Description

E. KRAFT.
,Bungs far Beer-Barrels.
Patented Dec. 23,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDY'VARD KRAFT, OF TYRONE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUNGS FOR BEER-BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,878, dated December 23, 1873; application filed October 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KRAFT, of Tyrone, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Ventilatin g Bungs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
. 2 isa longitudinal section of the same. Fig.
3 is a view of the valve alone.
0 represents an ordinary wooden bung having an opening b, extending all the way through it, a circular recess, 0, cut in its top, and a rounding valve-seat, (I, formed at the junction of the recess and opening I). Extending through this hung is the rod or stem 0, which is long enough to project some little distance downward into the barrel below the bottom of the bung, and which has the valve 9 formed upon its top. Placed upon the lower end of this stem is a leather disk, 1 which can be adjusted up and down, and made to regu late the distance which the valve shall move, so as to prevent it from being blown out of the bung by the pressure of gas in the barrel.
This is intended especially for barrels in which lager or other fermenting liquids is stored away, so that when the pressure of gas becomes too strong in the barrels it will raise the valve upward out of its seat and escape up through the opening b around the sides of the stem. As soon as the pressure decreases the valve sinks back into its seat from its own weight, and thus prevents any foul airs in the cellar from coming in contact with the beer.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim The hung a, having the recess 0, seat 01, and opening I), in combination with the stem 0, valve 9, and disk a", substantially as shown and described.
