To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN R. EVANS, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and tate of Michigan, have invented cer` tain new and usei-ul Improvements in Tool Holders, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to tool holders, and more particularly to ro-tary tool holders of the type having a socket for engagement by a tool shank, and having one or more locking members mounted in the wall of said socket, 'and adapted to be normally maintained in locking engagement with the tool by a sleeve embracing the tool holder and longitudinally adjustable to provide for retraction of the locking member or members.
It is the object of the invention to provide an impro-ved control sleeve for a holder of this type, and an improved means for limiting` the movement of said sleeve.

Figure 1 is a view of the improved tool, partly in side elevation and partly in section Figure 2 is a fragmentary end view ofthe control sleeve.
In these views, A designates the tool holder, and B a socket opening in the end of `the holder for engagement by the shank of a tool. The wall of the socket B is formed with a pair of diametrically opposed openings B in which are respectively disposed locking members C, preferablyhaving the form of balls. Said balls are adapted to project into the socket B, and `are retained against escape from the openings B into said socket by an annular flange C formed at'the end of each opening B adjoining said socket. The member A is embraced fby a sleeve D which is slidable upon said member, to control projection of the balls C to their locking positions shown in full lines in the drawing, or retraction of said balls to the dash line position which they are permitted to assume in a corresponding raised position of the sleeve D, also indicated in `dash lines in the drawing. The lower portion of the sleeve D is interiorly formed with an annular channel E, which when the sleeve is raised registers with the opening B', and is adapted to partially receive the balls C.' The upper portion of the linterior face 'of said sleeve conforms snugly to the holder A, so las to maintain the balls projected when the sleeve is lowered, as shown in full lines in the drawing. Both rthe upward and downward movement of the sleeve D is limited by a split wire ring F, which engages in `an annular channel Gr formed in the holder A below the openings B". The lower half of said channel G'conforms in cross section to the curvature of the wire F, while the lupper half H is gradually inclined to the exterior surface of the holder A. Saidring being disposed within the. channel E forms an abutment which is engageable by the top and bottom shoulders of said channelE to l limit sliding of the sleeve D. When, however, said sleeve is thrust sharply upward, the resulting yimpact upon'the split ring F expands the same and permits the same to ride up the inclinel H and ythus disengage l from the channel. Continued upward movement of the sleeve D will then remove both said sleeve and said'ring F from the holder A. In assembling` the described parts the balls C are first thrust into the openingsfB, V
and the sleeveD isslid upon said holder subsequent to insertion of the split ring F within said sleeve. When movement of the sleeve has carried said ring into registration with the groove G, the ring will snap into the groove and will thus be adapted to function as a retainer and stop member for thesleeve.
It is preferred'to positively lock the sleeve in its normal position, shown in full lines in the drawing, by radially mounting in the holder A `a screw o-r pin I having a lreduced end I projecting outwardly from said holder and normally engaging in the channel E in proximity to the rib J, which closes vthe lower'end of said channel, soas to' plrevent such shifting of the sleeve 'D as will permit the balls to retract. In order to adjust said sleeve to its dash line position, it is necessary rst to rotate said sleeve to register a notch K in the rib J with the proj ection I, and after returning the sleeve to its normal position (projecting the balls C), the notch K is thrown out of registration with said projection through ya slight rotative adjustmen. This locking feature is of particular importance When the tool is used in some position in Which gravity is not effective to hold the control sleeve in its ball projecting position.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A tool holder having a socket opening in an end thereof and Iformed with an opening through the Wall of said socket, a locking member engaging in said opening, a sleeve embracing said holder, having a portion of its interior face substantially conforming to the exterior face of the holder, and registrable with said opening in one limiting position of said sleeve. to project said locking member into said socket, and having another portion of its interior face formed with an annular channel registrable With said opening in the other limiting position of said sleeve to permit retraction of said locking member, and a split ring Within said channel of the sleeve, limiting sliding movement thereof, said ring engaging in an annular groove of the holder, having one side gradually inclined to the exterior face of the holder to permit forcing of said ring out of said holder upon subject-ion of said ring to a sudden impact by the sleeve.
2. A tool holder comprising a socket member, having an opening through the wall of said socket, a locking member engaging in said opening, a sleeve slidable on said socket member controlling projection of said locking member into said socket or retraction of the same, said sleeve having an annular channel, and a split ring engaging in an annular groove of the socket member and in the annular channel of said sleeve to limit sliding of said sleeve in either direction, said groove being gradually inclined at one side of its center line to the exterior face of the socket member to permit forcing of said ring from said groove through an Vabnormal pressure exerted laterally upon the ring by the sleeeve.

A tool helder comprising a socket member having an opening through the Wall of the socket thereof, a locking member retained in said opening, a sleeve slidable on said socket member engageable in one limiting position thereof with said locking member to project the same into said socket and having an annular channel formed therein permitting retraction of said locking member in another limiting position, means carried bythe socket member limiting sliding of said sleeve, and a 'releasable projection carried by the socket member normally extending into "the -annular channel in said sleeve and maintaining the sleeve in its limiting position projecting said locking member.

A tool holder comprising a socket member having an opening through the Wall of the socket thereof, a locking member engaging in said opening, a sleeve slidable on said socket member engaging said locking member to project the same into one limiting position of said sleeve and having an annular channel formed therein permitting retraction of the locking member in another limiting position, means carried by the socket member limiting sliding of said sleeve, said sleeve being freely rotatable upon said socket member, and means normally extending into the annular channel in said sleeve and restraining the sleeve in its position holding the locking member projected, said means being Withdrawn from the annular channel in said sleeve through rotation of the sleeve.
5. A tool holder comprising a socket member having an opening through the Wall of the socket thereof, a locking member retained in said opening, a sleeve slidable on said socket member engaging said locking member to project the same in one limiting position of said sleeve and formed with an interior annular channel registering With said locking member in the other limiting position of said sleeve to permit retraction of the locking member, and a projection upon the socket member entering said channel of the sleeve When said channel is out of registration with the locking member and restraining the sleeve against sliding adjustment, the sleeve being freely rotatable upon the socket member andadapted to register a notch in one end thereof with said projection to permit disengagement of the projection from said channel.

A tool holder comprising a socket member having an opening through the Wall of the socket thereof, a locking member engaging the opening' in said member, a sleeve slidably mounted on said socket member and adapted to force said locking member into the socket of said socket member, said sleeve having an annular channel formed therein, means carried by the socket member and disposed Within the channel in said sleeve to limit the said sleeve in its sliding movement, said sleeve being freely rotatable upon said socket member and having a notch at one end communicating with said channel, and means carried by said socket member adapted to pass through the notch in said sleeve to lock the said sleeve in one position of adjustment.
7. A tool holder comprising a socket member having an opening through the Wall of the socket thereof, a locking member engaging the opening in said member, a sleeve slidably mounted on said socket member and adapted to force said locking member into v the socket of said socket member, said sleeve havin an annular channel formed therein, a sp it ring carried by said socket member and disposed Within the channel in said sleeve to limit the Said sleeve in its slidingmovement in either direction, said sleeve being freely rotatable upon said socket member and having a, notch at one end communicating with said channel, and a pro- `ection carried by said socket member adapted to pass through the notch in said sleeve to look the said sleeve in one' position of adjustment.
