FREDERICK P. WOOD, OF OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COM- PANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CAN.
Application filed January 5, 1920 Serial No. 349,483.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK P. VVoon, a citizen of the United States, residing in Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to cans or containers and has more particular reference to cans or containers of paper or fibrous material particularly adapted to hold oil and grease. 1
A principal object of the invention is the provision of a can 01' container which will permit hot oils or greases to be received without being absorbed by the package or leaking through it.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a can or container coated with a film resistant to hot oils and greases, which film will be reinforced by materials upon which the film is deposited.
Another highly important object of the invention is the provision of a can or container rendered grease proof by a grease resistant film deposited upon the body sheet which by reason of its construction facilitates thepositioning of the film coating. In this regard the invention contemplates the use of a substantially non-absorbent sheet to receive the film, so that all of the film material remains on the surface of said sheet and forms a continuous unbroken coating.
The invention further contemplates the use of a sheet non-absorbent to greases as well as to the film material, and this prevents any slight imperfection that may be present in the film reducing the effectiveness of the package.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a grease proof can or container that may be readily made in spirally Wound form and on a spiral winder.
Another important object of the present invention is the provision of a grease proof can or container requiring a relatively small mount of grease proofing film forming material. I
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be ap arent as it is better understood from the following description which taken in connection withthe accompanying drawings discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
On the drawings,
Figure 1 is a partial perspective view of a can embodying my present invention; and
Fig. 2'is a partial and enlarged section of thesame.
The can shown on the drawing for the purpose of illustrating my present invention, comprises a spirally wound container, the inner ply 11 being of material nonabsorbent to greases and also to the grease proof material used, as will be presently described. This inner ply 11 is preferably of parchment papers Itis cemented to the outer ply .12, which may be of any preferred material, by a layer 13 of glue having an animal gelatine basis, as hide glue, and a film 14 of grease proof material is coated on the inner side of the body wall of the sheet 11'. This material has also an animal gelatine base, as hide glue. A good mixture is one part high grade hide glue or gelatine, four parts water and one-half of one per cent glucose;
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangements of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages,
the form hereinbefore described belng merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
A grease-proof container having an outer ply of suitable fibrous material, an inner ply of parchment paper, hide glue uniting said outer and inner plies, and a greasesproof coating on the inner side of said inner ply.
FREDERICK P. WOOD.
