JOHN KARPIEJ, 0F HAM'IRAMCK, MICHIGAN.
CASTER.
Application filed May 15,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Joi-rN llARPlEJ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamtramck, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Casters, oi: which the following is a specification.
The main object of this invention is to provide a. smooth running caster provided with ball bearings and having means for ready access to the interior of the caster for repair of the same.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which like-named characters refer to like-named parts in the drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevational view of a leg of an article of furniture equipped with the caster.
Figure 2 is a plan view of another form of the caster.
Figure 3 is a central cross sectional view of said modified form in the elevational position.
Figure 4; is a similar view of the first lorin oi? the caster. I
l igure 5 is a. perspective view of one of the two members forming the ball support of the second form of caster.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 represents the leg of an article oif furniture. A taperedscrew 2 is adapted to be screwed into such a leg in a well known manner, said screw being provided on its lower extremity with a circular plate 3 rigid therewith. The center of said plate is recessed on the underside at a, and the outer periphery of said plate is threaded as shown.
The lower portion of this caster is formed of two similar parts 9 having plates 10 rigid at the top thereof. Said plates are grooved at 5, the outer walls of said groove icing threaded to be engaged by the plate a 3, and a boss 5 is provided within said ing the two lower parts 12. The threaded 1922. Serial No. 560,913.
groove to engage the recess 4. Recesses 8 are provided Within the parts 9 for receiv ing smallballs, and a large ball 11 is enclosed within the parts 9.
The assembling of the caster is readily. apparent. The parts9-1O are placed mu tually adjacent, in registration, and the re cessed plate 3 is screwed into the groove 5, thus binding the several parts into an integral and rigid whole. When so assembled, the ball 11 is secured against falling and rolls upon the small balls 7. p
The form shown in Figures 1 and 4 is substantially similar to that described, havgland 3 is in this form rigid with the stem 1", and, as is readily apparent, the same binds the lower parts into an integral whole as in the case of the other form described.
Although the foregoing is'descriptive of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is understood that minor changes may be made in its construction, without the exercise of invention or conflicting with the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors Patent, is i i 'A caster comprising a. pair of similar lower members having means forenclosing a. ball, substantially flat plates rigid with the upper extremities of aid members, 'semi circular threaded grooves inthe upper surfaces of'said plates, a bosson each plate partly enclosed by said groove, a member adapted to be secured to a leg of an article of furniture, said member being provided with a circular'plate having its outer periphery threaded and having a circular recess inthe center thereof, said circular plate '85 being adapted to engage said grooves, and
said recess being adapted to be engaged by said bosses. 1 In witness whereof I afiix my signature. JOHN KARPIEJ.
