues only holding the flaps against endwise movement in one direction along the other edge.
