PATENT OFFICE.
CLINTON SHIRLY KING, OF EDG-EWOOD, RHODE ISLAND.
ARMREST non BANJOS.
Application filed April 18, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLINTON SHmLY KING, a citizen of the United States, res1ding at Edgewood, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Armrests for Banjos, of which the followin is a specification.
@[y invention has reference to an improvement in arm rests for banjos and more particularly to an improvement in an arm rest for banjos that can be detachably secured in place on any banjo without the use of skilled labor.
In the usual construction of arm rests or guards for banjos the arm rest or guard is fixed to and sold with the banjo. If an owner of a banjo desires such a guard on his banjo, it is necessary to send the banjo to the factory to have the arm rest or guard applied, unless he happens to be a skilled mechanic. on musical instruments, as 1t 18 necessary to drill holes through the rim of.
the banjo, to bolt the arm rest or guard to the rim of the banjo.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of an arm rest for banjos, whereby the arm rest may be sold as a separate article and easily secured to a banjo without the use of special tools.
A further object of my invention is to construct such an arm rest for banjos so that the arm rest maybe easily attached or detached from the banjo, without injury to the banjo.
My invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of an arm rest for banjos, said arm rest having details of construction, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter and claimed.
Figure 1 is a face view of a portion of a banjo provided with my improved attachable and detachable arm rest.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical view looking at the back of the arm rest.
Figure 3 is an enlarged plan view look ing at the underside of the arm rest, and
Figure 4 is a still further enlarged detail transverse sectional view through the arm rest and part of the banjo, taken on line 4, 4 of Figure 1.
Serial No. 554,985.
from a skin which is stretched over the rim 7, and then onto a wire ring 9. Over the head 8 and ring 9 is the usual top hoop l0 held in place by the usual brackets, not shown.
My improved attachable and detachable arm rest- 6 for banjos consists of a curved edge flat plate 11 which extends over the head of the banjo and has a lip 12 curved to conform to the usual banjo rim 7. Secured to the lip 12 are two fastening members 13, each fastening member 13 consisting of a bolt 1 1 having a. sliding fit in a bearing 15 on the lip 12. i The bolt 14 has a hook shaped end 16 which hooks over the head hoop l0 and a screw-threaded end 17. On the bolt 1% is a nut 18 and a tubular slide 19 having a side projection 20 which goes under the ring 9, as shown in Figure 4.
By this construction the arm rest is detachably secured to the ring 9 and hoop l0 and the plate 11-is spaced from and parallel with the banjo head 8, also the boring of holes through the rim, for arm rest fastening members, as shown in United States Patent No. 360,935, granted April 12, 1887, is eliminated.
lVhcn in use the plate 11 forms the rest for the arm and holds the arm out of contact with the head 8 and the arm rest is easily attached or detached from the banjo, by tightening or loosening the nut 18.
I do not wish to confine myself to the construction of my improved arm rest as the same could be varied within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention 1 claim as new 1. An arm rest for banjos consisting of a flat curved edge plate adapted to extend over the head of a banjo and having a curved lip, fastening members on the curved lip, said fastening members having means for detachably securing the arm rest to the head ring and hoop of a banjo, for the purpose as described.
2. An arm rest for banjos consisting of a projection adapted to go under the head ring of a banjo and a nut on the bolt engaging With the tubular slide, for the purpose as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
CLINTON SHIRLY KING.
