. 'POWER-TRANSMISSION DEVICE.
Application led Gctober 23, 1919. Serial No. 332,650.
To all whom tim-ay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLiAM H. DOUGLAS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, in the co-unty of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefuljlmprovements 1n Power- 1`ralnsmission Devices, of which thefollowy sure the invention will be described'in connection with-a double acting drum constituting part of a'window actuating mechanism,
to illustrate the utilization of thek device disclosed as a locking mechanism to defeat any attempt to'move the driven member by application vof power to any part thereof except through the driving member.
- One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple form' of device of the type outlined and in which the minimizing ofthe number of necessary parts has been featured. Another object ofthe invention is to provide` in such a device yan arrangement of parts so proportioned and arrangedthat relatively, heavy forces are transmitted through relatively, light structural parts.
Incidental to the last generall obj'ect,"the invention has for a further desideratum, the providing of parts which can be readily de- 40 mounted for repair and substitution for worn parts; in which a. relatively'light inaniial effort may be utilized'to overcome la high degree of resistance lto movement, such asis presented in the' shifting yof tight vfitting windows. l
Various other objects and advantages of the invention willbe part obvious from an inspection of 'the accompanying drawings and in part will be more'fully set forth in 59 the following 4particular description of one the arrows; and .1 .v f
claims, parts will .be identified by specic f orm of mechanism vembodying, my! invent1on,and. the invention also consists 1n certain new and novel features of construction' and combinatioiiof forth and claimed. a
. In the accompanying .drawingszw o Figure 1f is a sectional view showing a preferred embodiment of my invention, g shown in connection with a partof ar win-l dow actuating deviceand taken on Vthe'line parts lhereinafter set 1 1 of Figure .2, looking in the direction yillidicated by the; arrows;

,inthe foiiowing description@einem f naines for convenience of expression but they.l are intended to be as generic in their application yto similarparts-as the art vwill permit,...A
In the drawing'there is shown a fixed support 10, such as a-` wall `or the kvehicle door,'provided with an opening in which isk placed a ring bearing 11. A Y-sh'aped driven member 12 (see Figure 4) is provided ,on its rear side with al hub 13 rotatably mountedin the bearing 11, and providedon its front side with an lextension' 14 iii-the form of a split -sleeve'l in. whichis rock-yv ably mountedthe hub 1,5l ofl a driving'mem ber 16. vThe front face of the'driven' member 12 is provided with a radially extending, -i
fish-tail groove 17 opposite sides of which 90.2 circumferentiallyconsidered are definedjby Vradially extending and relatively extensivev i pawl-receiving faces 18.l
The driving'memberincludes avej'radially extending power applying arm19I-whichvis' 95 positioned inthe groove 17' and is fre'elto move circumferentially' for' a limited-distance in a direction in said recess before contacting ywith the faces 18. Thevr arm :1Q-fis K somewhat massive and.4 is provided'on oppo- 100 so y ` osite sides of the rrroove l ls e site sides with broad bearing faces 2O which contact with one or the other laces 1S depending upon the direction ot' rotation of the driving membe-r to provide therewith broad power transmitting laces extending radially and designed to transmit powerful forces without breaking the power transmitting parts.
The driving and driven members are coaxially disposed and are inclosed within a drum 2l which is ahXed to the support l0 by screws 22. The drum includes a peripheral brake surface 23 and a tace plate 24twhich has its central portion outset to form a hub 25 constitutingv an outer support tor the'b'earing l1. The outer edge or the driven member lacing the interior surface of the drum 2l is cut back to provide a` pair ot roller-receiving-recesses 26 positioned on op- Y T rlhese recesses 26 each have such an angle to the radius eX- tend'ing centrally through the groove 17 that the'inner portion 27 o the recess, measured radially, yis of slightly less length than the similarly measured distance at the outer portionl 28 or" ythe recess. A wedge member in the form ot1 a roller 29 is positioned in each ofthe 'recesses and is so proportioned that when the rollerV is in the space 27 there is provided a one-way clutch connection between the driven member and the drum but when the roller is moved towards the relatively wide space 28 the clutching engage- A ment is interrupted and the driven member is lireeV` to rotate in the direction in which the roller is moved as hereinafter more fully described. Each roller is normally held pressed towards the narrow portion of its recess and in clutching position by means ot al leaf spring 30. The springs 30 are' tastened to opposite sides of the stem 3l of the.
Y-shaped driven member and extend along opposite sides of the driven member. The outer ends of each ot the springs is inturned to `form a finger 32 and each passed between guiding lugs 33 extending outwardly from oppositevsides of the driven member. l'lhese lugs also constitute stops for limiting the movement of the roller into its inoperative or unclutching position. lThe tree end of eachv spring normally bears against its coa'ct'ing roller to force the same towards the inner or narrow portion of the containing recess.r The two springs coact to hold both rollers in their operative clutching engagement and thus act to hold the driven member st rotation in either rotary direction.
ihc arm 19 is ot substantial T-shaped form, theV lie-ad 34e of which constitutes a pair of peripherally extending kicking projections 35. rlhese projections are designed to move into enga-gement with one or the otherl ot thev rollers depending upon the diifetiOn-oi` rotation of the driving member to remove the'enga-ged roller from its wedging inerte/i into an inoperative position in the wide part ot the recess. The projections are so proportioned relative to the clearance between the sides of the arm 19 and the adjacent walls means for transmitting power throughtwo' members, identified for convenience or" description as a driving and driven membern and in which the driven member maybe any? mechanisml which normally is to be locked against the action of turning forces which may originate in the driven member.`
For the purpose' of showing a practical use to which this mechanical movementmay be utilized, and for the purpose of illustrate ing the possibility of using this mechanical movement in a. situation where a relatively weak muscular movement is to be utilizedv to move a driven member which is' intended to resist powerful leverage forces originating in the same. the disclosure is illustrated in connection with a part'of a window actuating device.
rl`he driven parts include a twoV channelled drum 40 mounted on the'su'pport' l0 prefernu ably through some suitable form' of anti-trici tion device all. The grooves 42 in tlie-pe= riphery of the drum are designed to accommodate window actuating'wircs ilfand'll.; and in their active operationwouldacton the drum and tend to rotate the same should an eilort be made to raise or' lower th'ewin` dow ele-ment attached to the cables. It will be appreciated that any such effort would exert a powerful leverage through the'la-rge drums and react on the locking device* to wreck the same. However, the parts are of rugged construction and can withstand the wedging actionot' thev rollers. i
.For the purpose oi *disclosing the use? of the device with manual lpower thereV is shown in outline a: crank l5 engaging the squared end 46 of the driving member. The driven member is provided' with relatively small but powerful pinion 47 keyed thereto and which meshes with a gear 48 on the drum to `form an internal gear drive between the driven member and the drum.
Having thusV described my invention", I claim:
ln a device of the class described, a driven member and alixed member, means normally locking the driven memberV against rotation in one direction seid means com` prising wedglng surfaces between the two members, and an element movable to and from said wedging surfaces, two spaced pro- Signed at New York city, iin the county 5 jections on the driven member'and a, Hat of New York and State of New York,` this spring having one arm secured to the driven 18th day of.
