. citizen of the United Eitetes, residing; at
Chicago, in the county of Cool: and @tste of lllinois, have invented new and useful. Inn provenients in Ehgns, of WlllCll the following 1s :1 specification.
My invention relates to signs and more particularly to e sign the display surf-see oi" which may be readily removed from its support for replacement or Mention of the inscriptions thereon.
i. he invention has ior its primary ob ect to provide in :1 sign of this kind a. novel and improved means whereby the display surface is held in position upon its support against displacement "Without the cn'iploynient of IlllllS, screws or other conventional fasteners.
it. furth r object of the invention is the provision e sign of the hind stated which is simple consruction, inexpensive to iinimufecture, itllCl which is capable of convenient and general npplicntion to all man nor of objects to which signs are attached, such as trees, fences, street cars, vehicles and the like.
With the above end other objects in view its will become more apparent the description proceeds, the invention comprises novel combination end arrangement of pnrts to he hereinafter described end claimed, end in order that th seine may he better under stood, reference is had to the accompanying): drawings forming; a, part of this specifics tion.
In the drawings,
l ignre l is it perspective porting frame to which the of the sign is applied;
ilig. 2 is a, similar view of the display surview of e sup display surface lli I3 is :1 brolten view in transverse section illustrsting the display surfs-ice in place upon its support;
Fig. d is c section on the line i i of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is an elevation showing the application of the sign to the side of e motor delivery vehicle;
Fig. 6 is at slightly modified form of the invention wherein the sign is depicted upon the curved front of s street car and,
Fig. 7 illustrates the manner of use of ii plurality of signs upon an elevated rziilivsv Waiting platform.
P A T hi it ill t Elcriel lilo.
Referring speciliiczilly to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designute like parts throughout the several views, numeral 10 denotes the upper end lower parallel rails of the supportii frame, they being? connected by means of o. cross piece 11 of thinner nnitcrizil which is fitted into opposed recesses in the heel; of the reils so that .its outer face lies in the sums plane therewith so as to present a smooth surface for more ready ep iilicstion of the frame to the object upon winch it is to be lOuzt'llcd. liicch of the rails 10 has :1 groove 12 extending; throughoutits outer longitudinal surface and the front-cl edges said rails edjecent said groovs are slightly rounded (es shown st 10 in Fig. 3)., the purpose of: which will be presently described.
inc removable display suriuce of the sign comprises o. nietiil sheet .13 cut in substantially the same dimensions as the frame, the longitudinal edges of Wll'lCll terminate in opposed backward on is t which are adopted to he sprung over the rounded frontal edges of the rolls into the grooves 19 to firmly locate the display surface upon the frame. Between the curls ll end the plane surface of the sheet 13 is the inclined portion which to drew the plane surface more firmly to 1e rails end at the same time hold the curls s-sted ii the grooves 12.
Frown the foregoing decription read in connection with the iiccoinpenying drewlDQfS, the c instruction and utility of my improved sign Will he readily understood. The display surfuce they be coated with slatelilie substance if desired and the idvertising;- motter placed thereon with chell: or chalk "paint, or the posted paper si may be placed thereon it gn'eferred. l: the sign is to be displayed from it post or tree, will be secured thereto hy moons of neils driven through the cross nieitnber ii. When once positioned with curls lid in the grooves 12 of the rails it will he effectually so insintoined iinninst dis lsceinent by the Wind, since a Wind lJlOF-Jinglg from the heclt of the sign will only not to bulge the center of the display surf outward ceuse the curls to more 1...i.'1nl v grip the grooves While at Wind blowing tow d the front of the sign will press it against its frame.
The sign being in position, it may he reedilv re ..ioved and taken down by merely disengaging the lower curl it from its lllll groove whereupon the upper curl 14 may be raised and the sign lowered to the ground. Any change in the lettering thereon may then be conveniently made and the sign replaced obviating the necessity of doiu the work from a ladder or in an unsteady or cramped position.
I have found it desirable in order to stiffen the metal display surface 13 to bend its end edges back shown at 16 in Fig. 4. This also gives the ends a smooth edge and lends greater strength and stiffness to the curls 14.
In Figures 5, (5 and 7 various applieations of the sign are illustrated. Fig. shows the sign applied to the side of: a commercial vehicle 17, while in Fig. 6 it is depicted upon the curved front of a street car. The frame in this case, also the display surface 13 is curved to conform to the curve of the car front. The walls ot station platforms are much used for advertising signs, it being highly desirable to use a readily removably and replaceable sign in connection therewith. Fig. 7 shows a portion of an elevated railway waiting plat form 20 upon the walls 19 of which a plurality of signs embodying my invention are disposed.
\Vhile I have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the same within the spirit of the invention. the scope of which is set forth in the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a sign, the combination with a support, of a display su .ce comprising a sheet of metal, and integral resilient clamping means associated with opposite edges of 'l display surface for removably locating it upon the support.
2. A sign of the character described comprising a pair of spaced parallel rails each of said rails having a longitudinal g ove in its outer face, a display surface, and clamping means carried by opposite edges of said display surface engageable with grooves for removably locating said display surface thereupon.
3. A sign. of? the character described comwardly directed curls carried by opposed edges of said dis-play surface for engagement in mid support. and curls being located yond the plane portion of said display surface and rearwardly thereof. and the stock of said curls between said plane iinci'i jiiion bearing portion and said curls presenting a substantially planisur- ."t sign of the character described comin a pair of spaced parallel rails, each mid rails haviu; a longitudinal groove in its outer face extending throughout its length. a sheet metal display surface removably carried against said rails, and intogral rearwardly directed curls carried by opposite edges of said display surface engageable with said grooves for locating said display surface against said rails.
(3. A sign of the character described co|uprising a pair of spaced parallel rails. each o f said rails having a longitudinal groove in its outer face extending throughout its iength. a sheet metal display surface having a plane inscription bearing portion. integi-al rearwardly directed curls carried by opposed edges of said display surface for engagement with said grooves, said curls being located beyond the plane portion of said display surface and rearwardly thereof, and the metal stock bet-ween said plane portion and said curls also presenting a substantially plane surface.
'7. In a sign, a combination with a support of a display surface, an integral resilient clamping means associated with opposite edg'es of said display surface and ex tending throughout the length thereof for removably locating it upon the support.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRED H. LOVELESS.
